If two people in your group want to ride one of the fastpass attractions, but the other two don't. you can get four fastpasses for that ride and the two that want two ride can go on twice and the other two can go on a non fastpass ride. Then all the tickets will be able to get a new fastpass at the same time later and the group can go on a fastpass ride together.
 
Yes you can get 4 FPs and use them two at a time.

Also you don't have to worry about the return time. I have only seen a few instances reported on this board of late FP's being rejected and it was mostly for the rides like Soring and TSM when they opened and super-duper popular.
