Marathon Weekend 2017!

I agree, and I am not a medal guy. Only at WDW do I wear my medal after leaving the race area, and I think that it is because it makes me feel like I am part of something bigger than myself. I will only wear my medal for a day or two after the races, but that is mostly because they are so HEAVY. I love my pictures in the parks with family, friends, characters and even strangers while wearing our medals.
Same with me. I just did a local race this past weekend and was surprised to see other runners wearing their medals later in the morning when my husband and I were out to breakfast (I was wearing the race shirt but not the medal while facing some eggs).

Yep, everyone has covered the questions, but for sure, especially at Disney, wear those medals!! I dont think I would other places, but there, it just adds to the fun that day and the day or 2 after.. The CM's, characters, general public etc all really do support / congratulate you!

Ugh! Just found out that I have a torn rotator cuff and will need surgery on 5/31. So much for staying healthy leading up to marathon weekend.
I'm only a 1/2 marathoner, but the thought of not running for 3+ months and then starting all over again in the fall is discouraging to me. Not to mention being in a sling for half the summer. I'm going to get moving as soon as I can and probably will have to resort to the recumbent bike for starters, suck it up and be patient until I'm healed. Sorry, for the "poor me" post but know the folks on this thread will help with any advice they have!

That stinks :( just take the time off and heal up, you'll be fine once you get back into it. You don't want to push it and wind up setting yourself back more time! Good luck with the surgery and may you heal fast!

That sucks. I hope surgery goes well and that you'll be back and better in no time.

That stinks! Hope recovery goes well. Don't worry too much though because you'll lose some fitness but you'll have enough time prior to marathon weekend to gain a great deal of that fitness back. Just take it easy now.

I'm so sorry - hang in there! FWIW I tore mine 20ish years ago, but didn't seek medical attention (because young, poor, no insurance); I just lived with the reduced mobility and daily pain for a long time. PT and yoga has helped increase mobility and no more daily pain, but it's still a problem and if I stretch too far or use it too much, I get flare-ups. So know that you're doing the right thing and the time off will be worth it to avoid chronic issues down the road!

Well running my first marathon. Beyond excited. Started training using the recommended disney training program. NEED ADVICE FROM VETERANS!
1.Nutrition
2. Apparel for running in the race (looking at just using one of my gym shorts and getting a new under armor sweat wicking shirt)
3. List of things to do race weekend besides finding my way to Wide World of Sports to get stuff.
4. Anything worth mentioning/seeing/doing (and YES i do plan on going through the parks after the race) Im more concerned what to do before the race or just go to the expo at WWOS.

Thanks again guys talk to you soon!
First marathon - congrats!!! The 2016 Disney Marathon was my first (at age 51!!! talked into it by my fitness freak daughter - and I beat her!!!) - 2017 will be my 2nd.

2 pieces of advice (on top of what everyone else has posted):
1. Long runs in your training are key - they build your confidence that you can complete the 26.2 miles, and they very clearly point out what NOT to do/eat/wear.
2. Proof of time in a 10 miler/half/full not only gets you in an early corral, but more importantly frees up precious time for you to get character pictures, ride Everest (do that!), run the bonus cone (bonus-coners do it longer!), greet spectators, grab a frozen margarita in the Mexico pavilion, etc. You've put in the pain during the training, and by definition you're setting a PR, so relax a bit and enjoy all of the Marathon miles!

Goodness, that sucks. OTOH, challenge yourself and sign up for the full (if you can do the half you can do the full!) and make 2016/2017 a year of triumph over adversity! Sounds corny, but finish both after what you've been through and you'll always have that as motivation for whatever life throws your way.

I read where folks mentioned having a beer or Margarita the last few miles in World Showcase. Is it open prior to 11:00 during the marathon? or is that only happening after the 11:00 mark..
:)

Who told you that you couldn't run for 3+ months? I had surgery on both shoulders back in 2012. I had a partially torn rotator cuff and labrum. I couldn't lift stuff, or play catch or anything like that for a few months but after a couple of weeks there was no reason I couldn't run. Maybe because of the severity of the tear?

It's due to the severity of the tear and thinning of my rotator cuff. My doctor told me I can't start PT for 3 weeks post-op and would be in a sling for 6 weeks.

Have you considered a stationary bike? That should allow you to at least keep your legs moving and retain some level of aerobic fitness.

Yes, I have access to those and recumbent bikes at the gym I belong to. Not really my thing, but as you mention at least it will keep my legs moving and heart pumping. I also have to practice being a lefty!

There were times when I was just bored to death with treadmill running lol.. So towards the end of training on the long run back to back weekend I would mix it up.. Some I would do on the treadmill, some I would do on the inside track, some I would do on the recumbent bikes, just to mix it up.. When I did the bike, I did up the work a little bit since I wasnt carrying all my weight.. Like you say, it still keep the legs moving and can keep the heart rate up!!

Woohoo.. flights booked for the trip down in January!!! Only non stops they had were leaving at 6am or 4pm... Man that's going to be an early day.. And being in January, dont even want to chance a layover in baltimore, or anywhere really..

when are people planning on being in Disney for the race weekend , the wife and I were thinking to head January 1st or 2nd, we are coming from Canada , would it make sense to head down on December 31? anyone from Canada experience flying on new years eve or day ?

We will go down tuesday.. that will allow one day in case of a weather delay from ohio. Was going to go down on Wednesday, but for ME that's just too fast.. Get there, get settled, get to expo, get packet, get ready for 1st race of 4... I need that extra day lol
