The website says a 15 minute mile pace...is this enforced like it is for the 1/2 and full?

Starts at 7 am in Animal Kingdom. Will early shuttles be running from Pop, do you suppose?

Is there a medal???

For the 1/2, where are the sweep check points? How many people do you suppose actually get swept? 5? 30? 400?

If you get swept, you get taken to the finish line, right? And do I understand that you still get a medal but it's different than what the finishers get?

I'm feeling myself chickening out on the 1/2...just don't think I'll be able to make the pace. So, thinking about doing the 5k on Friday and then giving the 1/2 my best shot with the knowledge that I probably won't finish. What's our WISH shirt say? ...trumps DNS!

Any other info on the 5k? I know it's in Animal Kingdom. Pretty flat terrain??

Thanks!

There is a "medal" for the 5K. The 15 min/mile requirement is only for the 5K as the 1/2 has a 16 min mile pace requirement.

I have heard if you get swept, you get the medal without the year"dangle".

FL is flat and so is AK. The only hills in FL is Everest, which you don't have to run up:)

Do the 1/2 and you will be happy for the attempt and finish:)

but don't go into the races thinking 'hey i'll still get a medal even if i get swept'

1st you must always think positively! :thumbsup2 Picture that finish line and working towards it. Train well Grasshoppa! LOL

But I did get swept in 2005 and while we were approaching the sweep point I heard we'd still get medals. We get on the bus the driver had no clue to if there were medals or not for non-finishers. He directed us to the Info booth when we finally arrived there. We went searching for the Info booth and they checked high and low for someone to answer our question and finally pointed us to a supposed 'official race' person who we had to track down over by the Full Marathon finish line. When I asked him if we were suppose to receive medals all I got for our efforts was a look down his nose and a No. Turn of back in dismissal. Grrrr.

I heard those that were swept at the MK in 2005 did get them but there too was a bit of a confusion. Disney says they didn't close the MK too early and others do. That might be the reason why they received them. Sadly I don't know if the others on my bus were any more successful but I doubt it.

I do wonder had we found our way to the 1/2 Marathon finish if things would have been different. But 2005 was the last year the 2 races were run together and our Sweeping Bus took us back to the Full Marathon.

Train well, follow the training schedule you have set. And know that there will be something out there on course to motivate you..... US! :dance3: There will be WISH members along both course on it and along side it. Same with the 5Ks well at least we'll be in it, not sure how the cheering works for the 5Ks but we'll be there, somewhere :thumbsup2

Ok my 15 miles are calling  rather go back to bed LOL

I emailed Disney through the WWoS website, and they responded saying:

Thank you for contacting Disney Sports Travel. There will be
transportation provided to/from the marathon events, including the expo,
to all Disney owned and operated resorts.

So, yes, they will have buses to transport you to the park, expo, etc.

I was wondering the same thing about the timed event. If it's about 3 miles I expect they want everyone done in 45 minutes? I have a friend who was going to do it with me, but she's now 7 wks pregnant and I'm just not sure how well she'll do in January, I don't think she'll be able to finish in time. She's going to still try to walk it. Do you see many pregnant people in the race? I think I'd worry about being pushed over....

We had both had the goal of running it but now she's decided she'll walk. So I'm going to start training on my own to run it by myself. I'm sure it'll be a combination run/walk!!

I read online that if you get swept, there are no medals.

We did it in 2006 and finished in 54 minutes or so and we weren't the last ones. They are a little more forgiving on this race but I am sure there is a limit to what they will allow. We did see abunch of young kids, pregnant people, and strollers on the course. I was carrying DS in a backpack for most of it and let him run across the finish line to greet Pluto and get his medal.

Did they use chip timing? I know the DL 5K didn't.

No they don't use timing chips. However they do have a clock that is running. We found out the time by looking at the pictures afterwards and guessed from there.

Wow, didn't know people were allowed to bring strollers!

They aren't supposed to use strollers but there were people using them and they weren't being stopped. You can't be sure that they will allow them or if they will stop you.

I'm in the same boat as you! I'm soooo nervous about the 1/2.
I'm doing the 5k and will do my best on the 1/2 and if I get swept,
then atleast I tried! Are you running/walking with anyone?
I'm doing a walk/jog for both and probably will be just at the 15min.
pace. I'm really short, so just a fast walk won't cut it for time.
Keep working on it and do you best and that's all you can ask for:goodvibes

As I mentioned before, the 1/2 has only a 16 min pace requirement. If you are at 15 min pace, you will be fine. There is still 3 months before the race and the real training is just begining.

See you all in Jan!

You will make it! Keep thinking it. Your emotions will kick in and as long as you do your best, be proud!

That 15 minute pace is perfect for a photo op or 2. Enjoy the training. The posting on the weekly thread helps to keep the excitement and all going so when the big day arrives, you will have a fantastic journey.

16 min pace is all it takes, but do your best to work at it a little quicker. I'll see everyone at the back of the pack! It is where all the fun is!

Ok so after the controversey I created asking about the 1/2 and charities I think I might not end up being ready for a 1/2 by then and may be better off doing the 5k. The course looks interesting and its still open for registration - therefore saving me lots of money and frustration over trying to register for the 1/2 in the other ways available.

If I wanted to volunteer for a water stop or whatever for the 1/2 what do I need to do? I know some of you have done that before.

Tricia

You go to disney world sports web site and look for sports enthusiasts link on left side then pick event you want to volunteer for. If you are going to volunteer for 1/2 do it soon, the pick of shifts was slim last time I checked -- I was going to volunteer until DH decided to do 1/2 so me and DS's will be cheering for him now. And while i'm on the subject, I know this is wrong thread but I just got done reading the other thread (about charities & Anthony Travel) and i found it all quite interesting.

This will be our 3rd race for AT Children's Project and to be perfectly honest we only signed up with them for last years 1/2 because we wanted to run. Well we raised the money for them and then met the kids we raised the money for, and fell in love. I ran the MINNIE for them and now DH is running 1/2 again this year and our 11 year old is raising money for them too.

All that being said we have booked through Anthony Travel twice, MINNIE and this year's RFTT (hotel only) and everything was wonderful. As a matter of fact this year it was going to be Anthony Travel or AT, but our heart is still with AT.

DH and DS did sign up for 5K through Disney web-site however, just this past week and it's 80% full so if you are going that route I would do it soon.

Sorry for the lengthy post but I hope this helps you out.
