May immigrate from US to NS.

Have you ever thought of a Bed & Breakfast????

Perhaps you could also incorporate an "Eco-Tourism" theme into your home and farm business and do on farm tours, craft demo's maybe even family centered vacations for those that don't have the opportunity to experience country living.

Eco-Tourism is pretty hot right now and many people are looking to do and learn while on vacation not just sit back ans relax.

Whatever you decide to do I hope it works out well for you. Don't forget to visit CB's island neighbour...PEI.

Good Luck

Good idea. I would LOVE this. My husband isn't very "people oriented" and I know the bed and breakfast would not suit him. I would love to do a yurt camp with nice antique filled bedrooms in them, I saw this featured in a magazine and it was really cool - they had the heavy canvas Africa style tents but, I think yurts would suit NS better, with the wet weather.

You could be onto something though we, really will need to grow into that. We just want to get our home built - my husband is determined to to much of this himself. I think we will go with a passive solar design using straw bale construction and dyed concrete floors stamped into tile shapes - may sound ugly if you are not familiar with these types of constuction, will basically look like a stucco and stone house with lots of stone and tile floors - we are fans of the 20's and 30's antiques and I think the home will lend itslef to the "Craftman" style home that was popular in California during that time peroid into the present. After we get past this hurdle or at least towards the end we can direct our energies to building a business of some kind. Having the option of waiting is probably a blessing as we can determine what business niche we can best fill in the area we choose. Things that appeal to me are heritage cattle or heritage sheep and deffinitely we will have a greenhouse business as we plan on plan on purchasing a large greenhouse - 1000 sq. feet for Aquaponics - my husband has a hobby in this field which is likely to become a business. I imagine fresh, local veggies fetch a premium price during the winter months in NS!

I have not looked into PEI though, real estate prices seem to indicate that it is desirable. I'm sure once we are in the neighborhood we will hop the ferry over at some point!

Is "Tim's" comperable Starbucks in the USA? I've never been a big fan of Starbucks because, I'm more into the free trade, organic shade grown type of coffee - so delicious. My husband would be the tea drinker, though I love a cup of jasmine infused white tea now and then. I noticed recently that Starbucks has jumped on the bandwagon and now offers an Organic coffee. I just can't buy it from them knowing they are just riding consumer trends, for some reason it irritates me! :) pirate:

OK I just have to say...please consider heated floors!!!

If you are going with concrete floors they will be pretty cold in the winter! I'm no expert in this area(unless you consider watching home remodeling shows being an expert! ha ha) but I think that some systems utilize coils that circulate hot water to heat the floor. This may or maynot work with solar heat.

Just something else to consider.

You are correct. It's called radiant heat and it is compatable with solar (as you probablly know its typiclly associated with geothermal heating which hubby says we won't need with our particular design, thuough we could still turn out using geothermal), and its deffinitely part of the design! My tootsies are constantly cold in the winter! I've always kicked myself for not insisting on it in our current home, especially on the tile (the rest is wood).
