Ok my son printed off some "fun math" for over the holidays off some website and this one is driving me CARAZZYYY! I'm blonde, and horrible at math so please have mercy on me with this one.

Ok - here we go

You see a shirt you want for $97.

You don't have the money so you borrow $50 from your mom and $50 from your dad.

$50 + $50 = $100.

You buy the shirt and have $3.00 in change.

You give your dad $1 and your mom $1 and keep the other $1 for yourself.

Now you owe your mom $49 and your dad $49.

$49 + $49= $98 + $1 you kept for yourself = $99

Where is the other dollar?

I believe that the $49 you owe your mom plus the $49 you owe your dad, LESS the dollar you kept add up to the $97 you paid for the shirt.

This could be completely off, but here is what I think.

Forget the dollar you kept and lets say the shirt cost 98 dollars for the moment.
You borrowed 50 from your mom and 50 from your dad.
Pay for the 98 dollar shirt
Then you got 2 dollars back.
You give 1 dollar to your mom and 1 dollar to your dad.
The debts is not 49 + 49 = 98 -- Notice that the 2 dollars payed off the debt.

Now back to the real question. You paid off 2 off two dollars of the debt and could pay a 3rd dollar if you wanted too.

49+ 49 = 98

You owe each of your parents $49 which is the cost of the shirt plus the dollar you kept. 49 + 49 = 97 + 1

You owe each of your parents 49 dollars making the total 98 because you didn't have a dollar of your own in the first place.

The remaining 2 dollars 100-98=2 are the two dollars you paid back to your parents.

The dollar in your pocket is not a "gain" it's still a "debt" owed to your parents.

There is no "other dollar." If you need to single out a dollar than it's in your pocket.

Holy Cow Im a burnette and am HORRIBLE at math

Lets go at it this way:

$50(m) + 50(d) = $100

Pay parents $1(m) + $1(d) = $98

$49(m) + $49(d) = $98

$2.00 left over in this scenario
Minus $1.00 because the shirt is $97

You cant keep $1.00. The $1 is not missing its used in the $97 its not an even number. $97 divided by 2 is = $48.50....

Sorry for the jumbled explanation but I started off confused lol. hope this kind of helps

I agree all the money is accounted for, I just don't know how to explain it.

If the shirt was $98 and you borrowed $50 from mom & $50 from dad, you have $2 in change. You give them each $1, so you owe each $49. It's all even, right?

Now, since the shirt was $97, and if you borrowed the exact amount from mom & dad, you'd owe each $48.50. So the dollar in your pocket gets split between the two (giving each $1.50 back), plus the $97 you still owe ($48.50 each) = $100.
