Well, the 10-day forecast is in for the half. (Have to wait 'til Dec 29 for the full marathon forecast.)

Saturday, January 6, 2007: Partly cloudy, low 60, high 78. Sounds perfect for this cold-blooded gal, but I realize it may be a little warm for purists. http://www.weather.com/outlook/events/weddings/tenday/32830?from=36hr_topnav_wedding

Looks like I won't be needing all the layers I picked up at Goodwill this morning. Oh well. Warm is better, IMO.

Keep an eye on the weather as we get closer you still might want a layer or so. In Sept it was 55 at 5:00 am (Disneyland) and I was at the front of my corral with a breeze coming up my back (I was sitting with my back to the gate). I wish I had a toss away shirt then. I was shivering from the slight chill and nerves. I remember a couple of people nearby that had the ol' garbage bags over their race wear.

I've watching the weather.com forecasts too. I notice there is a chance of showers on Jan 5th. Has me a bit nervous  I think I'll enjoy the temps forecasted now but my running partner would prefer it colder.

By the way, Susan and I were wearing the same outfits (basically) in Sept and she was comfortable and I was shivering.

We still don't know what we're wearing for the race. Probably won't till next week and will just pack for every possiblity.

Here in MI i'm with you and can't wait for next weeks warmer temps :cool1:

See ya next week and if not have a great race!!!! If you see a lady with a Pal Mickey that is wearing the WISH lime green bracelet that will probably be me or at least another WISH racer LOL So be sure to say Hi :wave2: till then I'll be glued to weather.com

Yes, I agree. I was hoping it would not be as warm during the event. After that then let the warm time begin. I don't do well with the warmer events as I've had a chance to "taste" the difference I liked the slightly cooler temps last year compared with the year before where it was a warm t-shirt start.

I live in the beautiful sunshine state and I would definately agree with the electrolyte and potassium remark. Preparing for the 1/2 Marathon (first time) and my runs the last couple of weeks have been brutal because it has gotten so warm again. As a matter of fact, layed out by my pool today and got a sunburn. I live here and can't handle the heat. I was hoping for a little colder start to the race, but at least it will be dark part of the time !!! :cool1:

I will say if that forecasts sticks--do not be deceived...it will be plenty hot and they had to give out sponges on the backend of AK b/c it was sooo hot by the time you are sweatin' it at mile 19.

A good forecast would be starts in the 50s and finish in the high 60s, low 70s. And this from the Florida gal!

That forecast is a bit too warm and will throw many off--including those from colder regions.

We haven't had too many cold snaps (unusual) this year which is odd---so Floridians might be more accustomed to running at those temps. But it is a very very very warm forecast. Starting out in shorts and a singlet is too warm for a January event.

Watch your fluid intake and eat those bananas and oranges!

Well I am excited that the forecast is showing warm and dry conditions because I got the cutest pink running skirt from my mom and dad for Christmas! I have been hoping and praying it will be warm enough to wear it :D

I guess I will be carrying a "dry" pair of socks to change into at the halfway point and sunscreen. And an extra shot of deodorant.

my heart goes out to all of you doing the Full. I'll be praying extra hard for cooler temps for all but especially the Full.

I just repacked my race clothes to now wearing shorts. yikes!

We are already down here and the locals are all saying drizzle for next 2 days, but clear and warm by weekend. Pack your sunscreen team!

I just saw the temp predictions also. My wife and I are doing the Goofy and it will be tough late into the marathon! We are slower and will be in the full blaze of 84 degrees on Sunday!!!

Any ideas on how to deal with the humidity?

Most definately a tank top and shorts will help deal with the heat. We ran the Race for the Taste in October and kind of ironic the weather was almost exactly the same. HOWEVER that was a mere 10K not a marathon and 1/2!!

I live in Bradenton only 1 and 1/2 hours away and the forecast here is only high 75 both days this weekend, maybe that forecast will trickle over there. Big difference between 74 and 84 when you are running.

We did our last long training run last night after the sun went down and it was not so bad:confused3

I have great respect for those of you doing the full or the goofy, good luck to everyone!!:woohoo:

Be sure to start hydrating the DAY before your race---staying on top of your hydration needs is key!

If your wife has longer hair, she might find it useful to pour some water over her head before the race and then pull it back as the water will serve as a quasi coolant system for her. For both of you, a running cap might be useful in terms of blocking out the sun and providing a bit of shade. Running caps generally aren't expensive and are better than baseball caps since the latter tend to trap heat (the LAST thing that you want!)

If you're not accustomed to the heat, be sure to take on a comfortable pace---don't worry if it feels slower than usual.

Finally, this perhaps goes without saying, but be sure to drink as frequently as *necessary* and to take whatever electrolyte supplement you've been training with---whether it's Gatorade, Sport Beans etc.

Best of luck to you and your wife!

angietuck2,

Hi from Bradenton. I live in Mill Creek and do most of my training runs in Mill Creek, Grey Hawk Landing, along Rye Road and Upper Manatee River Road.

Almost all of my training runs were done after 9pm until Thanksgiving. Since then my Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday runs are at night and long weekend runs have been at 9am.

Where in Bradenton are you?

Good luck this weekend.

Chester

HELLO

We live in Cordova Lakes between 59th and 75th Street West and we pretty much run all over and I'm glad to hear we are not the only ones running late evening (for me it was because of the heat) We did start doing our long runs down Manatee Avenue out the causeway to the beach which made it better and helped take my mind off the the 10 to 13 miles to go.

My husband and I just started running together this summer and did the 10K as I said before, when we came home from that on Oct 9 was when we decided to do the 1/2 - so this is all new to me. But I am so excited:banana:

Good luck to you too!!!

As far as the humidity goes, one trick I use when out in it is to carry a DRY washcloth with me. I will occassionaly moisten it and wipe my face/arms off with it. It has a great cooling effect (at least for me) & helps with the lack of sweat evaporation that can occur. If you don't get rid of your sweat, either by wiping or eveaporation, your body can't cool itself effectively.

Defnitely do NOT do the "pour water over yourself" thing. If it is really humid, the water stuck in your clothes can actually serve to trap your body heat & prevent effective cooling. Even in the cold temperatures of last year, i had to deal with a couple of people in the latter stages of the Marathon that had this occur.

Drink electrolytes, but it is probably better to drink 1/2 water + 1/2 powerade. Powerade/Gatorade by itself has LOTS of sugar in it.

Have fun & be Safe!! If you are not used to the conditions, remember it's better to finish at a slower pace than to not finish at all!!

Totally agree with the above if you're wearing cotton. JimB is absolutely right that cotton will absorb sweat, causing your clothes to cling to your skin and resulting in much unwanted heat buildup. I should have clarified my last comment about pouring water over yourself: Since much of the heat that you can lose goes out via the top of your head, pouring water over your head will actually have a cooling effect. Moreover, from what I understand, if you regularly drop a bit of water on a light, polypro singlet, this too will also help keep you cooler....at least according to Jeff Galloway's "From Marathon you can do it." But yes, do not pour water if you're wearing cotton---yuck! Good luck, everybody! I'm still hoping for a fluke cold front....my hopes are dying quickly.... :)

You should NEVER wear cotton..but I digress! If you are wearing wicking material--the water will be very relieivng.

If you are planning to wear cotton--you will be wearing a dead weight by the end of the race...it will be so drenched with sweat.....and be even worse with the temps this weekend.

***Advice of my coaches who have been doing marathons for years and what they tell all of the people they train (probably well over 500-1000 by now) and what we do on training days.
