Marathon Weekend 2016

On the run Disney page it say that we will start receiving information 3 months for the event. Are we not a 3 months from the running weekend yet? Anyone got any e-mails?

About negative splits and a reason to attempt them. One idea for running negative splits is to keep your pace under control at the beginning of the race. At the start, your excitement can get the best of you and you just go out following the people in front of you and before you know it you just finished the first 5k at what would be a 5k PR, but still have 23.1 to go. Doing something like this will crush you towards the back half of the race. It's not a crazy thing to do either, since you have been running more than usual, a faster than normal 5k isn't as hard to do. It can happen to all levels of runners. I watched the Boston Marathon this year and there was a guy in the lead pack that the commentators had no idea who he was because he wasn't ranked in the top 50 ish runners. Well come to find out, the guy wanted his kids to see him on TV so he busted it for the first 5k - 10k and had a nice time at the half. I think his second half took him nearly 2 hours. He is an accomplished runner to be in the first wave and probably a 2:30 marathoner or better. Just and example of why going out to fast will cost you in the end. So while you may not end up running negative splits, it could help prevent you from making a mistake that will cost you in the end. I personally run my first mile 15 to 30 seconds slower than GMP to make sure I don't get caught up in the moment. That does mean looking at my watch a lot, but it pays off. If all goes well, I try to make up those few seconds in the last 5k of the race.

I forgot all about that runner. If I recall he did have a VERY hard second half of the race, but he said he really wanted his kids to see him and it was worth it to him.

Speaking of rundisney ... Any guesses when we're going to see the medals? They usually release them 2-3 months in advance, right?

Not that I think they'll be significantly different from last year's (minus Goofy, which I assume will not commemorate the 10th anniversary of the event), but I kinda really want to see them

Been wondering this myself. We got images from TOT expo then official images a week later. So I would say any time now rD will be releasing images. Hopefully we don't have to wait until W&D expo to see them!

I'd say another month for the medal images...Disneyland half were released about 2 months before the race.

True, but I think that was abnormal.
Wine & Dine medals were posted on August 21st and most of the Avengers medals were posted on August 26th. Both about two weeks short of three months before the race.
Using that as our timeline, we should see the medals next week.

Last year the medals were released in early October (I want to say the 8th). So I'm hoping we see them this week, but I think that unless there's a problem with the medals, it'll be no later than next week. I think we'll get the official images from runDisney before the W&D expo.

You WILL get there. I was an interval runner all the way upto my Disneyland half a month ago...all my training was nothing but intervals. Yes I had a hand full of long steady runs but they were hard. For the half, i ran the ENTIRE thing and I was suprised. I should have taken a couple of walk breaks and likely would have been faster but that's ok. I'm just saying that if you keep going and improving then you will reach that goal.

I'd like to think this is true, but I'm really, really slow. I fear the only way I can run straight through is to run even slower and that doesn't seem fun. HA. But I shall keep plugging along!!

Glad your cruise was great! Welcome back!

I totally know how you feel, I feel like I backslid the summer, I used to run straight, but now just don't know if I'll get there again.

Just curious, are you trying your longer intervals when you do your long runs, or are you using shorter intervals for your long runs?

If I could actually run a race with my run interval speed I would be ecstatic!.... But also just don't see it happening

I use the shorter intervals (1:1) on my long runs. I'm very new at longer distances and want to make sure I can actually keep running the whole distance. On my weekday runs, I'm usually at a track, so I've been going by distance/lap. Starting with running for half a lap, Trying to work up to running for a full lap by the end of my 30 minute workout.

I'm here to report that my weekend long run has left me a mental head case. It was the worse run I have had in the last 2 years. It was a combination of many bad ideas leading up to it, and I have a good idea of why it all went wrong. Bad runs happen, but that doesn't make it any easier to accept them. Hopefully I will redeem myself this Sunday for my first half marathon of the season.

I actually like to slow it down at the end of a prancercise! Really funk and blues up the ending...a lot of interpritive arm movements that summarize my journey. Unless there's someone prancing right behind me that could possibly be in my age group...then I prance like the wind!!!

Someone needs to make a "prance like the wind" t-shirt.

Do you see @IamTrike?!?!
Lol!

I've been thinking about him all morning- hoping he's is having the race he trained for!

He is an inspiration...

As are all of you!!

We'll we are wrapping up our time in Chicago. The race was a lot of fun. I managed to PR by about 16 minutes but our group didn't hit our stretch goal. Our pace was pretty close to goal pace usually between 4-8 seconds ahead of pace up through mile 20. Our training was good but we had some leg cramping issues that slowed us during the last couple of miles. At one point one of the guys we were running with was stretching his legs on the curb. There was a nice gentleman on the side of the road that offered some advice. As we took off running again, someone pointed out "you do realize that was Bart Yasso giving yall advice".

If you want to see me finish you can actually see it here. http://www.nbcchicago.com/video/#!/news/local/2015-Chicago-Marathon-Finish-Line-Cam-5/331926511 If you fastforward to 2:36 you can see me. I'm close to the center in a yellow shirt between a guy in a black shirt and a guy with no shirt.

Thanks for all the encouragement. Now I get to relax till my trail marathon next weekend.

Congrats on the finish and PR!! I hope you enjoyed our great city. Great job on the pacing.

Really sorry to hear that. Just remember not to take too much away from a single run. Don't try to learn too much from it - could have just not been your day. Stay strong and trust your training.

Good luck this weekend!

It's not a good training season if I don't have at least one bad run leading up to the race. Better to get it out of the way in advance than on race day. You'll be fine on Sunday.

Congrats on finishing the marathon and PRing @IamTrike
I hope you had a great time in Chicago and that you enjoyed the route through all the neighborhoods.
Question for you: How brutal was that last hill up Roosevelt Rd where mile 26 ended before turning into the finish chute? It looked brutal on tv and I know I have two races next year (an 8k and a half) that end there. Hopefully you say it is nothing to be afraid of :)

This is a separate reminder to myself and everyone that FP day is coming around the corner. Depending on when you are arriving it will be first week of Nov or the second week. Mine is 11/7 mercifully on a Sat. I am not prepared yet to make my selections...I still have to buy my park tickets!!!!

I have run Chicago three times, and the Roosevelt hill at the end is not that bad; however, after 26 miles, it's still an incline that you would rather not do. For an 8k or a half, I wouldn't worry about it.

Sorry to hear about your run, just remember you have to break a few eggs to make an omelet...or something like that.

It sounds like you know what you did wrong and likely won't do it again, so when taken in that context your bad run will become a good thing.

It was a great time. I loved running through the city... And enjoying some different tastes of the city too.

I wouldn't worry about that hill that much. It was a hill, but the grade and length aren't bad. I think the overpasses at the end of the Disneyworld half are harder.

Agreed.

Thanks for easing my worry about that hill. I think the camera angle and the announcers were making it seem worse than it probably was. I know I've walked up it before on the way to Bears games (but never with running in mind.)

Look on the bright side at least you got your run in...my long run didn't happens this weekend because my body felt like it just straight up revolted against me, massive headache Friday and then Saturday when I was supposed to run I almost couldn't get out of bed I swear everything hurt...I have no idea what brought this on but hopefully I'm getting it out of the way now when my long run was only 10 miles (a distance I know I can accomplish) and not on one of my later weekends when ill be hitting new distance highs. sounds like you know what your issues where and I wouldn't make to much out of one bad run

congrats I will definitely have to watch the video later I love watching finish line videos its such a great thing to watch people achieve their goals as they cross, on my half last weekend I was the first in my group of friends that finished and I had a lot of fun walking back up to the finish area and taking it in as a spectator while i waited for them it was neat and something I wish I did more often

Thats a really cool story. Its really cool to have talked to someone who, at the time you no idea who they where, like they are just an average joe. Then to come to find out it's someone that knows a lot about the sport you are partaking in during the middle of a marathon. Congrats on your run and enjoy a little off time until next weekend. Do you plan on getting any runs in between the two? Maybe just to loosen things up maybe?

I hope it's like a play. A bad dress rehearsal is the sign of a good performance. I hope your half this weekend goes well.

Yeah it's great having little experiences like that. During an elevator ride Friday my buddy started talking with someone who was kind of shy. My buddy was like "how fast are you?" He said his name was Dickson and he ran 2:04 last year. It turns out Dickson ran a little slower this year... but he was still fast enough to win.

I've got a conference in Orlando this week so I'm not sure how much running I'll do. I'd like to do at least one shakeout run though.

Congrats to you IamTrike! 16 minutes is a huge PR. I do hope to run Chicago someday. Any of you running the Detroit Marathon this weekend? I am getting excited and anxious! Planning an agressive PR goal, so we shall see! Any of you running good luck!
