Sad story about the death of a local 4-year-old in today's paper....

The story starts
"The death of 4-year-old Joseph Kim began as a mystery and, in many ways, it will remain one"

then goes on to say
"His family and authorities know that Joseph died from brain injuries. They know he fell down stairs in an Eagan home after being nudged by his 12-year-old baby sitter. And they know that he wasn't taken to a hospital for more than three hours after he had an apparent seizure that September night.

But exactly what or who caused Joseph's death may never be known.

....although the baby sitter was alone with Joseph most of the time,

....The sitter, who was living with xxx and xxx but has returned to his native xxxxxxxxx , told authorities of several incidents the next day:

...He was hitting golf balls in the garage playroom about 2:15 p.m. when one ricocheted and hit Joseph

...said that about 3 p.m. he gently pushed Joseph toward stairs so they could go to the lower level. The child stumbled, fell down six carpeted steps and hit his head on the carpeted landing

...The sitter admitted to four other incidents that day, all of which the medical examiner ruled out as causes of Joseph's death:

• While swinging a golf club, he accidentally hit Joseph in the back. A slight bruise was found there.

• He hit Joseph on the head with a frozen Popsicle.

• He grabbed Joseph by the shoulders and shook him briefly and mildly to get his attention.

• While using a home computer, he briefly grabbed Joseph on the front of the neck and pushed him away because he was interfering. No marks were found on the child's neck. "

Based on the story, I would venture to say that the reporter has a pretty good idea what the cause may have been.... where is the big mystery?

The whole story is here http://www.startribune.com/stories/462/3757290.html

12 has always been to young to babysit. My 12 yo is just now starting to stay home while I run to the store. She is far from being able to take care of another life.

Depends on the 12 year old ya'll....but this one definately wasn't capable. How very sad...

Geezzeee. . . doesn't sound like much of a mystery to me either ByThesea. . . :(

I think a brother or sister who's 12 might be okay as a sitter for a very short amount of time; but to "hire" a 12-year-old ???

Just sad all the way around. . :(

I was very responsible when I was 12 but it sounds as though this babysitter is not :(

Bless that child's heart, so very sad.

Shoot, I earned a good percentage of my college tuition babysitting, starting at about 12. I do think it depends on the child.

This is so sad, though. :(

i took the red cross babysitting course when i was 12 and that's when i started babysitting.

i agree, it depends on the child.

such a sad story. :(

I started babysitting with my older brother when I was in 5th grade. I was mature for my age and knew a lot about taking care of children from helping out in the church nursery. My brother would get the job and get paid for babysitting. I would do the work while he mainly watched tv and he gave me $1 or something. It was a great way for me to get some extra practice with a safety net. The pay wasn't that great, but I was thankful. I ended up with all of his jobs a few years later. It was a good way to break into the business.

My daughter is almost 12. She has done a little babysitting, but in our home. I agree that 12 is a little young in most cases.

Maybe I should have a different title, I made the post and had to think of a subject. 12 seems young to me, but then I did babysit at 13...

I think what I found... odd... about the story is that it's apparently a mystery how the child died... yet they list all the things the babysitter admitted to doing to the child...

I just found it disturbing, but I suppose now that the babysitter has left the country, and was only 12 years old there isn't a whole lot they could do anyway.....
