Marijuana

Should Marijuana be legalized for any purpose?

  • Yes, but only for medicinal purposes

  • Yes, for all. Will cut down on overcrowding in prisons

  • Absolutely not. It's a drug and is dangerous.

  • I have never thought about it, it doesn't apply to me or anyone I know.

  • I don't care

Don't think we have talked about this. And I think it's going to become more and more relevent as the years go by.

Currently, 13 states have decriminalized medicine. Conneticut is the latest, just this past week. This does not mean it has been legalized. From what I understand, decriminalization means if you are caught with an ounce or less, you will receive a civil infraction.

What I want to discuss is the Federal legalization of medicinal marijuana. Marijuana available only through a doctors prescription, only obtained at a pharmacy and grown and taxed by the federal government. As someone who may benefit from this, I wish we could go a forward a little faster. I read on a website (sorry, can't remember which one, so take it as you wish) that 46% of Americans are in favor of legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes. Does this line up with your beliefs? Do people need to rethink their perception of this drug? Personally, I think alcohol is more dangerous to the body. You don't even have to smoke pot, it can be baked in brownies, cookies etc, so you aren't damaging your lungs, and possibly it could be available in pill form.

I agree. Pot is far less physically addicting than alcohol, cigarettes, and other prescription drugs, and less harmful on the body. There are many people who would be helped if they had access. Plus, it would be much safer to buy it legally.

Yes.

I am on a sedative type drug, that my body is now addicted to because I have been on it so long. And it's no longer works. But I can't quit cold turkey because it literally could kill me. I would have to taper off very slowly. I do not like being stuck with this medication. I strongly believe that pot would be a good substitute but I'm too scared to try and look for someone to buy it from.

Wow, so far 18-1 (I voted as part of the 18). Maybe people are more open to this than I thought. I'm honestly surprised. In a good way!

I think Arizona can be added to the list of legalizing medical marijuana. For those that need it I see nothing wrong with this change. It is less damaging than alcohol and benefits many that can't get relief from disabling conditions.

It's a waste that so many people that could really benefit from this, can't get it and are on pharmaceuticals with many more side effects. Once the gov't figures out how to tax it, it'll be legal.

Am I the only one who does not believe it should be legalized?

I live in a state where it is legal "for medical purposes" If you want an Rx, you can get one, it is SO easy. People are on Craigslist selling their weed!

Now they are talking about having pot clubs where you can go smoke pot together. Give me a break! That's not for medical reasons, a club for smoking pot!

They should have legalized it 40 years ago. Think about all that lost revenue (plenty of it would have been from me back then :rotfl:). I'm in a state where it's legal for medicinal purposes but it should be legal for everyone.

Legalize it, and regulate it....what's the huge difference between marijuana and tobacco? What's the difference between marijuana and alcohol? If it's legal and regulated (and taxed ;)) then how would marijuana be more dangerous than those other drugs which are legal for ADULTS?

I don't care one way or the other if it is legalized. I have no desire to smoke it (or eat it) but I don't care if other people do.

Yes it should be legalized! It should taxed just like booze. Think of the state and federal coffers with all that tax money! Kaching!!

I'm for legal for medicinal purposes only and strictly controlled for that. That's backing off from being totally against it for almost 50 years. Yes, that's coming from a musician and someone who comes from an era where, supposedly, "everyone did it." That's just a cop-out for those who did it (or still do) and try to rationalize their foolishness.

I say we legalise it just like cigarettes and use the tax profits for education. Why not?

Legalize it. Legalize all drugs. Let the junkies out of prison. Tax the drugs and use the money to set up treatment centers for the people that want help. Take the money away from the gangs and dealers.

My mother has been a drug addict since I was a year old. I have never met anyone that didn't do drugs because they couldn't find them or because they were illegal. If people want to throw their life away they will.

I also don't think pot is any worse than beer.

Yes legalize it. I am a responsible middle aged SAHM who doesn't break the law (now) and its been a really long time since i've enjoyed a good .............. ;)

I'm not sure how I feel about it. It sounds reasonable to legalize it for medicinal purposes, though.

It's not like tobacco because tobacco doesn't impair your mind.

I admit I don't know much about marijuana, but if it makes people act like drunks, then I don't think we need more impaired drivers on the roads. There are so many DUIs as it is.

If it's legalized to the general public, will people who never wanted to smoke it then smoke it because it's legal? That's what I'm afraid of, having tons more people being able to walk into a store and get stoned and get into a car. At least if it stays illegal, people will be less inclined to take a chance of breaking the law to get high.

I'd have to do more research to see how marijuana affects people when they're out in public. Maybe someone here could fill me in.

It's a tough decision for me to make, because while I believe in personal freedoms (like getting high if you want to), I'm afraid they'll put my life in danger if they drive. As I said, the drunks are bad enough.

I'm curious to know your reasoning why it should not be legalized. I saw alot of "eyerolling" in your post, but no rationale why you are so against it.

Pot Clubs are nothing new, by the way. They are all over Amsterdam. In the U.S. we have something even more ludicrious: clubs where people go and drink lots and lots of alcohol & get sloppy.....& then they drive home drunk!

I lurk at a mothering site where's a large group of women who smoke and eat marijuana on a daily basis. There's a whole board for them. I'm appalled that they have babies and small children to take care of while they're high on pot. They depend on their pot to get them through the stresses of motherhood.

But maybe I shouldn't be appalled and just try to stick to my "free to do what you want" mindset.
