Tell them you will wait, and be prepared to do so.
Then you have the best, most magical location enjoying your dinner when Spectromagic goes by, and can eat dessert while waiting for the fireworks.
You will be comfortable, not sitting on a curb, staking out your spot for 30 minutes. They don't let people run out on the porch and stand in front of you. It is the best. So the food is not so great, but the location is.

Along the same lines... We do always book Tony's for their latest lunch seating- usually 2:45ish. We ask for a porch table and there's never many people there. You can sit there and have a great late lunch and view of the 3:00pm parade! We've done this every trip for the last 5 years. You can't beat the view and seating.
That being said... I'm just always disappointed with my meal. My husband and kids are satisfied with the spaghetti and meatballs and the special ice cream for dessert, but I LOVE the food at Mama's!
You just have to decide between a great experience for the kids (parade & fun) vs. great food for the adults.
How about doing both!?!?

We ate at both last week. I was a little leery about Tony's because of some of the bad reviews on here, but we enjoyed it. We thought the food was pretty good. I think the food at Mama Melrose's was better, but I'd be happy to go back to either one. I'd pick whatever works with your park schedule.

Mama Melrose hands down. The food is good and tasty, the services has always been above par and the atmosphere is great. We eat there every trip or so.

We have only had one experiance at Tony's and I will never step foot in there again. The food was bad, cold when it shouldn't be, service was slow and horrible and the place was overcrowded and noisy. Worst TS experience we have ever had.

Oooh that's actually a hard question for me since we love both. I guess it depends on which one fits in better with your schedule. They both have always been great for us!

We went to Mama Melroses in Sept which was highly recommended by a friend who went last year. IT WAS NOT GOOD AT ALL! Seriously, we sat there thinking if we booked the wrong place. This friend happened to go a few weeks after us and said the exact same thing that the food went down hill. I will not go back to MM's but we are trying Tony's when we go back in a few weeks I figure you have to try it before you say you don't like it!

Tonys isnt that bad for park food, I ate there a few years ago, had the salmon very good, I forget what else I had but I would eat there again

Not exactly a clash of the Titans, but Mama's is probably better since you can get a beer or wine with dinner.

After reading lots of not-so-good reviews of Tony's, I decided to try for a walk-up lunch in October and check it out for myself. I REALLY enjoyed it!! The food was really good, service was excellent, and the restaurant is lovely. Haven't tried MM but wouldn't hesitate to dine at Tony's again!!!!

Mama Melrose is the better Choice IMO. Tony's is good, but I would do Mama Melrose as a first choice.

Which is better? Neither! I had the toughest piece of steak I've ever tried to cut from Tony's. I also had the most disgusting chicken parm I've ever been served at Mama Melroses. Prior to the last time I'd eaten at MM, I'd had pretty good food and service. I'd ordered the pork marsala before and it was good. I'd also had the chicken parm twice before and it was good as well. It was never anything great, but it was good. Last December, we ate at MM and the chicken parm was absolutely abysmal. I was served a cold chicken breaded cutlet with tomato paste - not sauce - and cheese.

With all the choices for better dining in WDW, I'd go anywhere but those two places.

They are very similar, but I would choose Tony's. After reading so many bad reviews, we were hesitant to keep our ADR, but we ended up really enjoying it! My DH had short ribs and a carrot puree that was delicious! The service was wonderful and we really enjoyed our dinner there. Mama's had great service too, but I would rather eat another Tony's meal than what I had a Mama's.

We haven't tried Tony's so I can't compare the two but we do always make a ressie for MM. I always get their chicken parm and have never had a bad experience with it. This last time I asked to substitute the red sauce for alredo and they did. We've eaten there on each of our last four or five trips and looking forward to eating there again in May. We've also always had really good service there.

We have always enjoyed Tonys but after dining at Mama's last month we prefer that...the bread is better, love having a drink with dinner, the shrimp pasta dish was incredible BUT I will tell you that Tony's calamari is a million times better than Mama's
