Married Last Names

So maybe its just me, but I think this is the stupidest thing ever....

My co-worker, Becky Smith, is engaged to Bob Smith. Strange enough, but hey, it happens. Smith is her maiden name.

She is planning on hyphenating her last name to: Smith-Smith.

Huh?

Eleanor Roosevelt's maiden name was also Roosevelt. She was a fifth cousin to her husband. She just stuck to one Roosevelt in her signature.

This reminds me. On my mother's side, maybe my great-great grandparents, Swedish immigrants, etc. A Johnson married a Johnson. No relation either.

They did not hyphenate to Johnson-Johnson.

They didn't sell Q-Tips either.

Yeah that seems rather silly...
Biggest paperwork mistake I ever made was legally hyphenating my name when I got married. It's been a hassle ever since and I wish I hadn't done it. Oh well...at least it's not Smith-Smith!

Me too! I hyphenating my last name when I married in 2003. If I shared my married last name you'd have to do a double take. Lots of Z's. Not one person has ever pronounced it the way I was told it was pronounced. Unfortunately/fornunately there are every few of this last name in the country. I believe my son and I are the only ones in New England (my ex passed away in 2016)

She could change her middle name to her maiden name if she just really wants to have the experience of going to the Social Security Office to change her name. Then she could still be FirstName Smith Smith, but one would be her middle name, therefore not a hyphenated last name.

Not only does it seem like an unnecessary hassle to change the name, but she's also now going to feel obligated to explain "it's Smith-Smith because my maiden name was Smith and my husband's name was Smith, but don't worry we're not really related" for the rest of her life.

I don't get the hyphenated name thing. And as time goes on, I would not want to have to write out a long name on everything I sign. Back in the day, women took their husband's name and were content to do so. Times have changed.

So did I. I didn't want to hyphenate my last name, but still wanted my family name as part of my legal name. It's definitely an option.

I did. I dropped my original middle name and changed it to my maiden name. I wanted to keep my maiden name but I wanted my future children to have the same last name as my husband.
