A few days ago Kevin posted a positive review of the Mamma Mia movie. I was wondering if anyone had seen the stage show/musical. It's coming to Pittsburgh this fall, and we were thinking about picking up tickets. Is the musical like the movie? Better, worse? Thanks!

Haven't seen the movie but we really enjoyed the musical. Had us dancing in our seats and singing along.

Can only comment on the stage production. Saw it in Toronto. It was good. Not great but ok. I am a guy and I took my mom....she loved it! Me, :confused3 not so much

We've seen both. Would say they are about equal good fun & very entertaining, unless you absolutely hate ABBA music. But even then, you have to know they almost make fun of about half the songs...the comic twist they put on the lyrics is great fun.

Saw the Broadway Across America (road show) last year, and saw the movie opening weekend. LOVED both (50-somethings...we grew up with ABBA music!) Our 20 yr. old daughter has also seen both and enjoyed them very much too.

Movie is wonderful fun...most of the guys in it can't sing, but they try anyway. The women can all sing (Meryl Streep sings very, very well...surprise!) It's not oscar-winning movie, but funny, entertaining & lots of just plain fun with absolutely spectacular scenery (the background of Mediterranean blue sea in nearly every scene...awesome-it's almost worth the price of the ticket just for the location filming.)

The play is also great fun...staging, costumes & everything was very well done. We had very low expectations...only reason we were going was because we had tickets included in our season subscription...ended up loving the play.

My mom saw both the movie and the play....she loved, loved the play, she liked the movie too, but she thinks she would have liked it better if she hadn't seen the play, of course she thought the play was much better.

Liked the live show very much....loved the movie.

Filming on location made a fun story a mini vacation. Greece looks beautiful.

The show has been a world wide hit for 10 years for a reason.

It's fun entertainment, hummable songs, not too heavy, good choreography.

Saw MM on Broadway over the July 4 weekend and DH & I both loved it! :cool1: I didn't grow up with ABBA but for reasons neither I nor my gfs understand, I  their tunes! I was surprised DH liked it as much as he did. The show was a great time and we were standing singing and dancing along at the end of it; I'd definitely recommend it! :thumbsup2

BTW, for those not familiar with the plot, it's not really a story for children. There's nothing obscene in it obviously but there is one line. Some folks in the row in front of us had to fend off their young DD's questions ("What's *jacu******?" :scared1: during the show while the audience members in front of them hushed them to be quiet) :scared:

DH is being a sweetie and taking me to see the movie this w/end. I'll update after I've seen it. We're not Meryl Streep fans so we'll see how it pans out.

cheers,
:flower3:

we saw Mamma Mia on broadway years ago on Broadway I hated it I wanted to jump off the balcony!!! but I know I am in the minority when it comes to this play everyone else I know that has seen it absolutely loves it and thinks I am crazy!

Now that I've seen the movie (and loved it), I want to see the play. I saw the movie with girlfriends and we had a blast. I am a huge Meryl Streep fan, so the movie was even more enjoyable (for me).

I have seen it 2x on Broadway. I LOVED it. IMHO, it is much better than the movie. The stage cast sang circles around the movie cast. I can't comment on the traveling show version. I've found that traveling shows do not hold a candle to broadway shows, so I never go to those anymore.

I'm a purist. I like shows in their orginal form. (I did see the movie and enjoyed it. Not nearly as much as the stage show. But I love the songs and the background is beautiful.)

i went to go see this twice at the ciniema its just a feel good movie and we are planning to go down to london to see it on stage

I will say I was plesantly surprised with the movie. I LOVED the musical when it came here and could see it several more times. It is a feel good musical. :dance3: It is a feel good show. you leave there feeling amused and uplifted and really it's just a dance in your seat kindof show. The movie is fabulous in it's own right. It is not because the vocals are so great although Meryl Streep surprised me especially wit hehr rendition of Winner takes it all really moving as really only she could pull off!. It is probably my favorite stage show I have seen so far. (CATS, RENT, George M, South PAcific...etc Loved them, but there is somethign about leaving a show touched and singing along. It is such a sweet show. I wil say it will probably lose it's place as my favorite when WICKED gets here next spring. That is some FABULOUS music and I cannot wait to see it!

I just saw the movie today. I loved it. I didn't grow up on ABBA either but I knew most of the music and it was so fun.

I go see the traveling show here in Cleveland next Tues. I can't wait. It's my birthday present from my mom and I'm pumped. I love musicals though.

I have seen the movie 5 times already.....LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!!!::love: worship: OMG, I have never had so much fun watching a movie, it never slows down, one song after another, its just a FANTASTIC AND FUN movie!!!!

Saw the musical here in Toronto and loved it. It was really fun to watch and you couldn't help get up from your seat and dance!

I went to see the musical in Boston. We planned a girls night out and 10 of us went to see it. We had so much fun. We were all dancing in the aisle at the end.
