I am going to be making my own various camp signs using my Dremel.

My question is on the painting. If any of you make your own, what do you cover the wood with so the paint does not soak into the wood and run. Would a primer work? or should I use like a vanish. What do you do to make the signs more water proof, what products.

We had ours made by a man who visits the local fairs. He uses a router free hand too! You guys must be very talented!

He routers out the wood and then sprays it with black. He wipes off the top before it dries and it stays in the routed letters. Then he sands the top down and then he sprays it with a clear lacquer.

Hope this helps! Good Luck!

I know what your talking about.

What I had in mind, was just cut outs of say animals, etc, that I can put up around the site, with diff sayings like Happy Camping etc

At the risk of sounding like a total blundering idiot...where do you put these signs? I did follow the links and saw some but not exact sure what you do with them. I'm assuming they are markers for your camp site but is there a place to hang them or do you put them on a post? Intriquing.

usually the ones I seen have just wooden stakes attached that can be pounded into the ground.

I have seen alot of campers have the signs that KM mentioned, very creatively hung up, either off awnings, or what looks like those small black iron garden flag holders. Since I am planning on being at FW during Halloween, I wanted to make some Halloween decorations.

Cool! I followed some links in another thread and I looked like they needed to be hung so I wasn't sure if people build posts or what. Cute idea.
