It did highlight to me to pay special attention when we are visiting play structures that have hidden areas where adults can not see.

Thanks for saying this...I feel like SuperOverProtective mom anywhere there's a hidden play space. Even at the inside playstructure at Epcot (was it at MissionSpace, Woody?? I kept hoping Mrs. Woody didn't think I was a wacko when I couldn't find DD at one point!)...looks really safe, looks clean (yes, I know germs are invisible!), but still...ya just never know!

Yesterday night the very good friends of our friends were killed by someone who attacked them from another car with firearms. Apparently 45 caskets were found inside their car. As of now it looks like it was a revenge (the both come from very rich families, Peralta and Lopez Portillo) because of the way they were killed.

They leave a 4 year old boy and an almost 2 year old baby girl. My heart is breaking for them.

My heart is broken for the two children. I will keep them in my prayers

OK....I voted for her! :goodvibes I love her story about the craziest thing she's ever done. :rotfl:

It's even true! They are a crazy family. A few years ago, we were rolling eggs down the hill at the University and we told her brother if we would pay him $5 if he would run down the hill and pretend he was part of this huge family that was passing. He ran right down and put his arm around the dad. What a silly boy!! We were just kidding!

I'm baffled that you had a time limit at 1st grade. We have no such thing here in CA. I'd ask that teacher to back up that concept with some source before you take it at her word. (not trying to sound snotty but sometimes people just take a path of least resistance and don't really have an idea on why they are doing what they are doing)

What state are you in?

We are in Utah. I asked her why this timing thing was so important when clearly comprehension is so much more important. She thinks it is stupid too and can really think of no reason to give me why this is important right now. The test is called Diebels. They all have it 3 times a year. I can basically see no value to it at all.

Kim

Is there any way they can test her separately from the other kids, and not let her know she's being timed? Not sure if they're able to do that though. Just a thought.

The teacher, who is very nice, said she is going to try to be the test teacher for DD if she is a testing teacher next time because she can tell when she is just guessing and can calm her down and start over. We have just worked very hard to have her understand what she is reading and to have comprehension of what she has just read. At home, we never time her. This seems counterintuitive.

Also, because my father, my DH and I all teach at the university level, we teach to the things will most benefit her in later in her educational career.

Kim

I suggest you get a stopwatch or timer like the kind the teacher uses and practice with her at home so she can get used to it. To start with, use reading material that's really easy for her. If she's just beginning, have her read just random letters or numbers to start. You want her to get used to doing the task while being timed, so the task itself should be very easy for her. Make a chart or graph and plot her score (number correct) each time so she can see her progress. Give her rewards for small increments of progress so she'll feel encouraged. If you're interested, I'd be happy to give you more details or discuss this with you in more depth. PM me, give me your phone # if you want and I'll give you a call.

Thanks for the tips!! She can read quite well when not timed, so that is not an issue. I think we are going to try the stopwatch thing with a variation. I want to make sure she is understanding it, so we may work the two together somehow. The sad thing is we have spent her entire life trying to help her feel peace and calm, because I am so bad at that, and now we are going to push her towards my manic behavior.. frustrating!

Those of you who said you would vote for my sweet cousin. You can vote now at www.Missusa.com. She is Miss Utah.

I have been looking at some of the pageant sites who are ranking the contestants, and can I say YIKES!! Some people are not very nice, and some are downright scary. I sent one to her brother that seems like a stalker. She was really depressed 2 days ago because there are 2 contestants who are really nice on camera but really not nice the rest of the time because they just know they are the winners. She is much better today and having a blast!

Anyway, night all!!

Kim

Thank You!!!

Just voted!! Your niece is for sure the most photogenic of all those I looked at!:hippie:

I am bummed that I had to vote for 3!! She is Definitely the best of the bunch!

Best of luck!

:lmao: Kim, rolling eggs down a hill at the University sounds just as crazy to me as pretending to be part of a large famly walking by. :lmao: :lmao:

That is a great picture! How did you get so lucky to be IN a parade?!
I've gotten to do it three times!

Shortly before the parade there would be cast members wearing sky blue overalls with white clouds approaching guests and inviting them to be in the parade. You are put into groups and taken 'backstage' to learn a quick 'dance routine' just moments before the parade starts. The routine you learn is usually very simple and just repeated during the parade route. And they tell you, if can't remember or can't physically do it, just smile and wave! The first time was soooo much fun because the little girl who had been seated in front of us on Small World just before the parade recognized us in the parade and she got so excited!! The other two times I hunted them down and voluntered, as I had first time DL folks with me.

So I've gotten to dance with Baloo, King Louie (twice) and the prima ballerina Hippo from Fantasia. Oh and we got SPECIAL PINS for perforning also!

Do you ever start to post and try to remember everything you wanted to say, but can't and then feel like you shouldn't post if you forget to say something to someone???

Yep! Even when using the multi quote...if there are soooooo many pages to get caught up on. That was the case earlier this morning....I just gave up and went to see what was happening on the Community Board (which can be a pretty scary place some times).

Just want you all to know I READ everything, and laugh, or sigh or send prayers and hugs...even if I don't post about it. I do try to remember to respond if someone asks me a direct question (as I will be scrolling back up on the post to tell about the Disney parade). Oh....and I still have to send my PM's for 'the lists' too!

MY prayers go out to the children

One of the points Julie mentioned in her post is that the family that was killed did not have a will. I believe it is imperative that every family have a will and Living Trust. It is so much easier if you start making them at a young age and review them once a year.

I was a young widow at 29 and if it weren't for the planning we did when we first got married, I would have been in very serious financial shape.

Just a word to the wise......

you correct in planning early, your never to young to have a will and living Trust.

Have fun at Chuck E Cheese Holly & Tyler!

Thank you Holly, that was really nice of you!

:rotfl: ......thats why I had to start using the multi quote button btw!!!!!

...and thanks for the wishes!:flower3:

I feel the same as clynne and I've been trying to figure out how to mulit post. I think I figured it out. I hope this works

Ok, that one is a my mom thing. The first time I did it, I thought she was insane. But it is kind of fun. You take the hard boiled eggs and roll them down the hill trying to get them not to break, which they always do. Actually there are always a lot of families doing it, it's just a crazy thing. My cousin would do anything for money. One Easter we told him we would give him $5 if he would eat a whole bottle of the super hot habenero peppers. Yep, did that, sick all night...

We never were the normal family on the block!

You just did it! Now when each post shows up on your screen for typing your message, you can type your responses between each one. I usually add in a couple of blank lines to separate them. You can also delete portions OUT OF THE QUOTED POST if your response doesn't apply to the entire post.

:lmao: Kim, we figured this was an Easter thing, but just reading it with no context to put it in just made me :rotfl: :lmao: :rotfl: . Cousin is crazy for putting his arm around a stranger and the rest of the family is on top of a hill rolling eggs down it! :lmao: :lmao: I just got this visual and :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :lmao: .
