Marie and Steve's 2007 Florida Holiday

Holidays have never been something that i have really done as an adult. As a child we would spend 2 weeks each summer at a caravan park (normally in Cornwall) swimming in the sea that was far too cold and eating crisp (and sand!) sandwiches.

The concept of "GASP" foreign holidays was always completely alien to me, it was not something i really even considered. I can hear the horrified whispers about the crazy lady who hates holidays and has sob seen nothing of the world, now!!!!!;) It really was just something that i thought other people did

Then i met my husband :love: . The man who has been just about everywhere you can think of. Even the really obscure places! I remember the story he told me of Ice-Skating followed by Ice Cream in Doha, Qatar and thought he was completely bonkers. :scared: :scared:

On his encouragement we started taking holidays abroad and i can now proudly say i have been abroad twice, once to Tunisia (which we will subtly gloss over, nice pool, lovely heat, a bit too scary for a first timer) and once to my now favourite place in the world, Florida!!! I can honestly say that it was one of the happiest times of my life :goodvibes :goodvibes (complete cliche i know but still!!) We spent two weeks of complete bliss in June of 2006 and i now have the bug. I have informed my husband (although he thinks he hasn't agreed! hee hee :rotfl2: :rotfl2: ) that we will have to go back every year or will simply have to move to Florida and marry Mickey!:lmao:

I suppose this is probably the right place to introduce us;

Me: :tinker: Marie or Alice (in my own little wonderland), Maurice (my little sister thinks this is a hilarous nickname!:lmao: ) or Puddin' (my husband thinks this is a great new name and started using it this week!) 27. Slightly (ok, a lot) talkative, excitable (like a child) and generally just daft. I love everything about Disney but am a sucker for Winnie the Pooh.

I'm the one in the middle

DH: :stitch2: Steve or "OH GREAT AND WISE GINGER ONE":lmao: :lmao: or Ginge for short. 27. Much quieter than i am but just as silly. Is happy as long as i am happy. Not keen on thrill rides. Laughed like a little child at Lilo and Stich.

I know it's not a disney picture but, i just love this one

A bit of backstory.

The need for good summer holiday has become more apparent in the last couple of years. DH is in the RAF and in 2005 we were posted to Northern Ireland. Usually this probably wouldn't be much of an issue but, this move was to be the first for me after leaving home and leaving home consisted moving into a married quarter about 10 minutes walk from my parents house. I was in pieces at the thought of moving so far away (i'm originally from Oxfordshire) but i got on with it and moved to Aldergrove in April 2005. There were alot of tears and the first few months were hard but now i love it:thumbsup2

It was then that i realised just how different life could be once you step outside your normal, comfortable existence. Before the move my life had just pottered around. There was no real excitement. Work was a way to get paid and i was socialising with friends that i had had for years (and still do have) in places i had been going to since i was a child.

I moved and then realised i needed a life!!! I made some great friends, ones i hope i won't lose when we are next posted. I found a great job ( i manage the office of a large recycling company) and started studying for a Business Studies degree at university at night. This meant that my quiet life was now jam packed and that by the summer i was shattered!!!

We decided to take a holiday in 2006 and to be honest, it hadn't occured to me to go to Florida. I wanted a beach, a sunlounger and a rest!!! My husband suggested Florida so i agreed and we went for it. We had a ball and even though we had a crazy two weeks and came home revitatised and ready for anything.:yay: We booked almost straight away to go back...............

Next: Hotels, ADR's and "Oh my gosh can i get anymore excited??"

Great start Marie. Looking forward to hearing more about it. By the way, we moved to Aldergrove in February 2005 and came back home to Wiltshire last August. I can't say I enjoyed it there at all but I do generally love the RAF life and get itchy feet if I stay in the same place longer than a couple of years. I will miss it when DH finishes in October :sad2:

Looking forward to hearing more of your story :)

I'm so jealous of your posting - we're waiting to find out whether we can move in August, we've already been extended 6 months and i'm going stir crazy!! I never expected to - i grew up at Brize Norton so i'm used to the RAF life (although my parents came out before i was born) but this is my first posting. I'm really starting to get itchy feet now. Hopefully my DH will entend to his 15 years so that we can do another 7 or so before he comes out. I expect we'll settle near a camp now - i can imagine being completely civilian!!

A lovely start Marie, I'm looking forward to reading your next insallment :surfweb:

What a promising introduction to your trip report. Hope we don't have to wait long for the journey's start.

Hi Marie, can't help noticing when your next trip is :cool1: , Yay we'll see you there:wave2: we arrive on the 31st May :yay:

You will have a great time on site.

Looking forward to reading more.

As i'm sure you can imagine, once i'd talked my DH into going back to Florida it took about 20 seconds before we started trying to decide where to stay.:lmao: We were straight in the car (although i'm sure DH would have happily waited a couple of weeks so that he didn't have to miss the football!!) and off to the travel agent for brochures.

The original plan was to go back to the hotel we stayed at in 2006. We had a wonderful time there and i was quite happy to stay there again. It hadn't even occured to me to stay in WDW. We didn't bank on the price rise of holidays from one year to the next and having had such a good price for the 2006 holiday, there was no way i was paying an extra £500 to stay in a glorified motel. Don't get me wrong, i don't have a bad thing to say about the hotel, i would recommend it infact but, it wasn't for us this year.

The decision was made then, Disney hotel here we come :banana:

Now, from reading these boards i get the impression that each resort has it's loyal followers, people who return year after year. :goodvibes. I "Shock!" "Horror!" don't know any of those people:eek: so we had to figure this one out for ourselves.

My first thought was The Grand Floridian.

"Yes i know we can't afford it but it was so beautiful when we went past it on the monorail last year - remember?" :laughing:

With that pushed firmly to one side thanks to DH, we started looking at Port Orleans and Carribean Beach. Both of them looked gorgeous and i was getting to the point where i just couldn't pick when i found Animal Kingdom Lodge. This resort looks to be the closest thing to heaven i could possible find - beautiful common areas, rooms, surroundings and need i even mention the animals?? I'm no Dr Dolittle but, i could just imagine waking up in the morning (of course looking beautiful, sun streaming in through the windows, perfectly rested:lmao: ) and sitting on the balcony watching the giraffes wander past the window. Can you honestly think of anything better??:goodvibes

I was hooked and we booked everything the next day. Here's how the booking panned out;

May 31st: Fly from Belfast International Airport to Gatwick (no direct flights this year) Stay at the Premier Inn over night

June 1st: Fly to Sanford, arrive approx. 2pm. Pick up hire car.

June 15th: Fly home, arrive 5am ish

June 16th: Fly back to Belfast from Gatwick.

Once the holiday was booked i had to immerse myself in all things Disney otherwise i was sure i might literally burst with excitement. I bought myself a whole stack of tourist books, all with the same information just slightly different wording and pictures and read them cover to cover. Then i decided to update my library of Disney DVD's. I watched them at every available opportunity and delighted at the little trailers the showed tiny glimpses of Main Street USA.:cloud9: :cloud9: I was on cloud nine. I had just returned from the best holiday i had ever had and i was getting to go again :goodvibes

It was due to this that i accidentally stumbled over the DIS - i would search the internet for AKL to try and get an idea of just how the hotel would be and what i could expect. It was here that i learned that there was more to Disney than just the parks and that there were some of the best restaurants on site and that they weren't just limited to guests at their particular resorts. I also didn't realise that you couldn't just pop downstairs for breakfast in the morning. It was here that i learned about ADR's.

I'm not a huge fan of planning in my personal life. I'm an Office Manager so i have to plan all day every day - not to mention my studies. Outside of that i try to just go with the flow. I will probably infuriate you by the end of this trip report by my distinct lack of planning. Having said that, i know exactly what i am going to do on my first day back to Orlando, right down to where we will eat.

I have failed to mention so far that it is my birthday whilst we are on holiday (Friday 8th June) Last year my birthday was lost a little in the general holiday merriment so this year my DH asked me to make sure we celebrated properly. So, to this end, my ADR's began to take shape.

We didn't want to make too many as there are alot places we enjoyed eating off property as well so i didn't want to restrict us. Here is the list we settled on;

04/06/07: Boma (Breakfast)
04/06/07: Artists Point (Dinner)
08/06/07: California Grill (Birthday Dinner)
10/06/07: Boma (Dinner)
14/06/07: Jiko (Dinner)

Along with the list of ADR's we have also come up with a wish list. It's quite long and doesn't just include Disney;

Lots of trips to SeaWorld.
Dinner at Bubba Gump Shrimp in City Walk (even if the foods rubbish we want to go for the theming)
Magic Kingdom: We went on my birthday last year but it was a ridiculously hot day so we didn't do much. So all the rides are on our list
Wishes, Spectromagic, Illumincations, Fantasmic.
Epcot - We ran out of time so i have never been
Star Wars Weekend at MGM
FOTLK and KS at Animal Kingdom. We want to spend alot of time here, just for the general lushiousness of the park
Airboat Ride
Helicopter around Orlando
Evening in Old Town Kissimee
Kennedy Space Centre
Touring some of the resorts (hopefully to pick for next year)

The list could go on and on so i will stop there

Sounds like a great trip. I'm getting excited right along with you - just wish we were going back this year.

Marie,

I can not wait for your holiday to arrive so we can hear all about it :goodvibes

Keep us posted with every amendment or addition, no matter how small while your planning:)

We started trying to plan our days this weekend.:eek:

As i mentioned earlier - i have an aversion to planning my holiday as i do it all day every day at work. We decided though that, as we have made ADR's for certain nights that we didn't want to take any chances. I also found out that The Haunted Mansion closes on 06/06/07 for renovations:scared1:

Important things for the holiday that affect the planning are:

ADR's scattered around the week
I want to see Wishes the way it is supposed to be seen before California Grill on 08/06/07
Star Wars weekend is better the first weekend we are there rather than the second.

How am i supposed to fit it all in?:confused3

I am also trying to think of something really good to do on my birthdayprincess: We're going to California Grill in the evening to watch Wishes :wizard: Does any one have any ideas
