Marathon Weekend 2016

Slightly hijacking this discussion, please don't come to a crashing walk in just one step. That's a good way to get into a collision with a runner behind you. A better way is to put your hand up to indicate you're going to be walking, look around you to make sure it's clear to do so and there's no one right behind you, and then gradually slow to a walk while making your way to the side of the road. Most runners will be attuned to the hand up walking signal, but looking around before slowing down is good practice to ensure no one gets hurt.

been looking at the extended weather forecast every few days for Orlando. Looks to be quite a bit warmer than what I'm dealing with now in central TX, so that's a plus. Also, looks like rain doesn't come into the picture until the marathon itself.

Which site are you looking at?

My parents bought my husband the ChEAR package. He's done the past two rD races with me and his response was essentially ...

"So, I can sit in a grandstand where you can't see me, listen to them butcher your name when you cross the finish line and then wait 45 minutes for you to get through that whole thing? Nah. That doesn't work for me."

I think his plan is to ultimately be at mile 24 and then he'll find me after the mayhem. That probably works the best.

OMG. I can't believe this is about to happen.

I can't believe I'm about to attempt this.

I'm going to freak out now.

Deep breaths. The races are the victory lap of your training.

Well said!! Would also add that when transitioning back to a run pace, I find it easier to sort of glide back into the pace - I sort of bend my knees a bit more and just move my feet faster to blend into the run.I know this sounds really dorky.... I don't know how else to explain it., but when I'm really tired it so much less jarring than just stepping right into the run pace and it feels easier on my joints.

Thank you!!!!!

I have tried time and time again to instill this concept in my mother but she is being the epitome of "can't teach an old dog new tricks." Doesn't help she tries to run on the left side of the path too, then crosses in front of me to stop and I almost crash into her. She then gets upset with me for not paying attention, and I should've realized she was starting to walk. So my apoligies to anyone who does the 10k and hears me frequently letting out a frustrated groan as I run into her once again.... Or if anyone falls victim to her. I have tried... I really have...

Do you guys think I should start rotating in the new shoes so that I have two pairs of shoes for marathon weekend (and can wear different shoes for my two races)? Or should I stick with the pair I'm currently wearing and not think about the new shoes until after January?
Neither pair of shoes matches my costumes, so color is not a factor.
Opinions?

(In case you guys forgot, I'm doing the 5K & 10K, and that's the end of my marathon weekend running)

I would say start rotating now.
I agree - start rotating the new ones in now and then wear whichever pair feels best for your races. Even if you decide the older pair is your race shoe, rotating now will reduce their total mileage some. That's exactly what I'm doing now, actually - my new pair doesn't feel perfect for my longest runs yet, but rotating them in now for shorter runs is keeping some miles off my older pair, which is at that perfectly comfortable point.

I have told my husband that he needs to be somewhere along the stretch from Mile 23-24, and I would prefer it would be just him because I'm probably going to lose it at that point.
I cheered at the Yacht Club this year and it was a GREAT location! Anywhere along the Boardwalk, or the path between DHS and the Boardwalk, is good, really.

The first place they can see you is at the TTC on your way up to Magic Kingdom. It's not as exciting as Main Street, but it's a little less crowded which makes it easier for them to spot you and you to spot them. From there, they can walk over to Poly and GF to see you again as you leave MK and get ready to turn to Animal Kingdom. After that, they can head to BW/BC/YC to see you at mile 24 before they walk through Epcot to see you after the finish. If they want to stick with the packages, they'll be able to see you cross the finish line, but there won't be much opportunity to kiss and run at that point.
:thumbsup2 Exactly what I'd suggest, too!

Um... Floridian here. Our forecast just changed drastically over the span of 3 hours. Anything looking at marathon weekend is completely useless this far out lol!
I'm not feeling any pain when I walk so do you think it would be worth walk/run my practise in two weeks time or not? I don't usually take walking breaks but if it will help with my fitness (instead of not being able to complete it altogether) then I'm all for it!
So, I deal with chronic ITB problems due to scoliosis: it's a constant battle, and not the normal ITBS most runners deal with, but I feel like the years of dealing with it have brought me some wisdom, lol! Walk breaks may help - but only if you do them in training, too, and if your walking gait is one that doesn't tax the muscles surrounding and supporting the ITB. Walking uses different muscle groups in different ways than running, so if you've never trained using walk breaks and then do them on race day, you could be in for some serious pain in other spots. For me, with my particular issues, taking too-frequent walk breaks can actually make my ITB tightness worse - but I only know that, and what the "right" frequency is, form trial and error. So I say give the walk breaks a try now, while still training, and see how you feel. Also worth noting, I wear an ITB strap to help delay the onset of the ITBS knee pain. It doesn't help at all once pain has set in, but does seem to keep it at bay when used proactively.

Also also ... STOP LOOKING AT THE WEATHER! Have we not learned anything from the Wine & Dine thread people????

LOL! I feel that I don't even want to look at a forecast after that but I'm sure once we are 15 days out I will start stalking all the sites. ;)

This talk of shoes comes at a time when I've been a bit confused myself. I've been wearing my running shoes since late Sept/early Oct and I like them, but I also feel like it may be time for a new pair. I couldn't find the same ones when I went shopping last weekend. Now I'm concerned if I change anything will it be bad, or would it be worse to run in shoes that are too old but I know I like?

So good news for me! My parents are coming and can watch the kids, which means my husband can cheer for me for the 10K and I for him for the half. Will it be hard for him to find me after the 10K? Will I be able to go with him to Epcot and then go to MK to see him on main st and then make it back for the end of the race? He runs about a 9 minute mile. How do I sign up for runner tracking? I'm really nervous about messing this all up!

Since we're talking shoes, I've got an opinion question:

I have about 225 miles on my current pair of Saucony Guide 8s. If I continue to use them for every run from now until marathon weekend, they'll be somewhere between 275 and 300 miles.
I bought another pair of the Guide 8s on sale last week, and they arrived today.

As many others have said, start rotating them in now. The more options you have for shoes for a race the better.

My wife has run the past two 10Ks at marathon weekend and I've found her very easily at both the finished line and after at the meet-up area.

Tracking sign ups will happen about a week or two (someone correct me if I'm wrong) before the race. Keep looking on rundisney.com under "Runner Tracking" or you can sign up at the expo.

10k question
The 10k has historically been a smaller race. It shouldn't be that hard to find each other after the race. Will you have a phone so you can text each other? If he knows about what time your finishing it should be pretty easy for him to wait for you on the other side of the bag check area. You could pick a spot to meet up. If you are checking a bag have him meet you at your bag check area.

Half Question.
Making it from Epcot - MK is easy. Making it from Main Street to Epcot will be tight and you could potentially miss him at the finish. If you saw him at the TTC it would be much easier to make it back in time to see him at the finish. I think you need to decide what's more important. (Seeing him twice or seeing him on mainstreet) If you are going to see him on mainstreet go to the end on the tomorrowland side. You can take pics of him running down mainstreet and once he gets ready to turn into tomorrowland pics of him in front of the castle.

don't worry you'll be fine.

So my ankle feels a lot better today, but I think I will keep on icing and see how I am this weekend. Having to dress like a girl for a Christmas party tonight probably won't help. LOL

Haha, OK I didn't completely walk it. I tried to murder my knees and ran don every hill they had to offer and walked everything else. And I abided by my mile 1 rule: No walking the first mile. But yes, this was for the Nike Women's Half.. I've done it every year since 2012. This year's "perks" left a lot to be desired so who knows what 2016 will end up being- but our Student won't be in classes any longer at that point so we'll see if we even get it anymore!

It looks so fun and I'll admit, I want the Tiffany medal. #irunforbling

No. Odd since they have a preview for the Star Wars Half...

Right? That was quite surprising!

So I just got excited because my little ol' Timex watch does Intervals!!! I'm beyond excited. I've been borrowing my mom's gymboss thingy, and looked at an app for my phone today (but in the cold my phone already has battery issues so didn't want that draining it too). Today was the first day I really fell into the groove of the run/walk at a 1:00/:30, so think I'll make it & survive, plus it wasn't freezing here & we have sunshine! Random I know but I was thrilled by it!

Catching up here

Alright John, I may be wrong, did you say you were skipping this year's marathon weekend? I think you should be there to present Keels her Dopey finishers medal since you talked her into it :) ::yes:: That would be a nice Kodak moment

You are correct. I will not be at this year's race. I would love to go back & present @Keels medal to her, tears and all, but I'm stuck being the person in the office while the other member of our management team is visiting her family for the holidays. I hope I'll find an equally good way to show how proud I am of her.

Don't you worry! I got this! My girl @Keels is gonna rock this Dopey challenge!! :cool1:
