I was considering maybe making it a long term goal to do the 1/2 marathon in 2009. I see lots of signatures with Mickey, Goofy and Donald in relation to the marathon. What is the difference between them? Just curious... :)

Welcome

Finish the half: Get a donald medal
Finish the full: Get a mickey medal
Register for and finish both: Get a goofy medal as the cherry on top.

Both :scared1: You people are scary! :lmao:

Thanks for the info. I think just doing the Donald would be a HUGE accomplishment for someone like me. I can't imagine what level of fitness and dedication it takes to do the others.

becka,

Congratulations! to you for being interested in doing the half in 2009.

This will be your first attempt at a half and you stick with the WISH Team I guarantee that you will love every bit of it from the training through stepping over that finish line.

I will so love having you join in the weekly walker/runner thread as you are working toward that goal. The journey of the training thread is all of what makes the finish line more meaningful.

Ooooh this will be such fun!

:yay: :dance3: :yay: :dance3: :yay:

When I figure that out I will let you know.:rotfl2:

I have a 5 month old, I have thunder thighs, and my best efforts to exercise this summer went kaput!:rotfl:

Level of fitness is questionable and dedication---well I am dedicated to showing up.:lmao:

The half is quite an admirable goal! Just aiming for that goal is something many folks will not do! There is no "only" anything!

Thanks for the info and the welcome. Like I said this is really a long term goal for me and I am still not sure it would work out. I know it is in January which is a very difficult time to get off of work. Not to mention that we are doing a 7 day DCL cruise in early December '08 so my DS will already be missing too much school for the year. I would kind of hate to do something like this without the support of my family.

For now I am just going to keep exercising and maybe try a 5k walk/run for St. Patricks Day next year. After that I may have a better idea if the 1/2 marathon would even work for me.

Welcome Becka!!!!

The Half is a fun race and is most definitely not a ONLY sort of distance. It's a race in itself :goodvibes

I hope you are able to join us for the 2009 Marathon Weekend but if your work plans don't allow it do not give up hope! Keep a close eye around here and you'll hear our screams of joy or terror depending on dates Disney picks for it's other races. You see we're all on pins and needles waiting to see what if anything Disney will do to replace or bring back the Minnie Marathon in May. The Minnie Marathon in May for 2006 and 2007 was a 15K (9 miles? some day I will be able to compute K's quickly LOL). There is talk for 2008 but what we have no clue yet :confused3

Disney now has a new race this October for the Tower of Terror anniversay which will be a 13K (8 miles) and a 6.5K (4 miles). So there is also hope they will continue with this race.

Don't forget there is the 10K (6 miles) traditionally held earlier in October.

So if January doesn't fit into your plans hopefully one of the other races will soon find you in the mist of a bunch of crazy people (namely us).

And never judge a racer by their thighs. Mine definitely need a nice inseam to keep the chub rub to a minimum ;) We walk, run, crawl and even waddle like Donald to get to that finish line. Doesn't matter :thumbsup2

Start working towards that goal of doing one of the races and you can be sure a few (? LMBO) of us will be there. The team seems to be putting in quite a showing at both Disney and non-Disney races.

Join the training thread like Lily said, it is full of support and you'll find all levels there.

Keep the dream/goal and keep moving towards it

Hello Becka

One thing to keep in mind is "there is no I only did the half." 13.1 miles is a long way, you cannot cheat the distance, and upon finishing you have justifiably earned the right to feel very good about yourself. I wish you well in building up to 13. Be sure to build a good base and build slowly. This will maximize the probability of a good result and minimize the chance of an injury.

And, getting to the Goofy really isn't that much more than training for the marathon. The only real change most of us made in our Goofy training is doing a few back-to-back grinders in the late fall, so we would know what it takes mentally and physically to do 13 on Saturday and then 26 on Sunday. After I did the inagural Goofy I swore I was too smart to try it again (one of my colleagues told me that my finishing the Goofy in 2006 was a test of my fitness, and not doing in in 2007 was a test of my IQ), but I wish I was registered for Goofy in 2008 and plan to register for him in 2009.

Good luck in your build up to 2009. It may seem a long way off, but it really isn't, and the more gradual your increase in miles per week, the more likely you'll have a great experience on race day.

Becka,
I hope you can do the 1/2 in '09, if not, maybe the next year! Having completed the 1/2 last year, let me say it is quite an accomplishment. I am not a runner. I really planned on walking the whole thing but did mix it up and run a little. I didn't have time to really train and I regret that part. My father passed away from cancer in Nov. so I felt it was very important to spend what time I had with him instead. Still, I made it. I had a great support partner though--DH and I probably would not have made it without him.

This year, I'm "only" doing the 5K. We're (mom, dd, dh, and I) doing it together. my mom will be 70 then and I'm hoping to keep up with her!! LOL

DH is doing the 5K, 1/2 and whole and he calls it the "stupid Goofy". I call it the "super Goofy".

Good luck as you lose weight and get in shape! Completing any race along the way gives a sense of accomplishment!
