Makeup - Budget or Splurge?

I splurge on skin care and foundation products...the rest not so much

I use Origins skin care line and am liking it so far. I used to use MK which I adored but now the test on animals and I can't buy that stuff anymore :sad2: I used Clinque way back in the day and found it too abrasive. For foundation I like the mineral powder from Origins but they discontinued it so I'm in the market for a new one. I tried Bare Minerals once and that was enough for me. I had a free appointment at Ulta to have it put on for and matched and it looked awful!!!!!:scared1::scared1: Felt awful too

As for the rest of my goodies...I like Physician's formula and I still have some old MK shadows I'm using up.

make an appointment at Ulta or Sephora and get some samples. Also hit the mall one afternoon and try out some counters and see what you like.

I use the hourglass mineral veil primer, followed by NARS Sheer Glow Foundation, finishing with Makeup For Ever HD loose powder. I swear by the Peter Thomas Roth Skincare line. My skin is so clear. When I used the drugstore brands, it always looked wrong. Good makeup is worth every penny :)

I use Bare Minerals because I have to use a gluten-free makeup. I like it- use the whole product line :goodvibes. Ulta sells it for a good price.

ok just got in from going to 2 different Sephora's at my Mall - they have one in JC Penney

The first one i went into was inside of the JCPenney - i told the girl how i wanted a natural feel etc. she did not recommend BE but a Lancome Liquid - i hated it.. she said it looked good - so anyway i said let me walk around a bit - met my friends for dinner in the mall and they also hated it.. made me look very pale!

One of my friends loves BE as well anyway after dinner went into the bigger Sephora and she didn't like the makeup on me either - she recommended a tinted moisturizer - she is not a lover of BE but i asked to try it - another customer in the store also loved the BE anyway, i was happy with it so i bought the $60 kit - i also got a sample of the Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer i'll try!

if you get the chance, try smashbox halo. i've used just about every drugstore, dept store, and specialty brand foundation in my quest for the perfect one, and halo is definately it!
i still have some bare minerals left, so use it if i run low on halo (i get asked if i'm feeling sick on BE days lol - BE has a powdery, fake look on me). halo doesn't settle into lines, is less drying, and although has a higher initial price tag (about $60), lasts about 2x as long as BE, and travels well. btw, every person i know who has tried halo once never went back to BE - there is a big difference.
i use studio gear brushes (guaranteed forever), retain their shape, softness,, and never shed. my favorite mascara is still covergirl outlast :confused3, no other comes close. i use various brand powder shadows, but prefer studio gear cream liners and pencils for their staying power.
if you use a primer, many have previously stated that monistat antichaffing gel has the exact same ingredrients (google it - sounds weird, but is indeed true), for a much lower price.
hth :)

I forgot about Halo. I actually use it over my foundation with a big brush vs. Bare Minerals style. But sometimes I will just use Halo too for those great natural skin days. I got my first Halo when I bought a starter kit for Smashbox HD and have been using it for probably a year and a half now.

Cheap here.

Revlon lipstick for less than a dollar when on CVS sale.

Mascara free from CVS. (Don't know or care which brand)

Neutrogena or Cover Girl tinted moisturizer.

OPI nail polish for less than a dollar on sale.

I've used both, drug store brands and high end brands. I wasn't the biggest fan of MAC's foundation or powder. I prefer the Maybelline mousse foundation, and it's a lot cheaper.

For eye shadows, I like to splurge. My favorite it the Naked palette by Urban Decay. It stays on all day and night. I also like MAC's paint pots as a base for eye shadows and pigments. It really makes the colors pop.

I use Arbonne - all natural - no chemicals, especially no mineral oil. On the expensive side - but a little goes a long way. Just came out with a new line of eye shadows, lipstick, etc.

i used the BE yesterday - it seemed to make my face a bit itchy? i think tonight i'll try the sample of the LM Tinted moisturizer and see how that feels!

I did like the look of the BE so i'll see will try both throughout the week and see if i will keep the BE or exchange it!

If you haven't been wearing makeup, most makeup is going to make your face feel "different" at first. And if you are in a cold part of the country - right now your skin is dry. Some will feel different than others - I do get "itchy" from powdered foundations and I get "thick/heavy" with liquid ones. A tinted moisterizer might be right up your alley for now - you could - if you like the BE - hang onto it for the days/nights when you want to be more "made up."

I use a tinted primer/moisturizer for my "no makeup" days. I use the BE for my "going to work/professional" days. I use a Lancome liquid foundation with fairly heavy coverage for my "going out in the evening/getting dressed up" days.

It's the bismuth in the BE that's making you itchy. People who are allergic have used Everyday Minerals. They have a sampler kit to try- bismuth free!

Good luck with LM, I really like it. Also if you have an Aveda store, check out their tinted moisturizers, they feel good, there are a lot of shades to choose from and they are less pricey than the Laura Mercier.

BE Matte also doesn't have bismuth oxychloride... Personally bismuth Doesn't make me itch, but it does make me break out. Itchiness could just be from dry skin.

i went to Sephora again and got a sample of the Smashbox BB tinted moisturizer - i like how it felt - it has everything in one - primer - antiaging etc and spf of 35!

I went to Sephora yesterday, returned the Bare Essentials bought the Smashbox BB and a brush - expensive but i'm happy - i love the feel of tinted moisturizer and its a good color match - i do use the Tinted Mineral Veil that i have from the summer over it!

I'm not a foundation girl at all anymore esp not since I now live in FL never loose all my tan....yes I'm a sun lover most days out there from 9-5 in the summer winter too when the weather is nice....doing all the wrong things to my skin I know.

On the very rare occassion I do wear foundation I do love the monistat smoothing gel for a primer. I use it under my eye make up that I usually do wear daily.

I don't use foundation for several reasons.

1.Not found one I like in years.
2. I seem to be a different shade almost weekly.
3. No matter what moisterizer or primer ect it seems to settle in my wrinkles.
4. Hot flashes an foundation does not mix well.

I've tried the expensive stuff over the years an usually did not like them as well as the cheap drug store stuff. Did not look any better ir wear better than the cheap stuff some of them wore much worse esp lipsticks an nail polishes.

I wash my face with the dove disposable wash cloths with the soap on them cut into 4ths. NO MESS NO FUSS then rinse an wipe face with a wash cloth. Use my sea breeze to get the rest of the dirt an grime off face. Followed by cheap moisterizer.

Pink mascera, the monistat soothing gel for primer. My eye shadows are very very cheap stuff right now from kits that I bought right after christmas for 1.50 each at CVS they look good an wear good all day some of them I use wet some I use dry.

Loreal lipstick stuff that wears a very long time.

Got to say that over the years some of the best lipsticks I've worn has been from wet an wild.

I used to be a Mary Kay girl, but one of my friends reccomended elf cosmetics to me a couple of years ago. http://www.eyeslipsface.com/ I buy a light shade of liquid foundation and darken it up with a slightly darker mineral powder layer. This means I get to use the same foundation year round and use more or less mineral powder based on my tan. Their blush is great and I love the four shade pallets of brightening eye shadow. I don't like their mascera or nail poish and usually purchase those at the drug store. The best thing about elf is that most items are $1. I can get a full make-up bag for $20 or less :)

Some drugstore stuff isn't too bad. Revlon lip products are amazing, and surprisingly so are Wet 'n' Wild eyeshadows (especially 8 pan palettes). But I have yet to find a nice drugstore blush or foundation. Foundation is highly personal and I recommend going to Sephora and testing things out for yourself, but Laura Mercier's tinted moisturizer, Clinique's Almost Makeup and Make Up For Ever's Face & Body foundations all tend to get good reviews. For blush, I like MAC, NARS, and Tarte.
