My SIL has to do an alternative education plan for pulling my DNephew out for our upcoming trip. We've got a good plan to address all subjects except math. He's in 6th grade, and doing the pre-algebra thing. Any ideas?
I am certainly no math whiz, but how about something to do with transportation, bus schedules, arrival times, distance, something?? "If a family leaves the hotel at x o'clock, waits y minutes for the bus, go 30 mph for 10 minutes, how long till they get to their breakfast ressie at Crystal Palace?"
Permutations
For example, how many ways to ride splash, big thunder, and space mountain?
Combinations
How many possible meal combinations if you can choose from 2 beverages, 3 main dishes, and 2 desserts on your meal plan?
Statistics:
Average length of ride?
Average number of people in a line?
Average wait time based on the wait time boards? Also did minimum and maximum and range here.
A graph could even be included.
Maybe he could "interview" some of the CMs about how they use math in everyday life and do a short paper on it. I know that "writing across the curriculum" is stressed in our district. As a high school special education teacher (collaborative algebra and geometry), one of the questions that I am always asked is "How will we ever use this?" I would appreciate a student who could find a variety of answers for me. I would hate the thought that your child was doing tons of work on vacation.
