Magical Express question

I will be traveling to the World at the end of June. I’m trying to book the flights and am leaning towards a carry-on-only fare. I will use DME (for probably the last time 😭). My question is, if the flight attendants take my carry on upon boarding due to lack of space, will DME pick it up if it has the bar-coded tags? Or do I have to collect the suitcase myself and then board the bus?

Thank you in advance for all your expertise!

You will have to take your suitcase regardless. Whether it’s gate checked or checked to baggage claim. Luggage service is still discontinued.

Thank you! I didn’t realize it had been suspended, but that makes sense.

I often fly on small regional jets. In my experience, they have a good idea of when the bins will be full and are proactive about it. They'll also know how much space is left as people board, and sometimes people at the back of the line gate check the bag before boarding, even if they weren't asking for gate checked bags prior to boarding.

When they take your bag at the gate, there are two options for what happens to it. You'll need to know which option they are using - they'll tell you.

1 - Sometimes it is checked through to your destination. They will add that white barcode tag to it at the gate and tell you to pick it up at baggage claim at your destination.
2 - Sometimes they have "a la carte" service, where you deposit your bag at the end of the jetway and then claim it on the jetway at your arrival. They will give you a tag for these bags - it's usually neon pink or green. If your plane is too small to use a jetway, they'll have a rolling cart set up next to the plane stairs and you put your bag on it and pick it up when you disembark the plane.

Regardless, as others have noted, DME is not doing the luggage service at this time.

Thank you for all the added detail. It seems that even if DME goes back to handling luggage before the end of June, I would still be responsible in some way for retrieving my own bags.

Interesting, how airlines handle the overage of carry ons. I had never given it much thought.

We were toward the back of the line for boarding when they asked if anyone would mind getting their carry-on checked in. DH offered and they took his bag right there at the gate, tagged it and gave him a ticket.

His bag was waiting right outside the plane door as we got off, along with the strollers and wheelchairs, etc.

Does anyone know how early Magical Express starts picking up at resorts to take to the airport? We have such an early flight this trip. We have never had to be picked up before 8am in the past. Our flight is at 7am, I'm worried we will need to get alternative transportation.

Magical Express still runs 24/7. You'll be told what time to meet the bus, usually 3 hours prior to take-off -- so ~4am for your 7am flight.

Oh wow!! So great to know they still run 24/7! I was afraid they wouldn't be able to pick up at 4am

Yes, they do pick up early because guests regularly need that for early morning flights out. Forget about baggage service, though. There is no chance that they're going to add that back on for a couple of months before ditching DME services completely.
