Mattress Recommendations

Looking for opinions on mattresses. Husband has back pain and hip pain and can't seem to get a good night sleep. He tosses and turns a lot during the night and can't get comfortable.

When we went mattress hunting, we went with one of the online companies. We already knew (from sleeping on a super soft plush mattress) that we needed something on the firmer side. We went with a Saatva Firm mattress which we adore. At the time of choosing, he was experiencing hip pain and I have back pain -- his issue is resolved, and although I still experience back pains, I love our mattress.

With that being said, we did a lot of research and now there's even more companies online out there. I used Sleepopolis to really narrow it down. I also used it again to help my friends research mattresses.

We bought a Temperpedic pro-Adapt last spring. It’s firm so especially good for a back sleeper. We paired it with an adjustable bed which makes for a good package.

We shopped for a Sleep number as family and friends are fans of that type. I ended up stepping away from that. I saw the techs put mom’s new Sleep Number bed together. Too much that can go wrong and at least for her has gone wrong for the $$$$

Sleep Number is the best. We've had one since 2011 and it has made a huge difference for us. On a regular bed, your body changes but you can't change your bed...on a SN we can change the adjustment depending on how we feel. Love it.

There are so many different types of mattresses, you really have to try them out in a store to see which one is right for you. What someone else likes may not be your preference. Some seem excessively soft while others felt like laying on plywood...........LOL. We bought new mattresses last year and the store will also dispose of your old one. Some local trash companies no longer take such items and you may have trouble getting rid of the old one. Isn't the type of product I would recommend to buy online.

I love our Tempur-Pedic. It's like sleeping on a bed of clay. Very firm and almost zero movement so if one sleeper is restless or gets up a lot the movement doesn't wake the other sleeper.

I've had some back and hip pain for a while, we'd had a Sleep Number for 10 years or so and for awhile sleeping on it would cause pain, no matter how much or little I adjusted it I just hurt.

So in February 2020 we stayed at POFQ for a week. Right away I found myself waking up without pain, now I figured it was just being on vacation at Disney and all the walking I was doing. But at the end of our trip I took the time to see what type of mattress it was, as well as the pillows. Once we got home, I quickly found myself waking up pain again.

So started reaching the mattress. I found some discussions here on the DIS, this thread was new and taking about the mattress on the Disney Dream. By then I'd done a fair amount of research and in April when they went on sale we pulled the trigger and bought a Beautyrest Hospitality Disney Pillow Top mattress. We also bought pillows from Cast Member Linen which had the same ones we had at POFQ.

We had ours delivered in May and I have had solid, pain free wonderful sleeps on it every night since. My biggest regret is that we didn't get it sooner.

Good idea, we HATED our Sleepnumber and had paid a lot for it. Now we have a latex mattress where you can buy layers of varying firmnesses and switch them around to get the best comfort for you. They allow a trial period also and you can switch out layers if need to. Also can buy split mattress which we did if your partner likes different softness. There are a couple companies that do this. Savvy Rest is a good one but expensive. There are less expensive companies that do this also. Also like that it comes with an organic cover and latex is organic if you buy the Dunlop latex but the Talalay is slightly softer but still natural, no odors, actually smells very very faintly of vanilla. Love ours. Just don't get if allergic to latex. We had first purchased a memory foam to replace our uncomfortable Sleepnumber and sent it back bc it smelled so bad and was putting pressure on the back of my legs.

We got a Blue Burrito last year and I was really hesitant about it. It felt good at the store but I know I can get hot with foam. I had back surgery at 17 and am 65 now. Have had on and off issues all these years. We LOVE our Blue Burrito. It is very firm which I prefer but it is still somewhat soft. Sleep really well on it.

My opinion, as hard as you can possibly find. Everyone thinks they want a soft bed, and I admit they do feel great when you first lay down in that softness. However I believe to get a good sleep, you need support. There's no support in all the soft beds.

Took me 6 months to find a bed after my divorce. Previously we fell into the soft bed rut and this time I wasn't messing around looking for something that is initially comfortable but not supportive for the night.

Sleeping on my camp mattress on the ground is the best sleep I get as far as feeling good when I wake up.

Good luck. Any hybrid mattress you buy now has a several month break in period. And this period sucks for sleep. I’ve slept on the couch a bunch of times while breaking in our latest mattress.

The ones in the store are already broken in. But good luck trying to buy a floor model. We tried.

They’re awful. Stayed at a hotel with them once. Never again.

We just bought our second mattress this past weekend from The Original Mattress Factory. Our first one was 13 years old and it was time to replace it, but we were happy with it until the end. This time, we went up a level in firmness of the mattress. The cost was reasonable for a king sized mattress.

I agree with getting a super firm mattress if you're primarily a back sleeper. If you're a side sleeper and a little on the heavier side, it might not be great for you though. I sometimes roll on my side and my shoulder will hurt in the morning.

For us, we bought from a local place (owner was originally from HK). I'm not sure if they manufacture the mattresses themselves or outsource it, but it is super solid. If you flop down on the mattress you do not bounce. At all.
