(Washington) Mary Cheney, the openly gay daughter of Vice President Dick Cheney, has given birth to a son.

Samuel David Cheney was born this morning at Sibley Hospital in Washington, weighing in at 8 lbs., 6 oz.

Cheney and her partner of 15 years, Heather Poe, live in Virginia. Under that state's law Poe is not considered a co-parent and has no legal rights.

The pregnancy raised the ire of religious conservatives who accused Cheney of having the baby for poitical purposes to push "a gay agenda"

In a February speech at Barnard College she dismissed the criticism.

"This is a baby," Cheney said. "This is a blessing from God. It is not a political statement. It is not a prop to be used in a debate by people on either side of an issue. It is my child."

A week earlier Dick Cheney became testy when CNN's Wolf Blitzer asked him what he thought of conservatives who are critical of his daughter's pregnancy. Cheney told Blitzer he was "over the line."

Samuel David is Dick Cheney's sixth grandchild.

Congrats, Mary 'n Heather :yay:

Yes, I saw this! They must be so happy.

Would it be too much to ask for old Dick Cheney to actually say in public that he is thrilled that he has a new grandson? He's quick to throw up a wall with "over the line" comments, but how about showing unconditional love (yes, in words) for his daughter, her lifestyle, her partner, and their child?

One good dose of accepting that little family may make the critics shut up for ten seconds, ya' know?

Here's an update on Baby Samuel:

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Dick Cheney's daughter Mary delivered an 8-pound, 6-ounce baby boy on Wednesday, the first child for her and her female partner of 15 years, Heather Poe.

Samuel David Cheney was born at 9:46 a.m. at Sibley Hospital in Washington, the vice president's office announced. Vice President Cheney and his wife, Lynne, paid a visit to their new — and sixth — grandchild a few hours later.

Mary Cheney announced in December that she and Poe had decided to start a family. Her decision to become pregnant and raise a child with Poe was criticized in some conservative circles. James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, asserted that children need to be reared by heterosexual married couples, for instance.

The vice president bristled at questions on the topic.

Mary Cheney was an aide to her father during the 2004 campaign and now is vice president for consumer advocacy at AOL.

James Dobson had this to say:
“We should not enter into yet another untested and far-reaching social experiment, this one driven by the desires of same-sex couples to bear and raise children,” Dobson said at the time on the organization’s Web site. However, he said his position was not meant to “harm or insult women such as Cheney and Poe.”

Does anyone else get the feeling that if this had been, say, Chelsea Clinton and her female partner that Dobson wouldn't have been quite so 'diplomatic' in his phrasing??

Dobson, or Dodson, whatever his name is...

He advocates the coporal punishment of learning disabled children, if I remember correctly. And I do.

Yes, it must just kill those Moral Majority sorts that there is a lesbian couple in the "Republican" woodpile. :confused3

Anyone else see anything horribly wrong with that statement? :rolleyes1

Heterosexual here, but...
Sometimes, when referring to my son, I say, "my son." Sometimes, I say, "our son." It really just depends on the conversation, the person I'm talking to, the context, etc. It doesn't mean I am suggesting he isn't also my husband's child! I understand why people might be a little upset over that wording given the politically-charged BS surrounding her pregnancy and the birth, but...that doesn't mean she should never refer to HER SON as HER SON. I'm sure she considers him every bit her partner's child, as well. She is also probably well aware that the media spotlight is on them as a family because of HER, and who her father is, so she could be responding specifically to that targeting. After all, her partner having a child would never make the news, if she were with someone else. Just a little perspective.
On another note, I think it's a hundred different kinds of messed up that people are more concerned about a couple of fifteen years having a baby (just because they happen to be lesbians) than they are about teenage criminals and drug addicts popping out kids by 3 different fathers by the time they're 18, and raising them on welfare.

What a narrow minded twit! They had a baby, not an experiment. Being a straight, married mom with 2 kids I know how hard it is to raise kids in this world. To have to do it under a microscope with those folks waiting to see how the experiment gets messed up must be infuriating.

I wish Mary, Heather and baby Samuel nothing but the best.
