Marathon Weekend 2016

As posted last week, I went to my doctor who (after X-rays) was not sure of my diagnosis but thought it was tendonitis. He recommended that I give it two weeks then see a podiatrist if things had not improved. Things still had not improved at all on Monday so I went ahead and made the appointment - saw the podiatrist this morning. Short story now made long - I have stress fractures in my left foot and am not allowed to run for 6 weeks. In an air cast through the end of December, then slowly weaned off. The good news - this bone injury will heal completely and not impact my running in the future. The podiatrist assured me that this was a much better diagnosis than tendon or ligament injuries given my love of running. So I'll stay positive and accept that which I cannot change.
.
Sorry to hear, but at least you've got a positive look at it! Make a huge sign so we can see you if you cheer, I know I'll be needing any boost I can get out there!

My November mileage before my injury - 77 miles. Not bad for 10 days, but I am officially done running for the year and have deferred the 2016 Dopey.

We will still be in WDW for the races. We are actually headed down for the New Year's celebration so will be there for 2 weeks before our cruise. But no races for me.

Keep up the good work and I hope to see some of you in WDW. I'll be there cheering you on.

I'm sorry to hear that the injury is worse than expected, but I love that you're keeping a positive attitude! And it's pretty great that this injury won't affect your future running - hopefully that means that you will rock Dopey 2017!

Thanks to everyone for the well wishes and sympathy.

I got my deferral confirmation, so I am in for Dopey in 2017. Assuming I heal properly, I can start training again sometime around the end of January.

So sorry to hear this! But it's so great to hear you being so positive.

As for me, the good news is, I think I found my stride back. I was reading a bunch of stuff on cadence and stride and watching videos, and I THINK shortening my stride was solved the issue.

HOWEVER, when I got home, my ankle felt really weird. I thought it was just sore from running on it weird over the weekend, it had been sore since then. But just felt like muscle soreness. Well, low and behold, my ankle was all puffed up and swollen. It's the same ankle I slightly sprained last year, but I didn't even feel myself tweak anything this weekend.

I iced it all last night and have it taped up for during the day. But hopefully it doesn't last too long. It's the weirdest thing. Because when I rolled it last year, I rolled it good; fell on the ground and everything.

I guess rest and ice is in the cards for me for a while!

Oh no!! So sorry to hear this , especially for you. You are especially supportive for the rest of us, and eager to share your experience and knowledge. I know I have been grateful for it, and have tried to remember your mottos- My race my pace,
And you are stronger than you think!
Great motivators, thank you for them!

Selfishly, as I deferred also, I am looking forward to meeting again as we post our training progress for 2017!!!
Sending a hug!

Is that allowed?!?!

And the report began.....

:rotfl2:

Kathy noooo! Not you too?!
Ice and elevate! When sitting keep your ankle higher than your heart- that goes for you too @BuckeyeBama , it will help to keep the swelling down.
Be well, get better, I'm looking forward to some great posts from you!

Everyone else, stay healthy!! Please!!

Glad you were able to defer! Hope you heal quickly and enjoy your restful vacation! (Wait, does restful and Disney go together? hmm)
LOL - We have APs and go often, so I can do WDW in a restful way. (we were just there last week) Besides, we are going on a cruise after WDW - I can rest on the boat!

Any recommendations on good runners? I need to get a new pair before the Goofy Challenge, likely this weekend or next. My latest have been Brooks Adrenaline 14. I think I might just replace with 16 but interested to know if there are models you recommend looking at?

Ha...I read your post and was like "...we're all good runners here." You meant shoes. :teeth:

I'm currently in 14s too. I was going to grab a few pairs of the 15s since they are marked down but they get BAD reviews. Gonna have to bite the bullet and try the 16s, I guess.

I've been running in Brooks Ravenna 6, but I just ordered another pair of 6s and a new pair of Ravenna 7s.

Since we're talking shoes, I've got an opinion question:

I have about 225 miles on my current pair of Saucony Guide 8s. If I continue to use them for every run from now until marathon weekend, they'll be somewhere between 275 and 300 miles.
I bought another pair of the Guide 8s on sale last week, and they arrived today.
Do you guys think I should start rotating in the new shoes so that I have two pairs of shoes for marathon weekend (and can wear different shoes for my two races)? Or should I stick with the pair I'm currently wearing and not think about the new shoes until after January?
Neither pair of shoes matches my costumes, so color is not a factor.
Opinions?

(In case you guys forgot, I'm doing the 5K & 10K, and that's the end of my marathon weekend running)

I would say start rotating now.

If you plan to wear the same shoes in the parks, then I definitely say start rotating them in now. That way, you can use the older pair for the 5k and then phase them into their new life as parks/walking shoes, and then you've broken in your new pair for 10K and continued running shoes.

If you like neutral shoes, I highly recommend Brooks Glycerins. They are incredibly cushioned and comfortable to run in. You can usually find the previous year's model for 50%+ off online, too.

Like Keels, I felt terrible when I read this. I am glad you went to the doctor and you didn't try to keep running and possibly did more damage. I am sorry you can't run this year. But, you do get to go to Disney still so not a bad way to get over the disappointment of missing the race.

If you do cheer on the course, let us know. If I can find you I will stop and say hi for sure. I will most likely be walking at this point anyway since my training is going so badly.

Glad you found your groove again. Just rest that ankle and don't make it worse!!!

I love my Asics. I always post it when asked about shoes. I have the Asics Cummulus 16's (I think), and the Nimbus 17's. The Nimbus are heavier but much softer. The Cummulus are lighter and still have a decent amount of cushion.

I agree with Keels. (I think it was Keels anyway). I would start to rotate and bring both pairs on the trip. Use the older ones to walk the parks (unless you have another preferred pair of shoes you are going to do that in) and the new pair for the races.

OT, is the SF Women's half the Nike one? I really want to do that one some day, but those hills scare me. Also, you walked it faster than I've run/walked my last two half marathons. lol.

Haha, OK I didn't completely walk it. I tried to murder my knees and ran don every hill they had to offer and walked everything else. And I abided by my mile 1 rule: No walking the first mile. But yes, this was for the Nike Women's Half.. I've done it every year since 2012. This year's "perks" left a lot to be desired so who knows what 2016 will end up being- but our Student won't be in classes any longer at that point so we'll see if we even get it anymore!

Planning a simulated Dopey for the rest of this week. 5K tomorrow, 10K Friday, 10 miles Saturday, and 18 miles Sunday. Hopefully waking up at 5:30 four straight days is the toughest obstacle.

I'm at 5K tomorrow, 10K Friday, 13.1 on Saturday (virtual to support my fabulous pals running St. Jude!) and then I'm going to try for 16-18 on Sunday.

Daytime runs tomorrow and Friday, and then I'm shooting for 8 a.m. Texas time on Saturday and Sunday.

Shoes are a a very individual thing the Adrenalines you are currently running in are a stability shoes with a 12 mm drop. If you got fitted at a running store and they thought you needed a stability shoe you might want to stay with shoes in that catagory. If you are used to a 12 mm drop switching to a lower drop shoe too quickly can put strain on your ankle. I think most of the saucony's will have an 8mm drop or lower which would be a big adjustment. Most of the adidas shoes are in a 9-10mm drop range. I tried on some mizuno's ( wave riders this weekend that were a 12mm drop, but I think they are a little less cusioned for what you want.)

I'd agree with the other people that responded. If I am doing a multi-race weekend I like to have more than one pair of shoes. If it rains or water get's dumped on one pair you have a dry pair as a backup. It would be much better to have 2 pairs and not need one of them than to have only one pair and find yourself really wishing you have the other pair.
