Just weighing in.... :confused3

3[2(x-2) -7(2x + 3)] - 5[4(2x + 5) - (3x -2)] = 6(x + 1) + 1
3[2x-4-14x-21]-5[8x+20 -3x+2]=6x+6+1 (the - in front of the (3x-2) is like a -1 multiplying through)
3[-12x-25]-5[5x+22]=6x+7
-36x-75-25x-110=6x+7
-61x-185=6x+7
-61x=6x+192
-67x=192
x= -2.8657

This is definitely the correct answer as I ran the answer through the original equation and ended up with the 2 sides equal.

WOW...............Thanks so much!! You guys are amazing. If I follow your work step-by-step, I can actually figure out what you did. Now, I should be able to help DD work through it. Everyone who took the time to work the problem and post, thanks! You really were lifesavers.

I love algebra -- ok how sick does that make me?
As sick as me! I'm actually hoping that someone posts another algebra problem like this sometime. I'm kinda depressed that I missed my chance to try it (retired algebra teacher here).

I agree with your answer. :thumbsup2

OK...........far be it from me to leave you Algebra's pros in the lurch. Here's the one other problem (out of twenty) that she's struggling with.

5 + 6[5(3x + 20) + 2(5x +11)] = 5 - 2[4(x + 2) + 3(7x + 42)]

Have fun!

Darn it! I have to head off to a Girl Scout training. If no one has tackled it by the time I get done, I'll give it a go. I may just do it anyway for some fun! I know I'm sick but what can I say! I love math almost as much as my Pal Mickey!

Had to try...
5 + 6[5(3x + 20) + 2(5x +11)] = 5 - 2[4(x + 2) + 3(7x + 42)]
5 + 6[15x+100+10x+22] = 5 - 2[4x+8+21x+126]
5 + 6(25x+122) = 5 - 2(25x+134)
5 + (150x + 732) = 5 - (50x+268)
5 + 150x + 732= 5 - 50x - 268
150x + 737= -50x - 263
200x = -1000
x = -5

Plug it back in and it works. Looks correct to me.

OP, I'm just curious what grade your DD is in?

I'm another that likes Algebra, I've been helping my son with it as of late... now when he gets to calculus my DH will have to help him!

I'm glad to see everyone was able to help you out earlier!

Oh, oh. I got -10 the first time thru. I'll admit that I didn't take the time to check my work before I posted this.

OK, the first one was fun. But now I'm just getting lazy. Hmmm, where's that google thing when you need it. Ah this looks like a fun website

Cut and past your second problem into it and it agrees with x=-5.

Yup, the second time thru I got x=-5. I can see where I made the mistake the first time. I missed changing signs with the 150 and 50 so I subtracted them instead of adding them and ended up with 100x.

You guys amaze & scare me at the same time. :rotfl: :rotfl2: :lmao:

All of that looked like a bunch of gobblygook to me! DH has to help with math homework around here. The kids know better than to ask me! :thumbsup2

LOL here I sit, taking a break from my OWN algebra test, which is a 'take home' LOL and what do I find? Too funny....FYI- my algebra class is a college level algebra- for those of us out of highschool long enough to forget everything, our highschool or middle school algebra doesnt count- even though I went through to Stats in HS...anyway......one thing I'm glad of, when my own DD's get to this point, It will be fresh in my memory!

3[2(x-2) -7(2x + 3)] - 5[4(2x + 5) - (3x -2)] = 6(x + 1) + 1

expand the () first
3[2x-4-14x-21]-5[8x+20-3x+2]=6x+6+1

combine all terms inside the [] and to the right of the =
3[-12x-25]-5[5x+22]=6x+7

expand the [] next
-36x-75-25x-110=6x+7

simplify the left side of the =
-61x-185=6x+7

Add 61X to both sides
-185=67x+7

Subtact 7 from both sides
-192=67x

Divide both sides by 67
-192/67=x

X = -2.8657

5 + 6[5(3x + 20) + 2(5x +11)] = 5 - 2[4(x + 2) + 3(7x + 42)]

expand the () first
5+6[15x+100+10x+22]=5-2[4x+8+21x+126]

next combine the stuff in the []
5+6[25x+122]=5-2[25x+134]

expand the []
5+150x+732=5-50x-268

combine
150x+737=-50x-263

add 50x to both sides
200x+737=-233

add -737 to both sides
200x=-1000

divide by 200
x=-100/200

x=-5

Ooh-ooh! Pick me, pick me! I used to teach college algebra. However, I'll admit that was over 20 years ago, but I recently helped DS thru his college algebra.

My sister is coming by my house tomorrow evening so I can help her with her Algebra homework. Any of you want to come party with us? :teeth:

I love algebra, too. I just never could figure out how you could buy X amount of nuts at $5.49/lb and Y amount of raisins at $6.57/lb to get a mixture that costs $5.99 per pound.
