This thread is mainly gonna be for girls, but I guess guys can answer if they want...

I know there was already a thread about make up, but I need some questions answered.

I'm 13 and in the 8th grade. Many of my friends/other girls at my school have started wearing make up and I have yet to become interested until now. So, my mom has agreed to buy some make up--not the cheap kind, Clinique. My questions are:

What age were you when you started wearing make up?
What brand did you start out on?
How did you learn to apply it?
Any tips?

Thanks.

What age were you when you started wearing make up?
I was in 3rd grade... but I was also In theatre. I dont' think I started wearing makeup out or to school until 6th maybe but even today (8th grade) I wear VERY MINIMAL just some eyeshadow, coverup and lipgloss
What brand did you start out on?
All different brands. I still mix and match
How did you learn to apply it?
I grew up in the theatre. Watching the adults apply my own as well as others makeup basically taught me. Now I do my own, and some of the little girls'
Any tips?
Less is More... unless you're in theatre but that's a totally different makeup story. If you like what you see when you put it on... if it makes you Pop then use it... if you don't then don't wear it. Don't pick dark shades if you have fair skin like blues and greens. Pick something close to you skin tone. Claire's has amazing makeup pallates that have 4 different color choices with 4 different shades each that give a fading effect as you apply it. Shiny makeup (glitter, gold/bronze eyeshadow) always makes me feel confident.

I was 12.
I just tried random things.
I learned to apply it on my own, with practice.
You can't wear bright make-up on tv, it washes you out and makes you look anemic.

xD

What age were you when you started wearing make up? I started "experimenting" when I was about ten. I only wore minimal amounts of lip gloss rarely on the weekends then.

What brand did you start out on? Nothing widely known.

How did you learn to apply it? My mother taught me.

Any tips? I know this is a give away, but "Don't Overdo It!" Seriously. Some people take advantage of the eyeliner. Don't. Wear make-up that enhances your features. If a certain color of, lets say lip gloss, doesn't look right on you (whether you notice it yourself, or a close friend makes a comment), don't wear it. If you don't like the way something looks, ask for a trusted friend's opinion. Seriously, no one needs pounds and pounds of make-up to cover their faces.

Another tip of mine is to not try all of it out at once. (This is what my mom encouraged me to do.) I started out with just lip gloss. That's the only kind of make-up I wore for two years. Then, I bought mascara and eyeliner. That was last year. Now, if I need it, I'll wear cover up and eyeshadow. I never wear all five at once. (To prevent the clown face of doom.)

I suggest, that if this works for you, wear no more than three kinds a day. For example, one day lip gloss, mascara, and cover up. (I do this most days.) The next, wear cover up, eyeliner and mascara, etc.

i just started a month or two ago so i dont know much im alowed too where prety much any thing but i only where base and what ever the powder stuff is called eye shaddow and lip gloss i dont use masscara becuse one i dont want too deel with keeping it nice and two i make a mess with it

The only times I've worn makeup were last Halloween and my first concert at the end of orchestra camp, and both times it was eyeliner (once gold and once blue). The gold was at camp when another girl let me use her eyeliner and applied it because I had no idea which color to use, and the blue 'cause I was dressed as Captain Amelia. So... I really can't help you much. Sorry. :S

What age were you when you started wearing make up? As soon as I starting dancing for Ballet, age 3. But not nomarlly till Um 7th/8th grade but I don't even usually wear it now, just on special occasions.
What brand did you start out on? Lacome and Loreal, now I use Sophera [sp?]
How did you learn to apply it? Mom
Any tips? Dont wear it to heavy like alot of girls do. And not EVERYONE looks good in black eyeliner loaded up like its gonna run out. -cough cough girls at my school-

What age were you when you started wearing make up? -- My sophomore year, when I started to date my current boyfriend.

What brand did you start out on? -- The cheapy stuff. But "I've since moved to Clinique, because they have the perfect foundation for my skin coloring. Everything else though, I buy at like Target or Walmart.

How did you learn to apply it? - By watching my friends who were already wearing it. I kinda knew how already though.

Any tips? - Be creative with it. You don't have to look like everyone else. Just don't go over the top. Have fun!!!

I dont wear makeup except for lipgloss.
My mom doesnt want me to wear makeup, she says I'm still too little.
I'm 15.
I dont know how to put on makeup because nobody has ever taught me. :)

That's me right now. Especially the not knowing how to put it on part.

Thanks everyone, it really does help.

I started around 7th/8th grade.

My mother taught me how to do the basics. I picked up the rest with experiments.

I wear, daily: bronzer, blush, eyeliner and mascara. I go for the natural look. I'm tanner, so instead of foundation, i just use bronzer.

The brands I use is signature A. It's the 40+ collection. It's great for my skin (I rarely break out) and it lasts for months.
Clinque is very good. I have some stuff from them. I recommend them when you are starting off.
My eyeliners are just from everywhere. I have about every color.

Maybe you could go to Macy's and have the girls at the makeup counter give you some professional tips, show you how to apply it, and give the right color for your skin tone.

good luck!

Well as a lil girl and the oldest I was always trying it on or trying on my moms for the fun of it because she did it.
Then I attempted to be cool like ym friends dark eye liner and blah not for me.
Before I entered Highschool I went to Ulta and had my makeup done. The lady was so nice she showed me how to apply base foundation eyeliner different colors for my skin and eyes.
I use Urban Decay and it's wonderful.
Going and getting it done defiantly helped me out, beucase it looks natural, but still like I'm wearing something.

What age were you when you started wearing make up?
What brand did you start out on?
How did you learn to apply it?
Any tips?

i was in 6th grade.

I, too, started with Clinque. but i've moved on to many different makeup brands but i still use clinque foundation and concealor.

The makeup counter lady showed me how to apply. but i've learned other tricks from things i've read.

my tips:

make it look natural when it comes to concealor and foundation.
don't glob on stuff. it's gross.
use bronzer for a healthy glow if you haven't seen sun in awhile.
don't use disgusting eye shadow colors. (ie. lime green, fuscia, etc.)
go for a subtle tone that brings out your eye color.

What age were you when you started wearing make up?
Same as you, 8th grade.

What brand did you start out on?
CoverGirl, still on CG

How did you learn to apply it?
My mom. :)

Any tips?
Less is more. Don't overdo anything. Remember, the idea is to make you look good WITHOUT us being able to tell right away that you're wearing makeup.

What age were you when you started wearing make up?
I was about four when I dipped into my mom's make-up drawer, but I only started wearing make-up on an everyday basis when I was 12 or 13.

What brand did you start out on?
When I was younger, the crap from Claire's. But now I buy my cosmetics from this store called Faces and I generally buy the more expensive brands.

How did you learn to apply it?
Myself. Nobody ever really showed me how to do it, I just learned what does and does not look good on me.

Any tips?
Find out what colours look best on you because what looks good on one person, might not look good on you. Your skin type and hair colour will really determine which colours you can use. Oh, and Neutrals and browns look good on most people.
One coat of mascara is usually enough to look polished, as long as you touch it up half way through the day. I would definitely go for waterproof by the way.
One last thing: I have only ever seen green and blue eye shadow look good on one girl in my entire life. Most people can NOT pull those colours off at all.

Good luck with the new make-up! :)

What age were you when you started wearing make up? around 7th grade

What brand did you start out on? Cover Girl but now I wear a mix of different brands

How did you learn to apply it? Watching other people like my cousin, learning for myself (just experiment there's always soap and water)

Any tips? You may be temted but do not load on half a bottle of eye liner everyday!!! I hate it when like 3/4 of the girls in my school do this!! Errgghh! Go light wear tan, brown, neutral normally. Dont put on foundation, powder, blush, eye powder, mascara, eye liner nad lip stuff everyday. I mean come on we don't want to look like Stevie the Wonder Clown, now do we.....

I usually wear lip gloss, and mascara and a touch of eye liner most days. I rarely even bother with foundation or anything becasue (not bragging) I have good skin. I just put it on b/c without it somehow I feel naked and revealed??? I've probably bonded to much with my lip gloss....

What age were you when you started wearing make up? 13.
What brand did you start out on? maybeline/covergirl.
How did you learn to apply it? my mom.
Any tips? stare at something when you put on mascara.

I started wearing make up last year (8th grade).
I wear a mix of different brands.
I wear coverup, eyeliner, mascara, light brown eye shadow, and sometimes lipgloss.
Don't overdue it, make it look natural.
:]

I didn't start to wear it regularly until I was 13/14 But i still don't use it that much, it starts to be a hassle. i used to model so thats where I was taught how to put it on. I use all different stuff, but my favorite is bare minerals, its really light and good for your skin. tips? um don't put too much on, just enough to highlight the good features in your face.

What age were you when you started wearing make up? well I started wearing it to parties and stuff when I was about 12 but started wearing it regularly when I turned 14
What brand did you start out on? a mixture of different brands
How did you learn to apply it? I just learnt from myself! I made loads of bad mistakes when I first started wearing make-up but I've learnt from my mistakes. And I watch the way other people apply their make-up!!
Any tips? Seriously the best and probably most important tip is to always apply make up in good light!! Seriously for ages I was applying make-up in poor light and therefore I didn't blend my foundation properly and so I looked awful!! So always apply make-up in good light. I recommend a mirror which lights up, it really helps me blend my make-up well.
