MIL: came along with a girlfriend and did her own thing during the day.

Hi everyone! We had an absolute fabulous time. So much that we booked a 7 night Eastern cruise for next September 29 to October 6, 2007. It is funny because the entire cruise notion came to me after my DH wasn’t too keen on going to Disney World two years in a row. I though the cruise was an acceptable substitute but it turns out that I love the cruise more than Disney World, if you can believe it!

Before I go into the day by day report I will give you some details of the ship mainly for those of you who have not cruised yet. I know this type of detail was so useful to me while planning my trip so I hope others find it useful as well. The ship is magnificicently decorated. It starts the moment you walk on the ship and see this awesome chandelier in the lobby.

IMG_5008.jpg

Every detail on the ship is amazing but more than just being pretty is so incredibly functional. You board the ship on deck three into a spectacular lobby which is where many of the character pictures take place. These are scheduled throughout the entire cruise and the lines are so short compared to the parks. I think this may have been my DD's favorite part of the entire cruise and maybe even mine too! Let’s just say I walked off that ship with 22 6x8’s which is the picture size of the character picture taken by the onboard photographers!

Here is a sample:

Also on Deck 3, are Lumiere’s and Parrot Cay, two of the restaurants on the regular rotation. There are also three clubs, I think, although we did not spend a lot of time there. We did go to Rockin’ Bar D the last night because they had the featured band playing a family dance party. It is so nice to be able to sit in what is essentially a bar knowing that there are only small children on the dance floor. I felt completely at ease and I even ordered a pina colada while I watched DD dance. To me, this is the essence of Disney. They are such experts at creating environments where adults and kinds both have an incredible experience and both demographics feel like they are being completely catered to.

Deck four is home to my favorite place, Shutters, the onboard photo store. Here they display all the photos taken on the ship and Castaway Cay. I am embarrassed to admit how much money I spent here but their pictures are amazing.

Also on Deck four is Animator’s Palate which is the fourth restaurant on the dining rotation, two souvenir stores (one geared towards adults and the other towards kids) and the Walt Disney theater which is where Broadway style shows were shown. The movie theater may also be on deck 4 (ETA Movie theater is on Deck 5! Thanks Kim!) but we never actually made it here so I am not completely sure. I really wanted to watch a movie but the times always conflicted with something else I wanted to do more! Also on Deck 4, is the promenade which is essentially a walking trail around the entire ship. I had intended to do more strolling here but we spent most of our time here playing Shuffleboard which DD wanted to play constantly after my MIL taught her to play!

Deck 5 is home to the kids clubs. I didn’t actually leave DD there because my MIL was aboard but we did visit one day and it was very nice. I never even told DD it was a possibility she could stay because she would have pushed me out the door!

We stayed on Deck 6 and there are mostly just staterooms here. Our room was very nice. The split bathroom is great! You essentially have two bathrooms with separate doors. They both have sinks and one has a toilet and the other a shower. At the last minute I caved and bought an over the door show organizer and I am so glad I did. There just isn’t room for a lot of counter space so all those little pockets are a great way to empty the toiletry bag. Deck 6 also has one of three laundry rooms on board. I did laundry Wednesday evening since the trip was 12 days and I had already over packed and still didn’t have quite enough to make the entire trip since we changed at least twice a day. Decks 1, 2, 7 and 8 were mostly staterooms as well.

Deck 9 is the fun deck! :cheer2: In the aft of the ship is Topsiders which is the casual dining hotspot. They have buffet breakfasts and lunches and less formal sit down dinners. They have indoor and outdoor seating which over looked the ocean. Going forward, you next come to the Mickey pool for kids. It is a shallow pool mostly for kids with a huge slide. Eva only went down the slide twice. I thought she would be on it the entire trip but she really wasn’t all that into it for some odd reason. Next to the Mickey pool is Goofy’s Galley, which has a lot of fresh has food in a case. Here you could find fresh fruit, wraps, paninis, and that sort of food. Right next to the pool is Pluto’s dog house where you could get hot dogs, chicken fingers and burgers. I ran down here one night to get DD chicken fingers the night we went to Palo.

If you continue walking forward, the next section is the family area with the Goofy pool and two hot tubs. The counter service food in this area was Pinocchio’s Pizzeria and a poolside bar. The pool can be covered during deck parties like the sail away party and pirate night. There is a stage in front of the pool for the deck parties and above the stage is a huge movie screen! This was so incredibly cool! During the parties, the stage appeared on the screen but every afternoon at 2:00 (and late at night as well) they played movies here. We watched Cinderella one day and DD and MIL watched Nemo another.

Walking forward again, you come to the adult pool area which is home to a pool, two hottubs and an adult only coffee bar. I visited this area only one, early one morning while DH and DD slept. I read in the hot tub and I was the only person there. It was so nice!

At the forward of the ship, is the Vista Salon and Spa. They have all sorts of treatments here and I really enjoyed my manicure, pedicure and Spa Taster, which was a facial and massage. I will say they do try to sell you products fairly relentlessly. I did succumb to one $49 exfoliator but other than that I held strong. I did have picture to buy after all! Next time I will probably just but a weeklong pass to the Rainforest room which is an aroma therapy sauna with time chairs and a fountain that is very nice according to my MIL and her girlfriend.

Deck 10 is home to Palo, the adults only restaurant which was divine! We ate dinner there one evening and the food was incredible. There are also some nice viewing areas on deck 10 along with a netted area for basketball.
The aft view from Deck 10:
IMG_5061.jpg

I think the teen area in one of the stacks on deck 11 but I obviously didn’t spend much time there.

That is a basic overview of the ship. Of course I will go into more detail as I do the day by day report, I just wanted to give you a general rundown first.

Yay for the general rundown, and great pics! :thumbsup2

Can't wait for the full blow by blow! :hyper:

This is great, we are planning our first cruise for 2008, so this has been enjoyable to read and very helpful

We were on your cruise also and had a wonderful time. What a great guide to the ship you gave! I could see it in my mind as I was reading. Just to add the Buena Vista Theatre was on Deck 5 behind Flounders Reef Nursery. The Buena Vista shows movies and also it is where you get tender tickets. So essentially Deck 5 is the theatre and kids areas.

Day 1
Friday, September 22, 2006

Thursday was my last day at work and I was so relived to be on vacation. My DD had ballet class at 5:30 so I took her to Baskin Robbins after school. We had just sat down when I heard someone say, “ I hope that’s not your black car.” I swung my head and sure enough a woman in a Nissan Armada (aka tank) had dented in the front passenger side of my car as she was attempting to pull out of her parking spot. Ugh! There went that vacation feeling. So I spent the first part of Friday morning on the phone with my insurance agent trying to get a claim going. Lovely.

We made it to the airport in plenty of time for our 1:20 pm flight and had a smooth direct flight to Orlando and we landed around 4:30 pm. We headed up to our room at the Hyatt in the airport. It was nice but for the money ($200) I would had rather stayed at Disney World. DD immediately started looking for the Disney cartoons on the TV, which was one of her favorite parts of the Wilderness Lodge last year! We ate Chili’s take out in our hotel room and swam in the rooftop pool overlooking the runway. The pool was beautiful but super chilly for a “heated” pool. After a swim, we turned in for the night

Day 2
Saturday, September 23, 2006

The main reason I chose the Hyatt was because of the convenience of taking the shuttle to the port Saturday morning. I was checked in by 8:30 and we were on a shuttle headed to the post by 9:45 a.m. Had we been at a resort, it would have been well after noon before we were on the bus. The bus ride was extremely pleasant and the video they show on the bus is positively enchanting. It shows all the characters heading to the cruise and enjoying the amenities of the cruise. It really got all of us in the mood and made the bus ride pass very quickly. Before we knew it, we caught a glimpse of the Magic in the port.

DCL10.jpg

We were off the bus by 10:40 a.m. and were given a #3 boarding pass. I checked in while DH and DD watched Disney cartoons on the many televisions. Once I had checked in, we made our way to the youth activities desk to check DD into the kid’s club and get the pager I never used.

After all the business was taken care of, I was on character watch. Sure enough Pluto and Donald were out soon enough and we got great pictures with both of them.

Shortly after all the pictures were taken, the boarding process began and we boarded almost immediately. I was incredibly excited as we posed for our picture and had our name announced as well boarded the ship.

DCL137.jpg

We headed straight to Guest Services and got complimentary tickets for the Thursday afternoon tea with Wendy Darling for all three of us and for the Galley Tour for Dusty and I the same day. We then headed up to Topsiders and ate lunch outside.
DCL4.jpg

After lunch DH and DD hung out at the Mickey pool while I went for my 1:45 p.m. pedicure appointment. While I was at the spa, DD went down the Mickey slide twice. Unfortunately she wouldn’t go again so I never got to see her go down. Maybe next time. One note about the Mickey slide: the Passporter states the age requirement is 4 years old. They also say the age requirement for Goofy’s Barnstormer at WDW is 3, and I knew that was not the case when we visited in December and it was only a height requirement. Sure enough, DH said there was only a height requirement of 38” required for the slide and no age requirement.

The pedicure was very relaxing as I was the only person in the salon that early in the trip. I recommend an early pedicure appointment. Not only were my toes pretty for the entire cruise but the place was empty as well. Per the suggestion of the DisBoards, I wrote “No sales pitch” on my form. It worked for only the pedicure and everyone else gave me the full pitch.

After the pedicure, I went to our stateroom, expecting to find DD napping and when the room was silent I thought DH had been triumphant in getting her down. Instead the room was empty! Sure enough they were in my MIL’s cabin and DD was wired. I left them to go to the DisBoards meet and enjoyed a pina colada while waiting for everyone to arrive. I meet several great people and then headed up to the room to gather DH and DD for the mandatory safety drill and our first meltdown of the cruise. First, DD’s shoes were left in my MIL’s stateroom and they had already left for the drill. Second, DD refused to wear the life jacket. Our wonderful stateroom hostess, Sharon, let me into my MIL’s stateroom to get DD’s shoes. This was a huge relief because the suitcase with DDs shoes had not yet arrived.

We headed to our station, Animator’s Palate. On the way up, I reasoned everyway I could to try and get her to don the life jacket. As we sat down I told our table mate that she was about to witness a meltdown once I had to force the life jacket on DD. Finally, all on her own she put the life jacket on herself and I was incredibly relieved to have a war of the wills averted.
DCL5.jpg

The Sail Away party followed the life jacket drill and it was perfect in every way. DD began dancing immediately and Therese, a member of the activities team, took DD by the hand and began to dance with her. I had to push back tears at that moment. Our long awaited cruise was finally happening and at that moment I had not a single care in the world.
DCL6.jpg

DCL7.jpg

We had the latest seating for early seating so we ate dinner at 6:00 p.m. in Lumiere’s. This was perfect for us. I really liked having the extra time to get ready for dinner as I was braced for the 5:30 p.m. rotation. Our tablemates were great and also had a three year old with the same birthday as DD! Both girls did great and were really well behaved during nightly multi-course meals lasting as long as 2 hours. Since our cruise was not full, there was no late seating behind us which was nice.

After dinner, we had pictures taken in the lobby with Minnie Mouse and decided to head up to our stateroom.

DCL139.jpg

On the way we ran into another awesome member of the activity team, Michael. He was juggling and had DD hold out her arms and he had her catch a pin she was juggling. It was a magical moment.
DCL8.jpg

We spent the rest of the evening on the verandah enjoying our voyage out to sea. It was a wonderful first day.

Great pictures! I remember seeing ya'll in your matching outfits, you looked fantastic! My DD did not like the slide either.

Thanks for the report, can't wait for some more................what stateroom were you in? We are in 6552 / 6554 on the Jan 27 Western.........can't wait to hear about ports of call. We also are staying at the Hyatt the night before so thanks for the photo of the pool!

Great report thanks for all the detail :surfweb: Can't wait to hear more! :Pinkbounc

Yes there is!! You should come on over and introduce yourself so we can all welcome you and start getting to know each other!! There are quite a few of us going with kids that will be between 3 - 5! :cool1:

Day 3:

The next morning we were still at sea scheduled to dock in Key West around noon. I awoke around 6:30 to a sleeping family so I grabbed my book and made my way to the hot tub by the adult pool. It was pure bliss as I was the only non staff member out and the weather was perfect: a bit of a chill but just enough to be described as crisp.

After about an hour I made my way back to the room, got ready and DH and DD were still sleeping. I ordered the free room service and tipped in cash for breakfast after everyone woke up and we enjoyed our meal on the verandah.
DCL9a.jpg

While on the verandah, we noticed several smaller boats accompanying us into Key West and we were surprised to actually see someone just from the small boat onto the ship. You can kind of see the transfer in this picture:

DCL10a.jpg

Here is Key West from our verandah:

DCL11.jpg

Pocahontas was making an appearance in the atrium around 11 a.m. and it was so nice to be able to put DD in her costume and walk downstairs and get a picture then run back up to the room and change again. I honestly think that was one of the most convenient things about the cruise ship. I really underestimated how nice it would be to have everything so nearby. I really enjoyed that aspect of cruising.

After DD’s photo op we ate a quick lunch at Topsiders and made our way off the ship and into Key West. We had previously booked the Western Union Schooner excursion but it was canceled about three weeks before our cruise and that left us without an excursion. We took the Conch Train tour and it was a lot of fun.

DCL147.jpg

I was nervous and the hour and a half length but it was no problem at all for DD. We have a break about an hour into the tour and bought a piece of key lime pie on a stick and dipped in chocolate. It was very delicious!

The tour was nice and I would recommend it as a leisurely way to see the island especially with a preschooler because you don’t have to worry about them running away, dawdling, or staying in a stroller if you happen to have one, which we did not. The sites were nice and we saw everything from the southern most point to historical sites.

DCL13.jpg

DCL12.jpg

I will say I was surprised to see chickens everywhere just roaming the streets. Anyone know what is up with that?

It was a warm day and by the time the 90 minute tour ended we were all ready to head back to the ship. I had visions of also visiting the aquarium but I was over it by the time we got off the train.

Once back on the ship, we cleaned up and I decided to take DD to visit the kids club thinking that I might leave her but in the end I never actually mentioned that I could leave because I wanted to take advantage of more character greetings before dinner. In the Oceaneer club the Fairy Godmother had just arrived to take pictures with the kids and then they made picture frames. It was well organized and DD enjoyed it.

DCL15.jpg

She especially loved dancing in front of the stage. (Are you getting the recurring theme here yet?) After the craft, they opened the big slide which apparently is not always open and Eva had a big time going down it. From the reactions of all the kids, the slide is a huge hit. All the climbing on toys proved to be popular as well.

DCL16.jpg

Before dinner we were able to take pictures with Belle, Peter Pan and Daisy Duck all within the span of about 15 minutes.
DCL143.jpg

Tonight was our first dinner at Animator’s Palate. I believe I have the veal chop which was nice. The “show” was nice although it was a lot more subtle than I expected it to be. I guess I expected a little more glitz but it was nice and the girls seemed to enjoy it, especially the Mickey appearance at the end of dinner.

DCL17.jpg

DCL18.jpg

After dinner we met Cinderella and then I think we may have headed up to the room and sat on the verandah until we turned in for the evening. It was a great first full day.

Great TR. Love the pictures. It is like reliving our cruise all over again. Keep it coming!

msaseifert - we were in room 6555 on the Magic (just across the hall from you ) and loved, loved, loved the location. We were mid-ships just off the stairs/elevators (but we did not hear any noise) and it was just a few floors up or down for anything you wanted to do. Not sure if you are traveling with kids but the Oceaneers Lab is just below (again we had no noise) and really convenient to pick up or drop off your children.

Thanks for the response.....we loved midship last year but in a cat 5, we did not have the experience of adjoining rooms - we are bringing our MIL and FIL with us - hopefully no one snores too loud :rotfl: As far as the kids....my daughter is 7 and can't wait to get to the clubs so she is all over that one. Alex is 11 and not so enthused about th eclubs but likes when there is free play in the arcade :teeth:

Loving your report! Thanks for taking the time to post! Enjoy those long September cruises before your daughter starts grade school.....I saw the deals on some of those cruises and really wished we could have pulled it off!! :thumbsup2

Valerie, I think your photos and report are about the best I've seen so far. :thumbsup2

Thanks for this very detailed trip. I cannot wait for the rest of the islands. We are going on the Nov. 18 Western and trying to figure out what to do on the islands with our 2 year old. Last year a pesky hurricane kept us from getting to the Grand Cayman.

Thanks for putting this together

Excellent report ~ Thanx for posting.

Your DD is so cute :goodvibes
