AS SOON AS YOU GET TO YOUR CABIN MAKE SURE YOU REQUEST NEW BLANKETS AND BEDSPREADS. WE WERE SO SICK AND I NOTICED THAT WHEN THEY WERE PREPPING THE CABINS FOR THE NEXT CRUISE THEY WERE ONLY STRIPPING THE SHEETS!! WITH THOSE SORT OF GERMS I WOULD DEFINETLY TAKE MORE PRECAUTIONS

Is this true? did anyone else see this?

I'm going to email Disney and give them my room number to make sure mine are switched.

Anyone know the disney policy???

Unfortunately, I think that is common in the hotel industry. That is why lots of times the blanket is enclosed in sheets, top and bottom.

Oddly though, when we were there they came in and took one drape, one privacy panel of the curtain and the bedspread from one of our rooms. Maybe all the larger items are changed out on a rotation?? They were replaced later in the day.

Have you ever asked that your spread and blankets be washed on a cruise? Were they happy to do it for you?

I saw it recommended on a morning show I believe from a travel expert some time ago, that the first thing you should do when checking into a hotel is have the bedspreads removed permanently from your room for the length of your stay, because they aren't cleaned between guests. I assume this is also the case on cruise ships, if it is stained they wash it, otherwise, they just make the bed with it. I have never done this, but I do not let my kids jump around or lay around on the bedspread when in hotels.

They completely REPLACED all of the bedding on the Magic when the ship was taken offline for week last November. I also saw complete bedding being bagged to be washed on our 12/7 cruise if someone was ill an a stateroom. I'm sure they take all necessary precautions to make the rooms as clean as possible and I personally do not worry about it.

BUT.... How often do you wash your comforters at home? In my house the sheets and blankets are washed weekly but I only wash the big bulky comforters every couple of months. Yes if Mike puked on it I would wash it but if not it is the sheets and blanket I am most concerned about. In our king size bed I have to take the duvet to a dry cleaner so that is not done except about four times a year. My point is... unless someone vomits on the bedspread I would personally not be too excited about lingering germs. At home I'm not... I mean you could really start to make yourself nuts, how do you know that the person in your room before you did not have AIDS and may have bled on the rug, should you not walk barefoot just in case. Germs are everywhere and that is why we have an immune system :) I for one would not want to have to wait until 6pm to get on board so they could wash every bedspread on the ship. I don't expect them to do more than I do at home, (now I also don't snuggle up on it- that is was the blanket and sheet are for it goes on the floor at night and stays there until the host makes the bed in the morning)
This whole Norwalk thing has so many people upset but if you look at it realistically you probably have slept with much worse germs when you were "young and stupid" and could only afford a cheap place at the beach with your friends. (or at least in my case-looking back at what I dwelled in at Cape Cod in my pre-married days is enough to give you nightmeres, BUT I never got any diseases) hope I did not get myself in trouble again....

It may not bother you to have someone elses germs but I have never felt such intense stomach pains and felt so sick as I did last Saturday on the Disney Wonder. We stayed in Orlando until Thursday because it would have been too difficult to travel with two small extremely ill children and an elderly mother who became ill on Monday. No one seemed overly concerned about our sickness on the cruise so I was afraid that the next people in our cabin would contract the same virus. If I am paying for a room and someone to clean it I would expect a higher level of cleanliness. After all when you have have "guests" at your home don't you make sure that all of the bedding in their room is clean. I wouldn't put them in my sons bed just hours after he had left it suffering with virile flu like symptoms.

I guess I would expect that after 7 days these items would be cleaned. Two sets (one cleaned while the ship is out by some service?)
I know there are places that do this for $10 any size comforter/spread. Seems like i'm paying for that?

I would be surprised if disney (after Nov) has not started a procedure.

"how do you know that the person in your room before you did not have AIDS and may have bled on the rug, should you not walk barefoot just in case."

I know you were only kidding, but it should be noted that the virus that causes AIDS is very fragile and can not live outside of the body. You can not catch AIDS in this manner.

I know it is scarey about the HIV and AIDS virus bit you can't get it from dried blood. So don't worry..you can go without socks ;)

Ewww gross!!!!!!!!!!! Now when I go anywhere I will take lysol spray and soak everything insite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That should kill at least something!! hahahaha

:bounce: :) ;) :D

Well, Ann... once every month or so... but then, I don't let complete strangers sleep on my bedding between those times either ;)

How do you know it came from the bedspreads? It could have just as easily come from something you touched elsewhere in the ship...or you could have been infected before you oarded and brought the virus on with you.

Yes I was kidding about the AIDS comment and really did not want to offend anyone I was just trying to lighten things up.
I fully understand and sympathize with you if you were ill and certainly would not want to get someone elses germs but I was just trying to put in in light that it would be impossible to sanatize everything. Even in a hospital they don't change out the curtains when someone dies in the room. We can not let fear of germs control our lives. Again sorry if I offended anyone it was not my intent, truely I was trying to lighten things up!

I'm with Ann here. I don't wash my comforters all that frequently, not even the one in my guest room. The sheets and blankets, yes, but not the spreads and comforters. I also remove the bedspread in any hotel room before bed and put it on the floor, so even if it had been cleaned b4 I got there, it's got floor dirt and germs on it pretty immediately. If you're really worried, just ask them to remove it for the duration of your cruise. Or spray it down with Lysol every day bc as soon as the cabin host touches it or sneezes in your room it's dirty again. I'm pretty confident DCL would clean the spread if they knew that someone had been ill in the room but that presumes that they are told.

I know this isn't exactly related, but I would be more worried about the life jackets than the comforter!
On one of ou cruises, it was VERY apparent that the person who had occupied our stateroom before us had preferred bathing in perfume rather than water. The lifejacket absolutely reeked of the stuff, to the point of giving me a headache while wearing it for the safety drill. If germs can cling as long as perfume, watch out! I guess I would have been sunk, both figurately and literally, if the ship had sunk because I don't think I could have tolerated that smell while bobbing in the ocean awaiting rescue (and my fellow passengers would have probably tossed me out of the lifeboat). :jester:

Maybe it was my mother in law:teeth: (actually she has yet to step foot on a ship) but she wears so much perfume I can smell it on my couch for hours after she has left our home. I'd save you Barb- I have gotten pretty good at 'blocking' out the perfume smell (besides I think the salt water might neutralize the smell-Hey maybe I will give MIL some bath salts for her birthday :) )

Some of you have mentioned about having the comforters and spreads washed, what about the pillows!! I know I have gotten into the habit of taking my own pillow with us when we stay in a hotel. I also pull all the bedding down to make sure they are clean. One place we stayed in in Newport RI had to have everything on the bed replaced because it was not clean. How gross!!!! Needless to say we won't go there again. But as someone stated, you can't let germs rule your life. You can take some precautions, but you can't climb under a rock. Otherwise you miss so much of life, which is way too short!!!!!!!!!!!

Should we be taking our own pillow and sleeping bag? I'm not and I'm going soon. I'll let you know how we fare. (Believe me, if we get ill, I will bring our own pillow and sleeping bag next time)

Don't worry too much...we made it through a week on the Magic and are still healthy one week later. Actually, that is a surprise because I almost always come down with a cold when we travel. I was sure it would happen, since our section of the airplane on the flight home sounded more like a tuberculosis ward! Oh well, everyone at work has been sick all winter, so maybe I am building up immunity by constant exposure to them.
