Hi! We are a family of 5 (2 adults, 2 children (7 and 3), 1 infant) going in June for 5 nights. I have run the numbers on the regular dining plan for every trip and never come out ahead on it, but this time it's really close. I've added up what we'd pay on the DDP...the cost of plan plus the 1 OOP TS we'd have and the much smaller grocery order. Then I added up what we'd pay OOP...total cost of planned meals, small budget for a few in the park treats like mickey bars and Starbucks, and much larger grocery order based on what we've ordered before. It ends up looking like we'd save a whopping $4 on the plan. Add a glass of wine here or there and we save money...or end up with a smaller grocery order OOP and we'd lose money! Having never done the dining plan, is the convenience worth it in this case? Or is it less convenient to have to stop with little ones and buy food every time instead of just having it in the room/packing it in the bag for the day? I'm obviously a details person to a fault and am driving myself (and my husband!) crazy with this decision! I know this is such a silly thing to be (over)thinking so much but thanks for any input!

With it being that close, I think I would go for the plan just so you can see what it's like and if it works for your family. It doesn't sound like you'd be saving or losing much either way, so it's a good time to give it a try.

I’m the opposite. I wouldn’t do it. I’ve priced it out with my plans and end up behind. If I added more TS in, it would be okay, but then I feel overscheduled. I also wouldn’t be able to cancel a TS meal and not stress over the $ potentially lost and how to make it up. Then I would have to think about how many snacks we have left and the credits left....agh!!! Also, if this is stressing you out now, would it stress you out too much while you are there? Constantly thinking about it?

But that’s just me. The appeal for some folks is not having to worry about cost since they’ve already pre-paid. And you’re close anyway...lol.

I would not do the plan unless you want the convenience of having meals prepaid

F the cost is that close, anything could tip it either way

It's too hot and you don't want to eat ts every day
Someone gets ill, and misses a meal

It's tough, isn't it?

We came out great with it in 2012. In 2015, we skipped a couple of quick service meals and didn’t come out. In 2016 we had a quick trip with no plan. I enjoyed the freedom, but had a credit card bill when we got home. I do like going in knowing it’s all paid for up front. If you’ll stick to your scheduled meals, I would go for the plan.

We always use the plan. This time I crunched the numbers and it wouldn’t be worth it for DH and I but our 2 girls make up more than the difference. We come out ahead before figuring in the alcohol. So we did it again this trip.

First, it kind of depends on your ADRs. We do a lot of character meals which are super expensive for kids and make it easy to come out ahead there. Also, we invariably end up with extra snack credits which we use at the bakery on Main Street or the candy shop in Disney springs and we eat some AMAZING treats to bring home with us. Not generic Mickey rice krispy treats, but caramel apples and cake pops, cupcakes and chocolate covered strawberries. That is a bonus for ya because we eat a couple during our layover in the flight home and then again when we get back for a couple days.

Also, it depends on how you behave in the morning. There is nothing on earth that would make me want to pack food for the parks, we go in with nothing except baby food for the baby. Which means my morning prep is drastically shortened. Also, DH likes the free mug you get with the plan because he can run to the food court and get coffee while I get the kids ready and that’s free which is nice.

Honestly, I would do it because prepay feels all inclusive to us and if we decide to splurge and get steak it’s no big deal. Also, if your kids are big eaters, quick service credits aren’t divided up by kid meal and adult so your kids can each get an adult meal each day on the plan. That’s also nice if you want an extra side of something soft for the baby if yours is ready for solids.

Thank you all so much for the input! It was really helpful to get some outside perspective and funny to see that the advice is split! Most of the pros and cons listed are what I’ve been going around and around on, but there are definitely a few things that I didn’t think of! We do have 3 character meals planned, don’t order appetizers very often and occasionally have a glass of wine. And not packing a snack bag in the morning does sound amazing! I went back and added up what it would be if we went with the smaller grocery order and paid for snacks/mugs OOP and we’d save about $80. So I guess it comes down to do we want to have food in the room or not? And I didn’t think about the heat (first June trip in 10 years!) so what if we bail on the parks to go to pool? This is tough haha!

In my opinion, the freedom to eat which type of meal and order whichever courses I want is more convenient than paying with a dining plan and eating to the rules.

My thoughts exactly. We had the DDP one time, at a heavy discount, and I really didn't like having to think about credits left, what's included, etc. We like to order what we want. We try not to obsess too much over WDW dining. Most of it is just average and virtually all of it is overpriced.

The choice is hard. I am trying Decide the same thing for myself and hubby. Time to sit down and make up a spreadsheet. We had the quick service a couple years ago and liked that I didn’t have to make reservations.

I think an important question would be are you the sort who would be more stressed by anticipating the bill at every meal or about the number of credits you may still have left near the end of your trip, assuming either of those might apply to you.

My wife and I have found that we prefer to have the DP but we are not unwilling to go without it, it's all a matter of the best deal for us. But some of what we like about it is knowing that, for the most part, we can order anything on the menu and not worry about the cost of it. And we don't avoid the cheaper options if that's what we're in the mood for, but if we want to get the steak or seafood we aren't shy about it either. She and I are sort of kind of a little bit foodies, though, so it is not unheard of for us to get an appetizer at dinner even on the regular DP when those aren't covered, and we usually have a cocktail or a glass of wine with dinner too, and this being the first year that alcohol is included, that means that the value for us just went up. And while we don't often indulge at home, whenever we vacation there is room for dessert. In fact, our upcoming trip we are planning to upgrade to DxDDP because then the appetizers are covered and we won't be as shy about some of the signature options, either. We have never avoided signatures, but when we were on the regular plan we were always a bit more cautious so that we could make our credits stretch. Some people might argue that by choosing more signatures for our upcoming trip that we would be losing value, but that's not how we see it. We are of the opinion that value is both an objective and subjective thing. Obviously our situation is different as there are just two of us and neither of us is an especially picky eater or has any allergies, but especially looking at the cost of the Dx plan, we can easily get the cost of one person's plan for the day out of a single dinner at Raglan Road (a favorite of ours), so that means that as long as we can make up the cost of the other person's plan for that day at breakfast and lunch we come out ahead financially. Easily done with the cost of meals, even QS. So there's the objective part. But the subjective part is, again, knowing that we don't have to stop and think about what we're ordering or talk ourselves into something cheaper. We don't talk ourselves into the most expensive items to justify the cost, we don't think about it, we just order what we want then because it's taken care of. That's the subjective value for us, along with having it taken care of in advance aside from the tip.

But beyond the financial aspects of it, as anyone who has been knows, you'll put a lot of miles on your feet on a day at Disney and it's easy to feel, even at a leisurely pace, that you're just go-go-going. We enjoy the chance to stop, sit down for an hour (and change sometimes), have a drink, and just enjoy the meal together. It's a little break and a chance to recharge before we get back into the hustle and bustle of the parks and the rides. We love the whole experience, but that little span of calm is something we look forward to.

Do you believe that your family will eat the way that the dining plan is laid out? Do you usually get entrees when you eat out at restaurants, or are you sometimes happier with an appetizer and a side? Do you ever prefer to share meals, or does everyone in your family usually get his/her own meal? Does your family mainly drink water or will they use the beverage entitlement at meals? For the most part the DP does not work for how DH and I prefer to eat. Most of the time I prefer the appetizers at WDW restaurants, or DH and I will split an entree and an app or two, I also find that we both eat a lot less food when it is hot, and we don't snack nearly as much as we think we would, or would if we were bored at work or just hanging out at home. We have also had a couple trips where DH got sick and was quarantined in the room for at least a day and a half, since we weren't on the plan it wasn't a big deal, but could have been more of an issue if we were on the DP. The dining plan can be great for many families, but for mine it just doesn't work for how we like to eat, and feels very confining to us.

We will be 5 guests our coming July trip and for half of our stay the DxDP will allow us to break even or better so I'm going with it. For the other part of our WDW time ( we're doing a split stay) I'm opting for OOP since based on our ADRs the math says we are better w/o it.
Knowing how your group eats and where you plan to do it is a good thing for some:).
Were I to do the math and come up close towards a dining plans' breakeven point.. I'd go for the plan just to get the cost out of the way.

What if you put the cost of what the Dining Plan costs onto a Disney gift card or pre-load visa or mastercard (though that will have the activation fee)?

You could still eat what you want but if you've got leftover money in the end you could use it for souvenirs, or whatnot.

It's an advice I've seen a lot and in this case since your previous trips you've done without the Dining Plan you know how you all will generally eat.

As far as convenient when it comes to the Dining plan convenience comes in multiple ways..financially from the comments I've seen it's not usually saving people much if any money but if it means you don't overthink on pricing of items, if it means you can just tell the waiter/waitress that you're on the DDP and go from there there can be convenience in that.

For me personally the type of food and drink I eat in hotter temps is different than in cooler temps. In September we drank something like 90% water water water. We had a few beers throughout our trip between WDW and Universal but they were in the evening. Dehydration was a large concern for me and so I didn't have pop during the day with the exception of the day we went to DS in the afternoon and ate at D-Luxe burger on our departure day back home. We had dessert at dinner at Skipper Canteen but not at dinner at Mama Melrose or at lunch at 50s Prime Time. We didn't have apps at all.

Thank you all again! I’ve been talking my husband’s ear off some more and I think we are going to try the plan this time. We rarely order appetizers and everyone always gets their own meal (the ones who are not big eaters are picky so rarely would pick the same thing to share!), so it does line up with how we eat at meals and I’ve planned the places we would eat with or without the plan. It’s really coming down to the snacks, and it definitely seems more fun (and will sound better in the heat) to get mickey bars and frozen lemonades at the park instead of packing a bag of the usual goldfish and fruit snacks! My husband also reminded me that we always end up with a fair amount of leftover food whenever we do the big grocery order, which is just as much a waste of food and money as not using all of our snack credits. We also will get a few more trips in before we have Disney adults and less character meals, so might as well try it now and see if we come out ahead for future reference haha. I’d probably track the spending either way at this point!

I think it sounds like the plan may work out really well for you, have a great trip!!!!

I can’t ignore the price if I’m paying OOP, even if I have a stack of Disney gift cards to use.

I did think about doing the gift card, but I think I'd be more nervous about leaving unused money on those! We aren't big souvenir people and it'll probably be 2 years until our next trip after this one, and I don't see myself saving them until then either. And now that we've decided to use the plan, we are having fun planning out the fun drinks we are going to get with dinner haha!

That's why I mentioned a visa or mastercard pre-loaded card. You do have to take out the activation fee so that's a con but it does enable you to spend it whereever visa or mastercard is accepted.

But glad to hear you made a decision :)

I somehow totally missed that suggestion! Oops! Sorry about that!

I've switched to doing the math on getting our money's worth out of the dining plan (instead of just vs what we'd spend OOP if doing a grocery order) and I think we should come out fairly well that way. I added the cost of the plan with the cost of our one OOP table service, and subtracted the cost of what we would mostly like spend on meals. It leaves us needing to spend $185 of snacks/mugs/drinks. The mugs alone are $80 so we should make out pretty well I hope!
