My 11-year old is starting to wear makeup. I don't mind that she's wearing it since she's in 6th grade but I do mind that she's using mine. I would like to buy her some basics as her own for Hanukkah but I am at a loss of which brands to buy her. Should I just stick with Cover Girl from Walgreens? Or should I go somewhere else where they will help her pick out colors? My mom brought me to Merle Norman as a teen but I won't do that ... too old! I use Origin's from Macy's but I think that's also probably a little too "old" for a tween. I don't want to spend a fortune but I also don't want to throw my money away on junk, KWIM.

I ordered this for my dd for Christmas, she's almost 13. If you consider this, check groupon.com. They are always running get $20 for Soap.com for $10, andif you register now before you purchsae, in a few days they may send you a $10 code for your first groupon purchase so you could get the $20 code for free (thats what I did). Not everyone gets the free $10 when they register, i think its pretty random.

I'd do that. Give her a gift card for the MAC counter.

Does she have sensitive skin or allergies? If so then I would lean towards almay at the drug stores. Or clinique in the department stores. She could certainly experiment with one of those huge gift boxes of make up that come out at the holidays. I think I remember seeing that ulta had one from smashbox this week. It would allow her to at least play around with colors on her own to figure out what pallate works for her skin tone.

Not sure if animal testing is an important issue for your DD, but if you want to stick to drugstore brands, go with Wet N' Wild (CHEAP too!) or Revlon ;)

ETA: I meant that neither of those brands participate in animal testing of their products.

When my daughter began wearing makeup I made her an appt at the Clinique counter in Macy's. They taught her how to apply it and showed her only colors appropriate for a young girl. It worked out very well as she is almost 20 and has never worn "too much" makeup and kept a natural look.

Has really great prices and often offers 50% off. Be aware they do send frequent emails if you sign up to get email offers. I use their mineral make up and will likely get that for my dd when she is old enough. I had really bad breakouts growing up and even am still sensitive to certain products. The mineral mu they sell never breaks me out ever. I ran out last month before I had a chance to order more & picked up something at the store which immediately made my skin go crazy.

Go to the Clinique counter at your favorite department store. Have one of the Clinque beauty advisors help her learn about skin care and the right make up for her.

My DD15 doesn't wear a lot of makeup. But when she first started we went with cheap drug store brands. They spend a lot of time experimenting and washing it off and starting over. I would just buy her any of the deals from Walgreens for mascara and let her see which one she liked. . .she settled with one from Rimmel. For eyeshadow and pencil, Almay has a line that is based on your eye color. I love that eyeliner, so I bought her a few of the "for green eyes" sets. When she started wearing foundation, we experimented with the drug store brands until she found one from Neutrogena that worked for her. She rarely wears blush, so I let her wear mine from Mac. It wouldn't make sense to buy her her own.

I say experiment with the drug store stuff. I did also consider buying her some from ELF. . it's cheap and they have many sets. Ultimately, I never bought any though, so I don't know about the quality.

Ulta is great and they will help you.

I have some excess Bare Minerals that I have given my daughter. She's in 8th grade and still not really into makeup.

I agree with the taking your daughter to Clinique counter....they really stress proper care of your face and the removal of the makeup! Also, most of them teach that less is more as far as makeup and colors! Good luck!

My friend sells Mary Kay and a few moms that buy from her, had a "girl's party" when our DDs who were mostly 13 and 14 started wearing make-up. She has teens and did a great job making the girls look natural and not made up. At our school I see too many younger girls with the dark eyeliner, shadow, etc and no clue had to apply! The cleansing helped clear her skin and she loves the minerals.

I worked for Merle Norman for years in college. It's been a while but they do have a lot of newer products. This being said, I don't think you need to spend the money on the department store products unless you just choose to. The drug store brands are just fine. I imagine she's not wearing anything to heavy so just pick her up something she likes. I know when I was young I didn't take care of my products, shared with friends, etc all the things you aren't supposed to do. One drugstore, CVS maybe, let's you bring it home and if you don't like it they take it back. I personally like cover girl and maybelline products for young girls. They are light and reasonably priced. She's super cute. Can't imagine she needs too much help!

I agree about Clinique- or somewhere that will teach her the importance of facial cleansing. I grew up with severe acne (and still occasionally suffer from cystic acne) and a cleaning regime is so importance once you start wearing makeup and going through puberty. I use proactive, but love Clinique makeup! Have fun keeping her out of your makeup- my daughter is only 3, and I catch her in mine! :goodvibes

DD will be 12 tomorrow and I went to Sephora and picked her up a makeup kit that has pretty much everything except foundation (which I don't think she needs at this age). She's been playing around with the different colors. I don't have to worry about keeping her out of my makeup, because I really don't have any.

My girls are the same age and just starting to wear makeup. I help apply mascara and eyeliner if going to a dance or party but they do not wear it daily. They both have very nice skin and can skip powder and foundation. Right now it's only eye shadow, lip shimmer and sometimes blush.

Burt's Bees Lip Shimmers (stick not tube) are the best!!! They provide perfect coverage. I use it daily and save my MAC lipstick for going out now. It's the one thing my girls will carry with them to reapply so if they lose a tube or it gets stolen it's only $5 to replace.

Everything else in their makeup cases are drugstore finds so far. The pixi line someone else linked has nice colors and we've found sets clearanced at Target. Covergirl blush and BonneBell eyeshadow are their main staples though. ~I just ran upstairs and tested the BonneBell shadows in my arm. If I were buying for myself I would consider it a junk makeup, the colors are pretty sheer but not transparent like kiddie makeup. It's great for tweens but not for adults and teens who can control blending. I hope that makes sense.

Girls that age tend to play with makeup when friends over, we bought my niece a variety of brands and colors and put together a makeup kit for her to experiement and play with.

we went with bare minerals from Ulta and have been happy with it. Its funny, she was really into make-up in middle school, but now in high school, she would rather sleep later!

My daughter is also 11 and I plan to take her to the Clinique counter in Macys or to the Mac counter. If i tell her not to wear certain colors because they do not look right on her she won't listen to me. If one of the professionals tell her what the appropriate colors are for her and how to apply the makeup she will definetely take their advice. I am not too happy with her wanting to wear makeup at such a young age but if she must at least I dont want her walking around like a clown.
