We just ordered our new magicbands for our upcoming trip and our little one is being given one too. I was a little surprised since in the past he didn't need one since he didn't have a ticket.
When did they start giving infants/toddlers magicbands, and why are they requiring them?

Ah ok, we normally stay offsite and this is the first time he needed a magicband. Make sense, thank you

Kids under 3 don't have to wear them - there is nothing linked to them. I think they probably did it to maintain peace in families, so parents didnt have to try to rationalize with 2.5 year old Timmy why he doesn't get a cool bracelet like his older siblings.

^Yep^ As far as entering parks and charging back to your room it will be useless.

HOWEVER.
If, God forbid, you and your 2yo become separated, your little ones MB can be scanned by a CM to get info about his/her name, travel party, and adults contact info which will assist in reuniting you.

This is a last case scenario and should not be relied on. Due to safety agreements they are not suppose to access the information on file from a child's magicband. Again do not rely on that being an option especially because only a select few CMs can seem much more then what resort you are staying at.

They give little ones magicbands because they are room keys. Even before magicbands under 3s on a resort reservation were issued Keys to the World cards.

Of course it shouldn't be relied upon. But it can be done in an emergency. I was pointing out to OP that a -3yo MB can be useful in an emergency.

I just see it used a lot on the boards as a plus and a way that Disney can reunite parents and children but know that in practice it is very much one of the last steps done so try to give that warning \. Procedure is still that kids under 10 go to baby care center and the baby care center does not have a magicband scanner that lets them access hotel records and thus phone numbers so a child usually has to be there for quite a long time before they take them to Guest Relations to be scanned and then the adult on their reservation's file be brought up and the phone number found. That's all I was saying it isn't like a child's magicband automatically links to their parent even if they are linked as friends and family.

on our last trip even the 4 month old got a band, 2 year old also got one. neither had to wear but the 2 year old loved his. he had one just like his big brothers and did just like the big guys. his did not turn mickey head color but it made him happy.

Yep, it will open the hotel room door, but it won't work for anything else. My 2 year old wore her band last trip mostly because her older sister did.

We used for our 1 and just under 3 year olds last time we went to write phone numbers inside of in case of them getting lost or something like that. I also believe, not confirmed, that it would help Disney identify them if they were indeed lost since it would be linked to your account. Plus it's fun!

When my kiddo was 2.5 we took the band...but his stuffed Mickey ended up wearing it the whole time. :)

The title of your thread is about a 2 year old - I don't think he's considered an infant at this point?

Disney considers them infants in terms of pricing and room occupancy.

No, they just don't charge for a child under 3. They don't consider a 2 year old an infant. When I went to put in my child's age when I booked my trip, the options were "Infant," "2," "3"..."17." I was a little surprised they consider my 1 year old an infant, but a 2 year old is identified as such and not as an infant. In fact, I think that's the only place I've seen the word "Infant." Most of the time, it's simply "child under 3."

our 2 year old grandson was listed as an infant many times during our last visit
