We normally stay on WDW property, but since I was in Orlando for a convention, we stayed at the Marriott Orlando World Center (I was trying to get the Swan/Dolphin on Priceline and ended up with Marriott for $97 a night). I prefer to use Happy Limo for our transport, but in this case we had to rent a car due to commuting to the conference (MCO Avis via Priceline). The hotel was a very pleasant surprise...so nice, in fact, that we didn't even go to the parks on Sat. and Sun. except for MNSSHP on Sun. night! Hubby and I are spa people, so we had massages and lounging around in the pools, then ate at the Japanese steakhouse on site for dinner (Kobe is much better, but it was not bad). It was only a very short drive to the Swam/Dolphin...we were there each morning in less than 10 minutes. I have heard that it's nice to stay in one of the towers because yoiu can see the fireworks, but we were on the lobby level, not far from the check-in desk. It was a very convenient location, with very little traffic passing our room. The Starbucks in the lobby was dangerously close! The only thing I didn't like is that you have to pass a large smoking area to get to those rooms...the stench of cigars and smoke gagged us every night as we walked by.
This is primarily a convention hotel, but even though a large convention was going on during our stay, it never felt crowded. We parked in the lots rather than the tower...it can be a bit of a hike to your car, but nothing unreasonable. All in all, I enjoyed the experience much more than I thought I would. The only thing I didn't like was that they do not have complimentary transportation to WDW...I think such an upscale resort definitely should. But we were lucky...we left the car at the Swan/Dolphin after the conference each day while we visited the parks, so it didn't inconvenience us too badly.
