My son and his new wife will be leaving on their cruise in a couple of months. They were told by their TA to bring the marriage lecence but friends of ours just back said they never were ask to show it. Do you need it or not??? I know ee did not when we last cruised about 1 year ago...smjj

I always carry it but have never been asked to see it. I just figured it is no big deal to carry one more doc to be safe.

I always take it and have never needed it. I'd rather be safe than sorry!

Just a thought...you said "new wife" is this a honeymoon right after the wedding? If so will her lisence/id even be in her new name yet? If not, then I wouldnt think that would be a problem.
Ive done 1 cruise for my honeymoon(name not changed on lisence) and 2 subsequent cruises (with my married name) and never needed a marrige certificate.

Thanks for the quick replies everyone:
CamColt: I said new wife but actually they will have been maiired 3 months by the time they cruise. She probably will have had all the name changes done by then. Thanks again...smjj

The only reason she would need to carry her marriage license is if her name that she is registered under is not the same as her ID. Then, yes you will need to show your marriage license to prove that you've changed your name. If there is a 3 month gap, and They've registered under their married name as husband and wife, than no they will not need anything other than their ID's and BC's OR better yet PASSPORTS.

When booking our honeymoon (Windjammer BF Cruise to Venezuela) I booked myself under my maiden name so that it matched my PASSPORT. I could not get a new passport until I sent in the proper documentation (marriage license, etc.) in and had it re-done with my new name, and since we went right on our honeymoon the week following our wedding, I could only use my old passport and so I actually had to book under my maiden name.

Sounds like they've booked as husband and wife, and that she will have an ID with her married name on it by then, so NO then they will not need thier Marriage License.

If the last name on the birth certificate does not match the last name on the Drivers License or Photo ID then you do need to bring a copy of the Marriage License. You have to show a "paper trail" of how your name got from the the one on the birth certificate to the one on your DL.

If you are divorced and changed your name you have to bring your BC, Divorce Decree, Marriage License, and Photo ID. At that point it is better to get a passport with all those papers. ;)

Now 9 times out of 10 the officials won't even ask for the Marriage License but if you get one that is really a stickler for the rules wouldn't it be better to bring the extra piece of paper with you? I've heard of people being held up at immigration for an hour because all their papers weren't in order and the thing missing was the marriage license.

I would certainly bring it! It doesnt take up alot of space and they should be able to get a duplicate copy that is certified so they dont have to take their original. Hubby and I did that so we have our original one framed (makes him remember that he is married LOL) and then we have the duplicate that we use to travel with. Havent been asked for it yet..but would hate to not be able to board just because someone decided I needed it.

You need two forms of ID --- the easiest would be passport and picture driver's license --- in which case as long as the name on the passport & license match each other AND the name under which you registered with DCL, the marriage license isn't needed.

But if one of your forms of ID is your birth certificate, then as a precaution I'd recommend taking the marriage license as part of the paper trail that explains the name on the BC not matching the name on the driver's license.

As a side note, for legal purposes, it might not be a bad idea to carry the marriage license to prove who is the legal spouse. In case of emergency, you don't want to be quibbling over who can or cannot make decisions on the behalf of their spouse.

I've been on 5 DCL cruises and for the first 3 brought my marriage certificate but was never asked for it. The last two I used a passport which is all in one so didn't need anything else. I don't think you will need it if the birth date is the same on the liscense as the birth certificate, but why chance it - as someone else said it doesn't take much room.
