Marathon weekend roving reporter live trip report

OK, I'm back home in snowy Rochester, NY. I have some final pictures to post from yesterday. Sunday, I had one final thing I wanted to do before I left the World. I didn't have any park tickets for this weekend, but there was still one thing I needed to do.

I headed to the Polynesian, and made a beeline to here...

Perfect ending!! Bawb would have been proud!!

Well Done on finishing! :goodvibes

OK, I can't believe I'm sharing this, but it's early. I may edit the post out. Alicia, this is what got me running again. My daughter (now DD7 pooh:) took this picture of me when we were on vacation in the Finger Lakes in July 2005.

I couldn't stand it. My weight had increased to over 200 lbs. I had always considered myself a pretty active person. My first daughter was born in 1998, and we moved to Vermont and got a new job at Middlebury College in 1999. My running and exercising just stopped. I saw that picture in 2005 and thought, I need to take better care of myself.

We went to Disney over Labor Day weekend 2005 (first ever Free Dining :thumbsup2), and that's when I really got bitten by the Disney bug. I discovered the DIS when planning that trip. After we got back, I continued surfing on the DIS, but I didn't really have a reason too since we had no plans on coming back. Eventually I thought, "why am I sitting here surfing the internet? If I have time for that, I have time to exercise."

Here's the post I made January 23, 2006

I received a reply from Tiger Lily 03 (a moderator on the WISH boards) 20 minutes later welcoming me to the WISH team, and I've been exercising ever since. Thanks to their support.

OK, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it. I need another cup of coffee.

Also, thats a pretty inspirational story. I wish that would work for me, but I've really learnt to dislike running myself. WiiFit is the closest to exercise as I get, if you can call it that. Although, when the weathers better in Portsmouth, walks down the seafront could be a better option.

Congrats on your excellent adventure and finishing the Half. Good way to finish up the trip ... with a Dole Whip. Based on the early picture of what you left behind in NY ... my guess is you didn't go home with those shorts on!!

Again, great job!

Bill

Dave, congrats on finishing the half. :thumbsup2 How wonderful of you to share your story. The medal is so cute! :goodvibes

Just curious if you don't mind...:upsidedow
  • how long does it take to walk from the Dolphin to Epcot?
  • how long to MGM/DHS?
  • what time did the Hoop de Doo finish? I'm thinking of doing it before the Podcast Poly meet; also wasn't sure how long I'd need to get from it to the Poly...any idea?

cheers,
:flower3:
Hmmmm, I'll try to answer what I can.

I never walked from the Dolphin to Epcot. I wish I had a park ticket because it would have been so much easier to walk through EPCOT after the race to go back to my hotel. My guess is it would be a 15-20 min walk.

It's about a 10 min walk from the Swan to Hollywood Studios, and the boat takes 7 min.

I went to the 5:00p Hoop Dee Doo show and it was over at 6:40p. How long it takes you to get to the Poly depends on whether you are relying on Disney transportation or not. Even if you have a rental car, you have to get from Pioneer Hall to the front of Fort Wilderness using the Disney bus in order to get to your car. I would figure on a minimum of 30 minutes to get from Hoop Dee Doo to the Poly.

No sir, I had jeans and a sweatshirt in a bag I carried with me, and I put them on in the airport bathroom before getting on the plane. I went from near 80 degree whether to 20 degree and tons of snow.

Thx a mint for the reply & info :goodvibes

I thought your toast to Bawb Dole Whip ending was perfect! :thumbsup2

cheers,
:flower3:

So Dave, any thoughts on running the full marathon? I'm thinking about it for 2011 (going to try to run one here in CT this year, Hartford Marathon in Oct) but we'll see. Would LOVE to run the Goofy one of these days.

BTW - Love the pic you have in your sig running out of the castle! Just saw the one they took of me over the weekend and it was dark and horrible! ha!

Congratulations!

Hi Chris, I ran the full marathon in 2007, and loved it. The pic in my siggy is actually from the full marathon in 2007. In all honesty, I like the course of the full a lot better than the half. Running through all 4 parks is fantastic, and you get to run a lot further through EPCOT.

I just saw my official pictures from the half as well, and my pictures in MK are really dark too. I didn't remember it was still so dark at that point, but I guess I was "in the zone".

Hey Dave. Just read your report and loved it. We were at Hoop De Doo Saturday. I was Miiiiike that Miss Dolly paid attention to. Toot toot. Loved the meal after the half. My first half. My first time at Hoop. Just a wonderful day at the World. Thanks for the report!

Mike, yeah, I remember you with the toot toot at Hoop Dee Doo. I was sitting maybe two tables behind you. I was by myself sitting with my DIS Unplugged shirt on. That was a fun evening, and I pigged out after the half.

Way to go, Dave! Great race and great report! So sorry to have missed you!

Excellent, I might be tapping into your vast running knowledge, especially where the full marathon is concerned. I'd love to do the full down there next year, but have to be home Monday for an MBA program I'm in :-( Hoping to run the full 2011 though. Who knows...I might need new knees by then! :rotfl:

Thanks again!

Yeah, the Sunday races are tough when you have to be back to work on Monday, but it can be done. I know lots of people that do it. They start soooooo early that you can finish the race and still catch a plane home.

Great report. I'll better try this sometime. It looks that racing is a very fulfilling activity, right?:) I'm glad you had a great time.

Have a nice day. :)
