Marathon Weekend 2017!

Yes, it seems several of the TIT runners are doing it now. I will likely be doing the same tomorrow morning. I'm active duty and this likely my only shot at for years so I'm doing it once the rain lets up.

Wow - I actually got a phone call to my room (on property) reading the cancellation message.

They keep saying compensation for half and kids runners...I was so sure there would be options for Dopey and Goofy runners but I'm starting to wonder...

I don't know exactly how it was said, but Dopey and Goofy runners are also half runners, and registered for the half by way of the Dopey and Goofy Challenges... :confused3

I'm just hoping. I haven't received a call/message yet.

Not much to add, just shock they pulled the cord so early and saddened by the whole thing. The half was the only race I was actually going to go out to race, was actually eying an age group award :(
At this point my wife and I are going to give the half a go here at Saratoga...you can link up SSR and Old Key West through LBV Golf Course and the out and back is around 10K, so two loops and we get our mileage in. Better than dizzy loops at least...

Disappointment.

I fully believe that every person should return home safely to their loved ones. Full safety, for runners and volunteers. I support the decision made by runDisney to protect everyone. I applaud their decision to facilitate some type of refund.

At the same time, I will own a medal from the 2015 W&D that was not earned and now I'm going to own a medal from the 2017 WDW Half that was not earned. These are the only two runDisney events I've ever attempted. Next weekend I'm registered to run the Star Wars Light Side. Was trying to do the coast to coast challenge. Now, I'm not entirely sure I want to. I've only done 3 other races in my life (all 5k's). I haven't felt that rush of crossing the finish line for a half yet. Part of me wants to do it, just to say I did it. Another part says, why bother. The thrill of completing two half marathons on back-to-back weekends, pulling off the Coast-to-Coast challenge, and doing at the place I love at the same time, is gone.

I can save a ton of cash, by not attending next weekend and only be out my registration fee. Really thinking about cutting my losses and just taking the healthy habit of running that I have developed over the last 2 years, home with me.

I admirer the runners that have completed their races, and I'm in awe of those that will do the full to complete their challenges.

Good luck everyone. And stay safe.

My unsolicited advice: I understand the frustration and disappointment that you are feeling right now. Please don't make a decision on what you're going to do while this is fresh. Give it a couple of days. You say you haven't felt the rush of crossing the finish line for a half yet. Don't let this weekend cheat you of the opportunity to feel that next weekend!

The first half you complete will always have a special place in your heart and memory. You've still got the opportunity to do that at a great Disney locale. The Coast 2 Coast medal may not have as much meaning given this weekend's events, but nothing will taint the feeling for the Light Side Half that you complete in its own right. Good luck whatever you decide!

As someone mentioned either earlier here or on another thread, the medal is partially for starting the race, but also for training. Think of all the miles that you have accomplished getting ready for this. That is what your medals are also standing for.

Be proud of your Wine and Dine medal and your Donald medal as symbols of your commitment to training and being ready for them. You just have fun stories paired with it. Then go earn your Star Wars medal for real in Disneyland next weekend and get that feeling of running past the finish line. You owe it to yourself and to your training.

Just talked to the concierge at the Boardwalk. Challenge runners WILL get some sort of refund and we have to go to the expo for medals, etc after 11. I'm considering waiting until later in the day to take care of this...

He apologized multiple times, which was nice but obviously not necessary.
The emotional part of me really wants to run something as a replacement in the morning. The rational side of me says let your knee rest so you can give a better effort in the full on Sunday.
After 2 back spasms today I think the universe is telling me to chill for the day.

I totally understand why some people want to run. I applaud that, but for me running at Disney is about the atmosphere, the parks, the character photos and less about the miles, so I'm content to accept the disappointment and find another way to enjoy my day. Best wishes for good and safe runs for those who choose to run their 13.1 anyway!

.

Good to know. I'm dreading going to the expo to get the medal though. It's going to be a zoo and full of a lot of pissed off people. :(

I was just thinking the same thing. Medals + merchandise returns + people getting their refunds. I'm trying to decide if I want to go really early or wait until 4 or something.
