I have noticed many of you own in several DVC resorts. Here's my question: if I owned 100 points in both BCV and BWV, can I make a reservation at the 11 month mark at BCV that uses 150 points using both BCV and BWV points (no borrowing or banking of points for this question)?

Thanks for all your help. This is a great website.

Nope, the points have an 11-month windows only at their own resort. But you could use banking/borrowing/etc. to have 200 BCV points this year, and 200 BWV points next year.

Hope this helps,
Sal

No, and that is exactly why people own more than one home resort. They want the 11 month booking window, so they own home resort points at that resort.

Well, that and I think there may be one or two members of the DIS boards who treat their DVC membership like Pokemon cards - collect them all! Course, with more and more DVC resorts, that's getting to be an expensive collection.

(And I admit, its really hard every time a new resort opens or someone talks about how perfect their home resort is not to say 'oh, I want that too!')

We have contemplated adding a small contract (50pts or so). We have 150 at SSR, and have done very well with this contract. Another 50 would give us a little more flexibility for when we have to travel during peak times. Right now our daughter is pre-school age (and prior to having her) we have always done our vacations during off times. This is why we are thinking in a few years when we have to travel during school vacations we will need the additional points.

I would be interested as to how people manage these with different use years etc... My guess would be that you would be willing to switch resorts OR book with your 11 month window and then use your other points and try to get the other days, waitlist, or as I said, book at the other resorts 11 month window and then you would stay at two places on your visit.

Is that the idea?

Or, if someone owns 50 points at thress different resorts, through banking/borrowing they would have 150 points at each of them every third year.

So, year one, using 150 points at BWV, then year 2 use 150 points at BCV, then year 3 150 points at OKW, then start the cycle over.

When you do an add-on through Disney, you get your same use year. We did an initial contract, and when we realised it probably wasn't enough, we had to choose if we would add on at our original resort or do another primary contract at a different one (we purchased first at OKW but could have added at BWV). We decided to add on at our first home resort, because it made sense to us to have all the points available at the same home resort at the same time. We did make a smaller add on contract this year when AKV came out. We determined exactly how many points we would use every 3rd year, and purchased 1/3 of that total. That way those points remain seperate, and we will bank and borrow them as needed for every 3 year trips.

No, one is not allowed to do that.

If one were allowed to do that, then one could buy a very small contract in a DVC resort with larger dues, own lots of points in a DVC resort with lesser dues and then book a vacation at the larger dues place at the 11 month booking window.

That would not be fair, would it?

But can you combine at the 7 month window? 100 from OKW and 100 from BCV become 200 points to use at SSR?

Yes. We have VB and SSR points. Once inside 7 months they can be combined and used at any resort with availability. We tried VWL for this upcoming April at 7 months and were very surprised to get a week there. We are using VB and SSR points for this trip.

You can combine them if the contracts are related: one is a master and the other is an add-on to that master, or they are both add-ons to the same master contract.

If they are totally separate contracts, then you cannot combine the points. You can however book some nights of your stay using points from one contract, book a second reservation for the remaining nights using points from the other contract and then have the two reservations linked. Linking the two reservations allows them to function as one reservation. You will avoid the possibility of being assigned to two different rooms and having to pack up and change rooms for the second part of your stay.

ETA: Your other option with separate contracts is to transfer the points from one contract to the other in order to use the combined total for a reservation. The downside to this is that you are only allowed one transfer per UY (in or out). You would be using your one transfer for both contracts when you do this.

So if we buy through Disney, we would get the same use year, regardless of the resort?

Now I have 150 pts at SSR with a March use year. If I did an add on through Disney at either SSR or AKV then I would get the March use year?

Also - you can combine points at 7 months?

Hmmm. We are not sure we are ready to do an add on, but these are good things to know.

Yes if you add on through Disney, you will get the same UY regardless of which resort you purchase and it will be set up as an "add-on" contract.

If you specifically wanted a different UY, you would have to purchase a new master contract with a minimum of 160 points.

Yes.

See my post above.

Thanks again for the response. One more question : What resorts are currently still being sold through Disney? I assume SSR and AKV.

For master contracts, SSR nd AKV are being sold, and there may be some masters available at the other resorts in limited quanitity.

Add-ons should be available at almost all resorts.

Really? That's great, for some reason I was under the impression (not sure why) that add-ons were only available at the newer resorts!

This has me a bit more excited! We love SSR, but our two other favs are VWL and BCV. It would be great to be able to get a small add-on at one of these resorts and either split a vacation or get lucky at the 7month and book the whole thing!

I will have to talk with the wife. :thumbsup2

You can purchase any DVC resort from Disney. You may have to go on a waiting list for a bit (longer for BCV) to wait for points in your UY, but for any resort other than BCV it's usually not a long wait. When I added on at VWL last year they had plenty of points the day I called to add on. You get a full set of current Use Year points, no closing costs and your dues for this year will be pro-rated from your purchase date.

Here are the current prices for the "sold out" resorts:

BCV = $101/pt
BWV, VWL = $98/pt
HH and VB = $92/pt
OKW was $92/pt but is now being sold for $96/pt with its new expiration date of Jan 31, 2057.

Those are the very two resorts that we added-on!! Our main reasoning was that they each give us a completely different atmosphere and we want to go to each of them specific times of the year. (VWL/winter holidays & BCV/spring break and F&W) Also, those times are the busiest for the two resorts. We are using the banking and borrowing for them.

We LOVE SSR and have it for the anytime visits. . .summer, anniversary, years we are banking the other resorts, etc. It is our all-around resort. . .WONDERFUL anytime of the year!!

Although we have been lucky at the 7 month mark w/BWV, we are not willing to take too many chances. We like the assurance (for the most part) of the 11 month booking window.

Our reasoning for the add-ons are a change in travel times. In a few years we will not be able to pull our daughter out for school, and points are higher during the school breaks. Our 150 pts wont go very far during these times. We like to stay 7 days because we are travelling from NY. We have also been spoiled by the 1 bedrooms and want to continue staying in a 1 bedroom. So far we have had no problem with going during "off" times, borrowing a few points from the following year and booking a 1 bedroom.

I will start discussing with the wife and see what she thinks. She originally convinced me to buy into DVC, and now I will be the one asking to add-on. I really like the thought of buying 50 pts at another resort, and I think 200 will be fine (total), but then again I thought 150 would be too.

Don't forget that buying 50 at another resort doesn't give access to all 200 points at the 11 month booking window unless you wish to change resorts during your trip.
