Maternal AFP UPDATE

Glad to hear everything looked good in the 20 week scan.

My story, for what it‘s worth, when I was 41, I found out I was pregnant with our 3rd child In 1995. I saw a high risk OB for all three pregnancies due to my age. My AFP blood test was elevated for the first time with baby #3, and my doctor offered the amnio as an option. As a well known and experienced high risk doctor in New Orleans, he had a lot of experience in doing amnios, so the risk of losing the pregnancy was very very low. I had no intention to abort the pregnancy, I wanted to be prepared if the baby had issues. The test went without a hitch, the baby had no genetic defects, and was born healthy in November 1995. Interesting to me was that I also was diagnosed with borderline gestational diabetes. I have always wondered about whether there was a link between the high AFP reading and my gestational diabetes. My blood sugar was monitored weekly throughout the pregnancy, and we both did well with me only gaining 19 pounds ( I was low to average weight before becoming pregnant), and luckily by watching my weight since I have not had further problems with diabetes. There was no discussion about insurance covering the amnio back in 1995.

@snappy Thanks for sharing! I had an amino in 1992 and no insurance issue either.

It’s good news as far as the baby goes but doc thinks it is a placenta issue, which will needs lots of monitoring. It could lead to some not great outcomes.
