Marathon Weekend 2026

SAFD: Rather than do overall favorite, I’ll do it this way….

Classic Disney (pre-80’s): Going with Mary Poppins. Thought about Snow White, but MP just gave more ringers.

Refreshed Disney of my kids’ childhood (1989-2005): Tough one. Little Mermaid (and Under the Sea, specifically) was a favorite on car rides, but I have always felt that Beauty and the Beast has such a Broadway score feel to it—the opening number Belle, in particular— that I have to with that.

Modern Disney: Moana and Encanto. This will have to remain a tie. Encanto has not only the uptempo and humorous, but also Dos Oruguitas leaves me on the verge of tears. Moana has great eclectic score and You’re Welcome is something that seeps into every day use. So Lin-Manuel et al for the win.

SAFD: So I am going to go a little untraditional route, but hopefully some understand where I am coming from with my top choice.

1) High School Musical trilogy - my kids watched these movies so many times growing up. Not afraid to admit that we used to rock out to the soundtrack in the car many of days. One of my co-workers, who was in a similar situation, were known to drop a line or two from songs in the office. LOL.

2) Bedknobs and Broomsticks - This is a nostalgia pick from me. I used to watch this movie a bunch growing up. The scene/song at the end where all the armor came to life used to mesmerize me when I was little.

3) Aladdin - traditional pick here. Never Had a Friend Like Me is one of my all time favorite songs from a Disney animated movie.

thinking of these posts about favorite soundtracks, I put on Soul (just the instrumentals) for our run this morning and it made for a very relaxed, easy paced hour run. I feel like it made my heart go slower somehow. Sometimes certain music tends to make me run too fast, but this allowed me to lock into a nice pace. Epiphany has to be one of my favorite pieces of music.

I spent the whole of last Monday morning wandering around Notting Hill, and as soon as I got to Portobello Rd, I started humming…..”Portobello Rd, Portobello Rd, street where the riches of ages are stowed…..”

SAFD:

1. Encanto. Like someone said earlier this is a relatively new addition to Disney musical canon, but every song has earworm potential. I'm completely jealous of Lin-Manuel's musical talents. If you listen closely you can catch shades of Hamilton in the way the songs are constructed.
2. Cars. Not a common one I know but this was my son's favorite movie when he was little and it was on constant replay in our house. He's now almost grown and probably hasn't thought of Lightning McQueen in years, but I wistfully remember his toddler self jamming in the living room to the opening song, Sheryl Crow's "Real Gone." Will always have a special place in my heart.
3. This is tough because there are many that are good, but I will go with Aladdin. Robin Williams' performance of "Friend Like Me" is still the quintessential version in my mind. A tour de force.

Guilty. I took Marta to run the Georgia Marathon a few years back. I put in a $20 to buy my ticket, and didn't even think about the change. I got $16 in $1 Sacajawea coins back, and got to jingle my way through 26.2 miles of hills. I was driving myself nuts. I'm lucky nobody beat me down at a water stop.
OMG, yes. I'd forgotten about MARTA and their $1 coin change. First time I had that happen (similarly receiving a huge pile of coins) it was like a LV slot machine had paid off

SAFD. My fab Pixar movies for songs. Gads. Um, how about:
1. Lion King
2. Little Mermaid
3. Beauty and the Beast

I know right? I've been anxiously waiting for the medals since last week! Let's gooooooo!
I’ve been anxiously waiting for a few weeks now! I thought for sure it would be today. :( Now with next week being Labor Day on Monday and Halloween Half Weekend, it might not come until after that. :( Not a huge deal, but last year they did them in August so I was so hoping we’d see them soon!

It’s been an August reveal going back to 2023. 2022 was revealed in early September but that could be chalked up to being the first MW back after covid.

When I went to Portobello Road, I was SO disappointed 🤣. I knew perfectly well soundstages were used for the movie, and I was still let down.

Good morning RunDisney All-Stars! Welcome to this week's edition of Sundays are for Disney (SAFD). Last week's question was about staying entertained on the run and a lot of folks listen to music as their option of choice. It just so happens that Disney has a couple of movies featuring some relatively popular music, so let's keep with the music theme. What are your top 3 Disney movies (Pixar counts) from a musical standpoint?

SAFD: My first two positions are easy, but then it gets hard to choose simply because there are so many good choices.
  1. Nightmare Before Christmas. What can I say, I love this movie and it's loaded with great songs from top to bottom. "This Is Halloween" and this is far and away my favorite musical movie. It's not from the movie itself, but I particularly enjoy Marilyn Manson's version of that iconic song.
  2. Moana. From "We Know the Way" to "Shiny" to The Rock singing "You're Welcome", nobody knows "How Far I'll Go" just to rewatch this movie so I can listen to its soundtrack.
  3. Hercules. This spot was tough, but there's enough here to just edge out the competition. From the Muses to Meg to Hercules himself, the soundtrack pulls this movie from relative obscurity. A "Zero the Hero" situation, if you will.
1. The Lion King. IMO the greatest movie intro ever. The remainder of the movie is ok, but the first few minutes are FIRE!!!!!!!!!!
2. CoCo
3. The Little Mermaid

SAFD: I hate this question. I love the music from Disney movies, and having to pick a top 3 seems like unusual cruelty. I think if I had to pick right now it would be Tarzan, Hercules, and The Little Mermaid. Will my answer be different tomorrow? Or even this afternoon? Probably.

For anyone who has signed up for the Dopey, started training, but is wondering how the weekend will go, I've posted some videos. Definitely low tech, and much of the information has been shared in the past, but I had some time and put my thoughts down on video. It is in several parts, and I need to finish up the last part and get it posted later today. Hopefully it is of use to someone.
