making a reservation - when do they take your points?

Hi again - this board is great!

Looking at a June UY contract. It would come with 2010's points, and 2011's would come in June. Now, to use 2010's, I'd have to use by June 2011 or bank by Feb 2011, correct?

BUT, to make a reservation for next fall (when we want to go) at my home resort at 11 months (would be this month) - would we have to use the banked points or borrow 2011's points? The question is, to make a reservation prior to when your points load for your next use year, does it require borrowing points even if you're not vacationing until during the next use year?

Your points don't "drop" into your account on the first day of your Use Year. They are already in your account available for use, with a set of "use by" dates associated with them.

Your June 2010 points are good for stays from 6/1/2010 to 5/31/2011
Your June 2011 points are good for stays from 6/1/2011 to 5/31/2012
Your June 2012 points are good for stays from 6/1/2012 to 5/31/2013
and so on through the last full year of your contract

You can move points back one year by banking them during the first 8 months of your Use Year or forward one year by borrowing them at the time you need them to make a reservation. For example if you bank some of your June 2010 UY points they will become valid for stays from 6/1/2011-5/31/2012.

If you want to book a stay for Nov 2011 at your home resort using home resort points, you can do so this month. You need points that are valid for stays from 6/1/2011 to 5/31/2012 so your options are to use June 2010 points that you have banked into your June 2011 UY and/or June 2011 UY points and/or June 2012 UY points that you borrow into your June 2011 UY.

Everything is based on what UY your travel will happen, not when you call.

So, with a June UY and a fall 2011 trip, you would be able to use points which are elibigle for travel during your 2011 UY.

That would include banked 2010 UY points, 2011 UY points, and borrowed 2012 UY points.

When you call, they will look to see what you have and go from there. If you wanted to call right now for that trip, you would have to bank the 2010 UY points first before they can be used.

But, MS will typically use banked points first before touching current UY points. However, it is always a good idea to remind them that you want to do it that way.
