Marathon Training Thread for 6/21-6/28

I'm sure some of you are out walking/jogging/running as I type. I got out early and walked 1:39:36. Wow. I really didn't want to walk for the first 20 minutes and kept praying for rain so I could go home. ::yes:: Then at about the hour mark I was thinking I might could finish. (I planned on 1:40) At about the 1:20 mark I really wanted to head home, but then I really liked the feeling of control that since I wasn't physically hurting, I should/could finish. And I kept picturing myself crossing the finish line with Karen! So...I think this is my longest walk yet. I lost most of the week to rain, so I was glad to be able to just complete it!!

Colleen- good for you on your 5 miles! It's hard to go when it is so humid!!

Monica, sorry about the work and family issues...I can so relate. I think that is one reason I was looking for the "control" in my walk this morning. Everything else seems so beyond my control, you know?

Krista, have a magical time at Disney!! Man, do I wish I were there!

ohMom, good for you on getting in a great workout when you hadn't planned to!! Funny about yelling through the neighborhood. Thank you for sharing with us about Paige. I hope her summer is good for her and that she doesn't have any flareups! She must be a brave girl with all she must endure. Good for you on the TM idea for the infusion area!! I sat with a friend through her chemo treatments last year and it was horrid. All the patients were in one large room and sortof spread around the outside edge of the room wth a few in the center facing out. There were a few TV's, but most of the time was just spent staring at people who were coming into the room or leaving. It was so awful. I did write a letter, but I doubt anything came of it. Waiting is hard!! It wasn't that anyone meant to stare at incoming and outgoing patients, but that was where your attention went when there was activity...

Katiebelle, good for you on the walking...outside and TM! And to shave 2 minutes off your mile time!! That is awesome. I bet the Frappacino was great. Oh well. Just flex the points and pull in a few extra activity points and youwill be fine!

Have a great weekend everyone! Tomorrow is my planned day off but I will most likely check in!
~~Beth

Morning everyone -

Weather is great here today - it felt like a "slow" 8 miler today but not really - usual course, usual time - so I will just be satisfied!

I am off to shower then a little shopping before birthday party (he's one today) for Evansmom DS. ohMom and I will get the update from her today too. She is off for summer break and no computer at home but she is training ::yes::

I should be on the boards more now - sure miss you guys - Monday I am making a recommittment to REALLY getting these last 10 pounds off and I want to structure my exercise plan too. I probably will sign a contract with myself so that I know that I am serious - will keep you posted :teeth:

Also, update on the "surprise" if you haven't posted or e-mailed me your wrist size (or really your bracelet size) (let me know which tho) and your ADDRESSS too, please do - the gal that is making them has been off this week (her grandmother passed away) but I am expecting that she will have some done when she gets back Monday and I want to mail them out ASAP !!!

Hugs to all - keep up the good work and hope your weather is great to get in all those longer walks for the weekend!!

Welcome back, grammy! You have been missed this week!!

Have a magical day!

You are all so wonderful- and look we have mor wonderful people joining us everyday! Katiebelle and Hairsprayhon- we are all so happy you joined us. I sure hope this thread is as helpful and inspiriing to you as it has been for me! FYI- we start a new thread every week- so look for that new thread come Sunday night.

Beth- I AM SOOOOOO PROUD OF YOU GIRL! Didn't you feel so impowered when you finished? When you pictured you and I crossing the finishline together...... was I thin and beautiful??? Freshly made up with beautful, long, dark curly locks? If so- that wasn't me- it was ASHLEY!!! :teeth: I got a big grin on my face when I read that and it made me feel good- thanks! It also got me thinking about what everyone else looks like! We should post what we think each other looks like based on their personality- that'd be so fun.

Grammy- YEAH- YOU"RE COMING BACK REGULARLY! I have missed seeing your daily posts. It sounds like you're holding your own on the walking. I'll join you starting Monday with the recommittal to lose 10 more lbs. That's just a drop in the bucket for me, but I leave for a visit to WI. on 2 weeks and I'd like to drop 10 lbs. by then- if not get it off then at least get a good start on it. I can hardly wait to get my "surprise" in the mail! :teeth:

Cheryl- can you pm me the dates you have work off again from the 8-14th in July? I wrote them down but lost the paper- and I really want to meet you while I'm in WISC. next month. I think barbruka will be able to come too- it just depends on the day we decide.

Mom- you stayed up late and then got up early to "walk" and ended up running!!! WOW- You really are serious about getting ready for the marathon aren't you? Are you guys aware of how early we're gonna have to get up to do this half marathon? Well- Mom is gonna be ready for every aspect of it! We should all do what Mom does! I'm glad you weren't kidnapped! I had to chuckle when I read that because it something I would do- panic if I didn't see you and saw a car drving away fast. I guess I'm not that unusual after all! It made me feel better to read that!

Monica- Don't worry about missing your workout yesterday. There are always gonna be days when we can't work our schedule the way we want to. It sounds like you were able to do a little- that's really better then nothing. I hope your weekend goes better for you so that you can get your workouts in.

Colleen- YEAH!! 5 MILES for you! Done and over- even if they were slow. Remember- you have plenty of time to work on speed- building endurance is a great thing. Can you believe you did 5 miles. Let's think about this people! 5 MILES!!! Grammy did 8 MILES!!! When I think about what that means it's just amazing! Would anyone of us a year ago think we could or would VOLUNTARILY walk 1 mile???? Not me!

I think we should keep a running (pun not intended!) total on how many miles we walk/run between now and January- I'll bet our jaws would drop!

Today I am going to Mount St. Helens to do my 5 miles. I've never been there and I thought it'd be interesting to go and check out the old volcano while we were living out here in the NW. When I get back I'll report on my trip and my mileage and tell y'all how it went. Have a great Saturday everybody!!

Oh- I am working on the t-shirt iron ons- just taking me longer then I expected to get a design I am happy with .

LOVE YA ALL!!!!!

I got in my long walk this morning, I walked for 90 min. I think I went close to 6 miles! I know I did 4 miles in the first hour because I walked to my sisters house and back which is 4 miles round trip so now I finally found a course I can walk and know what the mileage so I know better what kind of pace I am keeping. There are a few good sized hills on the way there and back so if I keep walking that course I will get in some training for the hill near the Contemporary. After walking to my sisters I walked through our neighborhood for another 30 min but I think I was slowing down a little towards the end because my 1 calf was getting a little sore. A man a few streets over was sitting in his driveway because he was having a rummage sale and I walked passed him 3 times, he probably wondered what I was doing LOL. Tomorrow I am hoping to get in another hour walk.

Katie That's great that you walked with your family and then again later on the TM! Great job shaving 2 min. off your time, that's fantastic!

Beth Great job on pushing yourself to complete your entire walk this morning! You should be so proud of yourself! It sure is a mind game when you do a long walk sometimes isn't it?

Grammy Glad to hear you'll be able to get here more regularly! I'd like to join you on Monday too to recommitting to loose 10 pounds (I'd love to loose 15 more but would be happy to get rid of 10). With all the walking I've been doing lately I know that if I'd just start eating good again I should be able to loose that last 10-15 pounds, right. I remember reading somewhere that losing just 10 pounds will make a tremendous difference in walking a marathon. So I am recommiting to eating healthy and cutting out the junk and writing down what I eat starting Monday. Lets help each other get through this too! I'm getting excited about the surprise from you! I can't wait to see what it is!

Karen I'll send you a PM about the dates for your visit to WI. I am really looking forward to meeting you! I hope you had a good 5 mile walk at Mount St. Helens! Let us know how it went.

Everyone is doing such a great job, keep it up :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Have a good Sunday everyone!
:sunny:

Thanks for the welcome everybody! And the encouragement about not worrying about my time. One of my plans is to have my father start to pace me around Sept as he does a 14 min mile. It has been a tough week but I walked 3.2 miles on Tues, Wed, and Thurs, 4 miles on Fri and almost 3 miles tonight. I go for 4 miles again tomorrow. See everybody on next weeks thread, I will try and check in more often.

Karebear1 that is excellent news about your BS.

LAWalkz- sounds to me like you havd a very busy pordictuive week of workouts! Good for you!

I'm back from my walk at Mt. St. Helen's. It was so beautiful up there. I took some pics with my digital camera and wanted to post them, but I went to the tech. board to read how to do it---- and I can't figure it out for the life of me. If someone has an easy way to do this - please let me know. You all would love these pics!

Thanks to everyone for the encouragement! I walked 3 miles today with one of my DDs in the jogging stroller. It took me an hour and ten minutes, but this is just the beginning. One of my other DDs was sad that she did not get to go on the walk today, but I was not going to push a double stroller for 3 miles! I promised her that I would take her tomorrow. I will see how I feel in the morning, but I am going to try to do another 3 miles tomorrow. I am very proud of all of this week. Let's have another great week!

Sounds like everyone had a great long training day yesterday! Today is an off day for me, and I had thought that I would get up and walk anyway, but at 5AM I changed my mind and went back to bed!lol.

LAWalz, you've done some great walking this week!! Way to go!! I'm also waiting until September to worry about speed. In this heat, just making it out and back is enough!::yes::

Karen, wow...walking at Mt. St. Helen's!! I think that be awesome. But for me, I'd be so slow from looking at the scenery!! Nice to have someplace like that to train!! ::yes:: AND I would love to see your pictures!! As would my girls. We've studied Mt. St. Helen's this week. Isn't that funnY? But, Monday we take our passports and head to Mexico. (Not really...just our geography study)

KatieBelle, how old are your little ones? My oldest 2 were stroller aged at the same time. My hat is off to you...strollering while you are walking, and just being able to get out of the house when they are that small. Great job on the 3 miles! ::yes::

Cheryl, I laughed about you passing that man 3 times. Here's the funny part...I walk the same 2 blocks over and over and over and over, unless I go up to the nature trail in the next town. So, although I only walked my course ELEVEN times, I passed everything 22 times. My course is a sort of T-shaped course. I've gotten to where I say good morning to everyone I pass and eventually they head back inside when they see me coming AGAIN!

GRammy, I've been thinking about your recommittment. I think I'm going to do the same and go back to my strict food journaling. I've been slacking and even though I know that 16 chocolate chips is a serving, that doesn't mean Ishould have one!lol....so come Monday, I'm with you....Gonna work on the nutrition side of my WISH as well as my Fitness. (I can see a scale in balance in my mind...like those legal symbol scales...Fitness in one side and nutrition in the other...) Thanks for bringing this up. :cheer2:

Ok...all from me today. Have a great Sunday everyone!! Get your rest, Drink your water, and get focused on the week ahead!!
~~Beth

Morning everyone!

a quick post --I need to pack for WDW! (bwa-ha-ha, just rubbing it in!! :p )

did 9 miles this morning. I was going to try for 10, but decided that I didn't want to push my limits and be hurt for our trip. My birthday is Wednesday and being able to run 10 miles is a milestone I wanted to reach before turning 41. I'll get over it! The good news is, I was way faster than last week.

Big pat on the back to all of you who got out and walked/ran! Hugs and a kick in the behind ( a loving, motivating one to help get you out the door!) to those who didn't.

I read something once that I think is really important to keep in mind. Someone was commenting on another person getting up early to go run. The comment was "nothing is worth getting up that early." Her reply was, "I am." It may be early, hot, whatever. You are worth the effort. You deserve to take the time to make yourself healthier and stronger. So, get out there team!

Now, did I mention I have to pack? :teeth:

I did 3.8 miles yesterday with an average time of about 13.5 minute per mile. I actually jogged two segements, one for .5 miles and one for.9 miles. (I also did a cool down walk, but have no idea how far that was)

I found a great place to do walks near my house since it is all measured off!

I did another 4 miles this morning after being woken up at 7am to work overtime this afternoon. Oh well, the extra money helps!

Karebear1- The scenery at Mount St. Helen's must have been awesome. It is cool that you can combine your training with a trip like that!

Katiebelle- Three miles with a stroller is terrific. You are probably building extra endurance due to having to push the stroller. I remember pushing my niece and nephew in a double at WDW last year and I was tired at the end of the day.

pixiechick- Have a great time at WDW. Wish I could hide in your suitcase but I guess I will just have to wait until August. Nine miles is great! My goal is 6 mile before my birthday at the end of next month.

CarolA.- 13.5 minutes a mile is terrific! I am hoping to get to 13.5 minutes a mile before the marathon.

Trola2- I would have slept if the phone hadn't rung this am. I know you will do it tommorrow.

From my SEVEN MILE WORKOUT!

I ran 3 walked 2 for seven miles, with a quarter mile warm up and cool down, for a total of 7.5 miles.

It took me an hour and thirty minutes to complete.

I did the hilly route that I complained about before. The hills are still really big and frustrating, but also quite motivating. I ran around the route three times, and almost quit, but realized that if I train to be a quitter, I will quit. I persisted even through the rain.

I just wanted to post because I am really happy! :) These past couple of weeks have been challenging me, and I believe I just told them who was boss!

Now off to do laundry.

I did update the roster this weekend, but I can't figure out how to put a file into a PM, and some people didn't give me their email addresses. I don't have time to get it out right now, but I will check back and see if anybody replies after laundry and dinner.

Keep up the good work, ladies (and gentlemen!)! I'll see you on next week's thread!

Ashley:wave2:

Did another 30 min walk today (for 3x total this week) with a couple of 15 min ones in between (the 15 min ones sure don't feel like a 'workout' anymore! The joints are loosening up! I'll have a 50 min one after a day of rest tomorrow.....have to get up really early for that one! Only done so-so on the food this week, however, two sugar related incidents. But I've been sugar free and on target for carbs for two days.....I know if I can make it for four, the sugar problem will go away!

I also had some computer 'techie' training this weekend....so please notice my avatar! No one has to worry about recognizing me. This was just taken in April, after my 30 lbs loss of the fall/winter, so it's my 'current' look. ;)

Hey Monica.......looks like we may 'overlap' in WDW in September. I'm getting a 'mostly free, extra trip' that runs Sunday 9/5 through Friday 9/10. It's for my friend, PixieMagic's brithday. She booked the week at the Hilton at Downtown Disney and then just 'happened' to have another airline ticket  and invited me to 'tag along'. Some friend, huh? I know you are there for a short time for Night of Joy, but maybe as the time gets closer we can arrange to meet for a bite of lunch or something. PixieMagic is also doing the 1/2 marathon, and this trip will be right before SERIOUS MARATHON training begins.
