My DD is 14 and has not yet started wearing makeup, other than loose powder and lip gloss. She has struggled with acne for 2 years and it is finally starting to improve. i would like to get her a nice eyeshadow pallette but can't/ won't spend $50 on Urban Decay naked pallette (I don't spend near that much on my own makeup). Any recommendations for good neutral shade pallettes, and/ or other makeup suggestions?

Thanks!
Amy

I really like the bare minerals neutral eyes kit. It's $29 and you may be able to get a discount. I think I bought mine from beauty.com. But it comes with a brush, two really pretty shadows, an eyeliner, and primer. It also has directions. At 38 I'm finally figuring makeup out (out of necessity:)

You can try the Hard Candy brand. It used to be in high end department stores in the 90s(when i was a teenager), but now it's available at Walmart and the prices are good. I like their mascara, even though I'm an adult, lol. They market toward teens and have a lot of bright colors, but they have neutrals, too, and the packaging is cute and fun.

editing to add...the sephora brand stuff is good too. High quality and less expensive.

I would say if she has acne problems (which i do as well) go with Clinique. I KNOW its a high brand, but it has a good wear time and it doesn' effect my acne 9i get pinples on my eyelids - OUCH!)

YES< it will eb pricy, but its better to go with a higher value makeup than an cheaper one that may cause more problems.

Maybe go with yoru daughter and let her get a makeover at the counter and then give her "X" amount to spend or give her a (homemade) gift certificate for a mother/daughter day to go to the makeup counters and to go out and have lunch.

Maybelline has a Nude pallette that looks nice. I am getting teenage niece Netrogena pressed powder foundation. they have one for acne prone skin. Also a primer. And I am getting at CVS so if we need to pick another shade or she doesn't like it we can return it.

It's funny you mention Urban Decay naked palette - it's what DD(19) wants for Christmas and boy did I get sticker shock when I looked it up!

Even at my age my acne still flares up with most liquid concealers. I'm a huge fan of Bare Minerals, but it can be pricey too. I found IQ Minerals to work just as well and it doesn't cost as much. You can get a "trial" package for about $15 with shipping. It lasts about a month and if DD likes it then get the full size version. You can find Bare Minerals and IQ Minerals on Amazon.

My teens started with an inexpensive palette of neutrals, Sonia Kashuk from Target. I did break down and get them Naked palettes last year and now I use the Target makeup. It's actually pretty good.

There are also Naked Basics palettes from Urban Decay that are smaller and more reasonably priced.

I bought DD15 the Naked Palette for her birthday. It is expensive, but it has lasted a long time and she loves it. Would you consider getting it as a Christmas gift? If you are a platinum member at Ulta, the new 20% coupon works on the palettes except for the On the Run. There is a Naked Basics palette that is $29.

Otherwise, I like Clinique eye shadows as a PP suggested. I also like Mary Kay.

LOL! I was going to suggest an Urban Decay Naked palette! :rotfl2:

Take into consideration that the Naked palettes come with 12 shadows plus a dual-ended shadow brush. The brush itself retails for $20, but assuming you'd go buy a generic brush somewhere for $10, it would still make each eye shadow only about $3 each. It's actually a great value.

I just bought Naked 1 for myself. I LOOOOOOOOOVE it! This is a palette that you can actually use every single color. Most palettes have a couple of colors you never end up using much, but the possibilities are endless with Naked palettes. I wanted one palette that would work for all of the natural eye looks I wanted, plus be able to produce a more smokey eye look when needed. This is totally it. One of the colors even works perfect as a highlighter so you literally don't even need anything else. Yesterday I used one of the darker colors along my lash line instead of eyeliner.

Department store brand shadows blend so much better than stuff you can get at Walmart which I think is important for beginners. It's hard enough learning how to apply makeup properly in the first place...it would be even worse teaching her with greens & purples that don't blend seamlessly! She can start very light with the Naked palette, so natural that you wouldn't even think she was wearing eye makeup and work her way up as she feels more comfortable. I want to buy Naked 2 and 3 also.

Check out NYX Cosmetics, here is the link, they have great makeup sets, their eyeshadow quality exceeds MAC, their lip gloss and other products are fabulous. I picked up the gift set of eyeshadows, face and lip for $12.99 at Pharmaplus in Canada. YOu can buy NYX in the USA, the merchandise is made in the Netherlands. If you go into makeupalley. com, you will find the ladies on that board love NYX and so do I!

Dd13 and dd11 share the naked palette (required by dance school), and it's great. They want to buy one for dd18, who has only owned cheap ones(and doesn't wear a lot of makeup). You can achieve a nice natural look, or a nice smokey eye.

For a starter makeup set, I'd probably go with a basic palette from E.l.f. or something similarly priced. Until you have some idea of what you're doing with makeup, I don't think there's any need to spend big money on a Naked palette (which I love and highly recommend!).

Thanks so much for the input and recommendations! As soon as I have some shopping time, I am going to look online at some of the things you all recommended and make a decision- maybe something for me, too!
