Married at First Sight, Season 4

Oh, how did you figure that out? I am so naive. But that makes a lot more sense! I even thought he looked a bit "stoned" in some of his interviews/time with her.

I'm not the one you asked, but I just felt like that whole conversation seemed "off" to me if it was about cigarettes. Why did he need to do it every day if he was only an occasional smoker? Why was she as bothered as she was if she was ok with an occasional smoker.

Well, it makes sense now. He made some comments about, "This is vacation, so I want to relax and have a good time."

I didn't think about it until this thread. Yup, I live under a rock.

i watched one episode and laughed at one of the brides she is 24 and thinking her dating life is over after a few bad break ups and getting married will make her happy, dude i'm older then her i should be on the show

One thing I noticed, I think, is that with the interviews I've seen with Jamie Otis, the only person's interview that looks very different, is Heather's. I have been thinking she bailed before their decision day. I could be wrong, but every clip I've seen, it doesn't appear that she sits down face to face in the same room as Jamie, and it's a totally different room. I didn't think about the possibility that it might be marijuana instead of cigarettes. I was one of those people who could smoke cigarettes on my vacation and then not smoke again for months, a year.... (I don't smoke at all now, and haven't since 2008.) If she didn't want any smoking, she should not have said that occasional smoking was fine. For me, it's a deal breaker. Whether it's just cigarettes or weed. I just cannot deal with the smoke.
Oh, ETA: I totally can believe Derrick when he says she drinks too much and could be an alcoholic.

I cannot believe Tom hasn't said anything about that bus yet, and the way they edit the scenes from upcoming shows, it looks like she doesn't know until they actually pull up to the thing. Honestly, him not telling me before hand, would really piss me off. That's kind of a big thing. And as I said before, I'm not totally against the whole tiny house concept, so that fact that he lives in a converted bus, might not really upset me, but geeze, give me a heads up! I really want to see inside that whole bus.

Nick, is kind of weird. I don't know if it's because he is just super shy, or what. I find it odd that he cannot tell her she is beautiful. Even just a, "you look nice today" would be nice. I don't know what to make of those two, very awkward.

I don't think she's talking about cigarette smoking, if you catch my drift. Apparently, he's a regular pot smoker.

Huh, I guess that didn't occur to me either, mostly because she said she didn't want to kiss someone that smelled like they'd been smoking so I assumed they meant tobacco when she said he smelled. You really think it's pot? Kind of risky to bring drugs into a foreign country (while being filmed no less) so he would likely have purchased them on the honeymoon if your guess is right.

Eta: just read that link above so yeah, makes sense! They should say that though! It makes her look irrational to react that way over a cigarette if he's really doing drugs instead.

Just the way they "talk" about it. It always seems something was "edited" out of the conversation....listen closely to the conversation and it seems like they say "smoke POT" but the word pot gets dropped. It also more closely explains his conversation about "I don't smoke everyday at home, but I'm on vacation." Who smokes cigarettes while on vacation?!?! If anything, the converse is more likely to be true. Pot, OTOH, is sort of like alcohol....I don't drink often at all while at home (maybe once a week if we are out to dinner), but if we're at an all-inclusive for a week, heck yeah, I'll have a drink or two every day. LOL (Note: I don't "get drunk", but I do enjoy an afternoon cocktail by the pool). So, I got that he was saying "sure, since I'm on vacation, I'll smoke a little dope...." And, why he so quickly pointed to her alcohol usage. They are pretty equivalent in my book, too. Someone who "needs" to smoke pot every day of the year has as much of a problem as someone who needs to drink every day. :-)

They aren't in a foreign country. They are in Puerto Rico. I don't think Derek had a passport (reference was made to that in at least one episode). No passport required for Puerto Rico. No customs. No immigration. No different than flying to California or Florida.

I think that Nick is just painfully shy. I don't know how he is a real estate sales person with that shyness, but I don't really understand exactly what he does. They said vacation homes, but I thought that may mean "Timeshare sales."

He's not. He manages vacation properties. Different skill set entirely. :-)

Oh that's right, my mistake, I kept thinking they were the ones in the DR but you're correct (I promise I know PR isn't another country haha). You're still not allowed to fly with pot regardless.

Of course. But, when you are flying domestically, it's far less of an issue as a practical matter. It's not a liquid. It doesn't light up on any X-ray or set off the metal detectors. I'd guess the chances of getting caught are somewhere between slim and none. I'd never do it, but I'm willing to bet that Derek isn't the only one who has.

I'm feeling a little more sympathetic to Heather now too. I was also puzzled why she said occasional smoking was okay but was so clearly totally turned off by it. I would be turned off too, but would have said so right up front instead of trying to seem open to it. "Occasional" is so subjective!

Overall I still find myself siding with Derek because it seems like he is trying so hard and she has just shut down. They are kind of a train wreck. I wish they had agreed to no smoking, no drinking, and just tried to immerse themselves in finding out about each other. It seems like he wanted really badly to be part of a pretty interdependent couple and she wants to maintain more independence.

Sadly, I think the same thing that is shutting them down that way may shut the other couple - sonia and nick - down too if Nick can't open up a bit and give her some of the feedback she is seeking.

He kind of reminds me of my son. He's (my son) a very private person and has a bit of social anxiety, however at work he is very confident and is pretty outgoing, etc. It's only in social situations that he feels awkward and clams up.

That's really what made me think it was pot. If someone is ok with it occasionally, it shouldn't cause that big a reaction if they happen to do it a little more than occasionally on vacation. It just felt like there was more going on that wasn't being shown.

I was feeling bad for Derek for a nano second, but when he said she was no spring chicken and old, he crossed a line.
That was not nice, for God's sake she's like 32.
He was also referring her as "this girl", rude, rude, rude.
Heather is not all that great either, IMO..... she isn't even trying, she rode her bike away from him and went back up at of the cave while his back was turned and he was walking the opposite direction thinking they were going for a stroll.

They were for sure the replacement couple. There was a girl who dropped out the night before the wedding and they had to scramble to get another couple fast and this was the result. NOT GOOD

How did I not know that?

I felt like Derek's rude remarks were said out of frustration. He kind of corrected himself and said something to the effect of "no, she just doesn't like me." His feelings are hurt so he's pushing back. A lot of his behavior last night would be alarming except that it was so obviously done through the filter of someone whose feelings were hurt. He's saying the things we would normally vent to our best friend to a camera!

That kind of makes it worse though. As much as I feel bad for him, if he's the type that let's frustration overwhelm him at a time when he should be on his very best behaviour, or worse yet - believes it's OK to lash out in hurtful ways to retaliate against a spouse that has hurt you, the wife better end this NOW. He will be a terrible husband. :sad2:

I agree with that.

That's not to say she behaved well either. But I don't see his behavior as justified at all. Definitely not a trait I would want in a spouse. I'm sort of surprised the "experts" didn't see that in him and exclude him for that reason.
