In addition to the resort occupancy tax, I found out that Alauni charges $25 per night for parking. Wow, not sure we will stay there!

we stayed on concierge collection in hawaii a couple years ago. they charged this $25 parking resort charge per night, per room. we had two rooms-$50 per night. we did not even have a car-never rented one the entire trip. plus the occupancy tax. and there were more fees...they kept coming up...adjoining room fee. that was another $25 per room per night. for two rooms, another $50. i never saw saw many charges, there were hospitality taxes and other fees that kept adding up day by day, room by room....

When we stayed at the Marriott Ko Olina 4 years ago, I don't remember being charged a parking fee. And $25/night I'd remember! So, what will all the fees add up to per night? DH doesn't know if he's interested in going back to Hawaii, and this might make my job of talking him into it even harder.

It's pretty standard for hotels in Hawaii to charge for parking. It is possible that DVC members might be exempt from this fee just like they are exempt from paying for internet. Until a DVC member stays on points we won't really know if there are extra fees, except for the occupancy tax which is state law. BTW, lots of states, counties or cities have room taxes for hotels and timeshares. In this economy every municipality needs income and taking the money from tourists is better than raising taxes for voters.

Why didn't you challenge that charge?

I would never pay for parking if I did not have a car, especially @ $50/day

I guess it won't be worth it to rent a car. I hope we don't get charged if we don't have a car.

I am an owner at Marriott's Ko Olina, and non-owners are charged $30 a day for parking. Owners aren't charged anything. It is common to have high parking fees in Hawaii at many hotels and resorts, and you DEFINITELY will want a car in Kapolei!

PS: if you were renting from an owner directly, they may have taken you for the owner thus no charge. If you book through Marriott and aren't an owner you'll be charged (unless they forget somehow which can happen!)

Good to know, since I am doing a direct exchange with a Marriott Ko'Olina owner in a couple years. Not sure if I'll have to pay the charges or not, since he will be making the reservation for me there, and I'll be making one at AKV for him here. At any rate, I think a car is necessary at Ko'Olina, because it certainly is quite a ways out and beyond "The Bus". We need to be going back and forth to downtown Honolulu for an event, so a car will be mandatory.

Do you have any reliable source indicating that DVC members will be subject to that fee?

According to sales literature that I have, DVC members will receive free parking at Aulani.

We stayed at the JW Marriott Ihilani which is adjacent to the new Disney property a couple of years ago. At that time, there was virtually nothing close by. I understand there are new commerical properties under construction now, but, in addition to touring, you will absolutely want a car for finding affordable necessities.

DVC members are now charged the resort/parking fee in CA. Wouldn't be surprised to see the same in Hawaii.

DVC members are charged for valet parking like everyone else. There isn't a fee to self park. And technically, you are suppose to pay for more than 2 cars, but we have had 3 cars and weren't charged for the extra car. When my DD stayed at the DLH on points, I don't think she paid for parking. She mentioned that her bill was $0. Which resort/parking fee are you referring to?

Are you sure about that? If so, when did this change?

Members are now charged for VALET parking at all resorts but self parking has always been complimentary. Parking lot upkeep is funded by member dues so I'm not sure it would even be legal for Disney to charge members a usage fee for a resort amenity they are funding.

Anytime I've stayed at DL on points I was never charged the resort fee. Haven't stayed in the Villas yet.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I thought that the resorts at DL went from charging a parking fee (to which DVC members were exempt) to a new "resort fee" which includes parking and that everyone has to pay. Maybe it starts in 2011???
