making reservations and using DDP

Ok, So i'm new to the disney dining plan. I had booked all of my ADR over a month ago, and i'm still check availability for the ones i still want but haven't been able to get.
However i have just noticed that there is an option when you book online that says "would like to use your Disney Dining Plan for this meal, " I have a DDP but I haven't used this option when i booked all my reservations.

Should I have? Have i made a big mistake?
I just thought you told them when you show up for your reservations?

Please help!

The dining plan is not relevant to restaurant reservations unless you are booking CRT or one of the three dinner shows. While these are prepaid in full if you are not on the dining plan, you will have to leave only a credit card number as a reservation guarantee if you are.

Otherwise, you can just say when you get there that you are on the dining plan.
