Mattress shopping, any tips? DH has been complaining about our bed for years and years, I have no issue with it at all, but he says he lays on it and instantly a pit forms. It's been killing his back forever and so I just agreed we could buy a new one. I'd really been trying to hold out till this mattress hit at least 10 years old, but that's still almost a year and a half away.

I hate mattress shopping almost as much as I hate car shopping. The price ranges are insane, the salespeople are sleazy, there's no way to compare across stores, etc.

We have a king now and we are strongly considering it replacing it with two twin XL mattresses instead. We like vastly different levels of softness - I want to sleep on a cloud and he wants to sleep on a brick wall, we never ever touch each other when we sleep anyways, we are always both on our "side" of the bed so I don't think the joint in the middle will matter, I think it will help us both sleep better due to being less able to feel tossing and turning and I think it will be cheaper. But I also worry we are making an expensive mistake. I don't know which way to go. I think we will end up with innerspring mattresses, he's extremely opposed to memory foam and I want the two mattresses to be the same type. My biggest concern is getting two mattresses that are the same height but different firmness levels.

I think we are also going to get an actual bed this time, with a wooden platform frame instead of just a metal frame and box springs too. Are ikea beds any good? They have some decent looking ones that would match our current furniture.

I have been looking recently as well. I am a big fan of reviews. Trying it out on a showroom floor doesn't mean you'll like in a year, or even overnight. So, I did some google searches for things like best value mattress, best firm, pillowtop, etc. Then i looked for those on Amazon. If a mattress has hundreds of reviews, averaging 4.6 stars, I feel more confident than just sitting on it in a showroom. The reviewer comments are also very helpful, especially if you have already figured out your general preferences (firmness, foam vs gel, etc.)

Also, fwiw, my brother and SIL have a sleep number bed for adjustable firmness and very different preferences. I don't know if I could justify the cost, but they absolutely love it and have raved for years.

DH is a hot sleeper and needed a cool mattress. The salesman, and reviews I read, said latex mattresses are cool. So DH got one, however, it had a pillow top. I'm not sure if the pillow top is the cause, but it is the hottest thing he has ever slept on. I'm a cool sleeper, and I turn into a puddle of sweat when sleeping on that mattress. We're only keeping it now because we are hoping to move soon, and will get a new one after we do.

So, my advice when reading reviews, is to make sure you know exactly which mattress they are referring to. Just "latex," or whatever, isn't good enough because other factors might influence things.

I hate it too, but my husband is the research king and for our next mattress we have decided on Tuft and Needle. They are very highly rated, lots of satisfied reviews. You order online and it's delivered to your door--so no salespeople. If you don't like it after you try it they will refund your money and donate the mattress to a nearby charity.

Same here.

I have slept on Ikea mattresses, not great and I wouldn't go that cheap if you plan to keep it a long time. I have had two mattresses that were combinations of inner springs and memory foam and liked them very much. I thought i would hate pillow top as I like a firm mattress but ended up loving it both times. Do you have Metro Mattress? The reason I liked them was they have a free 10 yr warranty, lots of selection and good prices. In my 7th year, I didn't like the way one side had conformed to body shape making it kind of like a hill in the middle. No hassles, no arguing, I got to pick out a new mattress that I am very happy with

I like shopping on Amazon because I trust the hundred of customers making comments about the products far more than some salesperson at a store who has a financial incentive to sell you the product that makes them the biggest commission.

I got a foam mattress on Amazon that has been great.

Sam's Club/Costco - they have great mattresses and return policies!

Our current mattress is a Serta iComfort. Memory Foam and cooling gel. Love it. Got it at HH Gregg - no discounting for those (mattress company rules) but we were also buying a refrigerator and dishwasher - the dishwasher was basically free (as the mattress discount)

I found a great deal from a guy whose family owns bedding stores nearby - he buys "seconds" by the truckload from their manufacturers - can't sell them in the stores, he rents warehouse space, no returns but we got Sealy Optimums for cheap, cheap, cheap! Found him on craigslist. Mattresses we got were perfect.

has anyone tried a Tempurpedic? I've always been curious if they are worth it

Just went through this process myself. I searched online everywhere for reviews etc and finally decided on a new King mattress from Casper. My wife and I are super impressed with it so far.

There are a couple other online companies that are similar Tuff and Needle, Yogabed, and Lessa. All offer 100 or so nights of use and if you don't like it you get your money back. All of them are memory foam based and have different layers of foam, latex, firmness levels etc. Tuff and Needle is the most firm, Casper is in between soft and firm, and Lessa is the softest.

All of them really are there to stop what you and many others hate. The salesman, the overprice, the regret.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Would love to help since I just went through the process myself. Also if you do decide to go with Casper you can PM me for a $50 dollar code.

Please avoid the sleep number bed. It's an air mattress there are coils inside and it they burst, the mattress is ruined. Go to s speciality store, avoid the department stores.

I have one and I love it. It was a scary purchase, but I am glad I did it. I have had mine for 6 years now. It is actually a good choice if you want two different type of mattresses in a king, because there is no edge on the mattress.

I detest mattress shopping even more than car shopping!

At least with cars, you can look up the "list" price and negotiate on the same exact product between dealers.
We got a king-size Stearns and Foster at a local furniture store, had a low-key salesman but the bed has troughs after 2 years. I think the troughs are caused by the two twin-sized foundations that are under it, so maybe you would have better luck with two actual twins.
We paid $2,000. Going to try to get 5 years out of it.

We bought a bed from Sleepys before that. We had a high-pressure salesman, horrible delivery service (dragged the mattress across the mud they tracked in with them) and the bed "slept hot". The only positive was that Sleepys will exchange the mattress if you cannot stand it (for a mere $400 exchange fee). We had to pay the fee because we were both roasting hot in Feb with the room at 55 degrees, never could have lived with it year round.

Good luck OP!

We bought a Queen size mattress at Sam's last year for our son. The mattress is fine and the price was great. My only issue with Sam's was the delivery. Every mattress in the store had a "Delivery Available" sticker on it. Turns out they contract with a local person to do deliveries and in my area they can't find anyone. I had to find a friend with a truck to get the mattress home. Since then I've checked back with the manager twice. The stickers are still on every mattress/box springs but they still have no delivery available.

Does anyone know how long after purchase you can return a mattress to Costco? We've tried two different mattresses in the last 8 months; both from discount retailers (one from Amazon, one from a warehouse store). Both have been bad purchases, but we really don't have any return options. We are usually happy with a new mattress for the first 30-60 days, then the trouble starts. Would love to try one from Costco, but I'm concerned that we'll be in the same boat.

We have always bought our mattress at The Original Mattress Factory. Good pricing and since they make their own on site you can getting pretty much anything you want

We just bought a mattress from there and, aside from some delivery issues, are extremely happy. No hassle from salespeople, no "sales," just reasonable prices. We looked at 5 other stores before deciding, so we did shop around.

Just be aware that the name of the mattress is different from one seller to the next. It is better to use specs for comparison in prices. I was able to get a $300 discount when I found the same mattress from Simmons under a different name. (price match plus additional 10% off) If you doing the shopping in person and find something you like, just write down the specs and shop around.

Tempurpedic did not have a proper patent and all of the foam mattresses you can buy on Amazon or Overstock are made the same way. They are awesome and cheap. We have them for all our beds, and a lot of the guests who have slept on our guest beds have ordered ones for themselves.

If you return it within 6 months without any stains they won't bat an eye at you, I've heard of people returning memory foam mattresses up to 5 years because they can start to 'pit' (have sunken parts in the mattress). The mattress will usually have a 'x years warranty' which costco will honor.

For the OP, I bought a mattress from costco that was innerspring with a memory gel foam topper, love it, very firm while being gentle on my lower back. It was a queen set and I believe we paid $450.
