I was thinking about heading down next month. It is about 7 hours from our house. What is a good hotel to stay at? Anything else to do down there? We will only have 2 days, is that enough??

Any info appreciated!!! Thanks!!!

Get tickets for the tours from the park service before you go. The tours do sell out.

Two days is fun for the caves. That will allow you to take two different cave tours.

I've always camped when we've gone down.

OP - the correct name is Mammoth Cave (singular) National Park -- it is part of the U.S. national parks system.

It is located near Cave City, KY -- and there are a few hotels off I-65. The nearest town of any "size" is Bowling Green, KY which offers a lot to do!

If you need more info, feel free to PM me, as my hometown is in that area.

Along with going to Mammoth Cave, if you want a true "caving" experience, check out Hidden River Cave. I think it is in Horse City or something like that. They have a website. They even give you the hardhats with the lights on them so you can see where you are going. Probably not suitable for real little ones.

No real info just wanted to tell you Mammoth Cave was one of the most fun vacations I ever had when I was a kid...maybe 11yrs old.!

There is also a park near there called Kentucky Down Under. It has lots of animals from Australia, a cave tour, fun for kids. Also there is Dinosaur World in the area. Fun if your kids are into dinosaurs. Few hotels and restaurants at Cave City, KY.

Another vote for Kentucky Down Under. It is a very hands on experience. They have the lorikeet area where you can feed the birds. There is also a large area with kangaroos, you walk through with a guide and with assistance you are allowed to pet a kangaroo.

Lots of good info on their site:

2 days is just about right. When we went we stayed in Bowling Green, I can't recall which hotel. The corvette museum is there and looked cool if you are into that sort of thing.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express - it was remodeled from a different old hotel - but it was clean & comfortable. Had an outdoor pool & continental breakfast. I don't see it listed any longer so that will obviously have no value. However, cavecity.com is their Chamber website & it will link you to lodging, etc., on there. Comfort Inn looks new & Sleep Inn was supposed to open in 2010.

Actually - think our HIEX is now the Econolodge - evidently the Clarion/comfort/sleep chain is big in that area.

As pp mentioned aside from getting a hotel room ahead of time, make sure to get your tour tickets as well. As we learned to our regret they do sell out. We waited until the morning of our arrival and at opening were only able to get tix for the simplest tour - "discovery tour". The really cool tours were sold out and had been for a couple of days. You can order the tix online here http://www.recreation.gov/tourList.do?parkId=77817&contractCode=NRSO
