Martinique - on our own

We are looking at going it on our own in Martinique - Fort-de-France. From everything I've read, it says that not much is happening at the port and to get away to a beach. Any suggestions? We are bringing our own snorkel gear. (Kids ages are 12, 13)

I ran there on my own when we were there on the Wonder last January. There is a small beach there, just to the right of where the ship parked, a boardwalk type path leads over there. I was running along and before i realized it I was in the middle of a bunch of those giant lizards right near the beach. I scared them and they scared me, we reached a uncomfortable truce without a confrontation, they ran one way and I ran the other. I ran 3 or 4 miles and saw a lot of the city. It was my favorite port of that cruise. The city is right near the port, it's very walkable.

We were there over a year ago and it was tough deciding what to do. I typically research on tripadvisor and we either book a private tour or DIY. In all our cruises we have only booked through DCL for two excursions and this was one of those times. We ended up booking the Belfort Banana Plantation and it was actually a fun day and I still crave their banana chips.

I think we are going to stick with the beach and snorkel at bat cave thru DCL...don't love our 7:45am time but that's all they've got right now. Since we'll be back by 11:30 we can go explore the city a bit. Thanks all!

Maybe once on the ship you can change times? Have fun! We loved all the beach days on this cruise.
