Separate the band.
Smooth edges with a nail file.

I separated it by removing the gray outer piece, it's easy and that way you reduce the width a bit as well. I haven't tried or seen someone cut off any extra length, however I feel as though it would create sharper, more awkward edges.

I did cut off extra length on mine. I was afraid it would be a bit tight if I took off the outside (it's not). The edge I cut was very smooth and it made the band fit much better.

For little bitty wrists, take the thing off like the picture shows. For in betweens, cut it then file it down so there aren't sharp edges.

I have silly small wrists (5 3/4 in) I take off the outside per instructions and wear it almost on the last hole and it fits fine.

I removed the gray outside portion on both my children's bands last trip. They were 11 and 4 and removing that worked for both of them.

I have extremely tiny wrists, so I pulled off the extra portion as instructed by the box/internet. It fit perfectly and was not too tight at all, even though I still had to put it on one of the closest settings since it was still too big! The edges were wavy looking, but soft and did not itch/scratch/irritate me at any point.

I took the grey portion off my my kids' and my band last trip. It worked perfectly.

I did this exactly. The emery board worked wonders with the rough edges after pulling the "border" off the magic band.
