Yesterday when we received our vacation materials from Getaway Today, I was given some discounted coupons for various places and the 1 that caught my attention was 1 for Magic Mountain. Is this a park worth going to? How far from DL is it? We only bought tickets for Knottsberry Farms as well as our hopper tickets for DL and was just curious if anyone thinks Magic Mountain is worth a try? Thanks, Chip.

They have some good roller coasters if you are into the scene.

Magic Mountain is about 90 minutes from DLR, give or take, depending on the time you travel. It's a great place if you really, really like coasters as that's about all that is there. There are some flat rides that are operated only sporadically.

It can get very hot there (easily 15-20 degrees hotter). Crowds are very different than at Disneyland or Knott's and you'll need to be open-minded and forgiving. Few truly edible food options (best left to places outside the park0.

Plan to go early in your trip - before you get the inclination to form opinons based upon your Disneyland experience. Don't go looking for magic here.

Magic Mountain is good if you like roller coasters - some of the best and most extreme ones are located there. I grew up not far from it and although it has been a few years I have many fond memories of it. There are a lot of different types of rides but the coasters are what draw the crowds.

The negatives that I have heard are regarding the crowds getting a little rough esp at night. They have had to work hard to keep the gang element out but every once in a while they still have some incidents when crowds get big and tempers get short. Also they have some hours that are variable depending on the season (sometimes they are only open on weekends) so check to make sure that your plans fit into it.

If you are a roller coaster enthusiast I think you will love it.

I used to love Magic Mountain when I lived in So Cal.

The rides are great, but very spread out so bring your walking shoes. It's also a little hilly so be prepared!

Great coasters and definitely worth a visit if you are into it. It is rough around the edges, but I have never had a problem at all.

step away from the mountain--not worth it, even for the coasters--rough crowd, long drive

I think it depends on how old you/your kids are. I personally really like Magic Mountain, but I'm young (25). It's certainly not someplace I need to bring my kids (2&4) to for an all day trip though. -- We actually live in Santa Clarita, so we go to Hurrican Harbor during the summer and the kids have fun. This year I may take my 4YO to play on the kiddy rides if I can get some really good tickets. -- If we didn't live in the area though I wouldn't bother taking a young kid.

Now, if you've got 12+ YO's or are a dare devil yourself, Magic Mountain is tons of fun. Sure it's a different TYPE of fun than Disneyland, but still fun non the less. -- I worked at Magic Mountain in high school. They attempted to turn into a themed wonderland LOL, it didn't happen! They are scuzzier now than their were before their theme attempted. But...if you like thrill rides Magic Mountain can't be beat!

The crowds can be rough. When I worked there, there was a gang fight that resulted in a bullet hole at the booth I worked at. That was pleasant. They do have metal detectors and they attemped to search people, but they also get sued for discrimination for it (hello! If your pants are down around your knees and you're wearing a bandana on your head the MAY be more inclined to search YOU than myself, a middle class housewife!).

The drive isn't too bad IMO. As long as you aren't driving during peak ours it should only take you an hour from Anaheim.

After being there today, I'd say not to waste your money. When you buy early enough in the season, you can buy an season pass there for $53 but, I seriously doubt I'm going to renew next year.

My best friend and I made the 75 minute drive up there from Orange County. The park is looking even more run down than ever. Only one of the flat rides was open when we were there. Of the 16 coasters, 4 or 5 of them were closed. Very frustrating to have most things closed. The new coaster, Scream, was plunked down in the parking lot. Literally. Then, due to the location, they had to close down one of the tracks for Colossus (which is an wooden coaster with the two tracks next to each other) Why'd they have to do that? Well, because they had to rip out the exit for the second side of Colossus.
After 3 hours, we called it a day already and headed back down to stop by Knott's and DLR.

I agree with other posters regarding MM not being worth the drive. I definitely would not recommend it for younger kids. It is a park for teenagers and adult roller coaster lovers. The park seems very run down to me but my husband and I still love the coasters. Also we did notice when we were there that people were asked to cover up tatoos and that the crowd was very different from that of DL.

Hope this helps

Oh no i should of checked with you all first! We just bought season passes for 54$ cause we are comming down in a few weeks and thought we go there for 2 days because of the 16 coasters! Thank God we have 5 days at DL and DCA looks like well need it to make up for MM. If we go there say on a Tuesday would it be as bad? We also have free tickets for H Harbor so maybe well take advantage of that. DD are 23 and 13 love Disney but wanted some thrill rides sound s a little scary to me.

probably a weekday would be better than weekends--i would suggest you go daytime hours only--i know we all sound parnoid and you probably will have no troubles just don't expect anything other than the coasters to be thrilling!

<font color=navy>We always have a great time when we go to Magic Mountain. My kids and I all love the fast rides, so we enjoy the thrills there. There is also a water park right there, and if you're going to be there two days, you'll probably have the opportunity to go there, too.

When I had my house fumigated a few years ago, we stayed out in Valencia and played at Magic Mountain & Hurricane Harbor - had a great time.

I don't compare it to the Disney parks. Be sure to try the roasted corn in the Gotham City area - they are so yummy, and you can put all kinds of spices on them for a different flavor.

There are also three rides that are an additional charge - for an even greater thrill. I haven't done them myself, but my kids are dying to do them - you might keep that in mind - more $ if you want to go on these, or if you want to 'rock climb'.

Your DD's are the perfect age!!! I think they will have a blast!!! -- Before you plan a weekday trip, I would call and ask what rides may be closed on those days. We haven't had seasons passes in a year or two, but it used to be that they would only open 3/4 of the rides on weekdays and then open all the rides on Fri-Sun.

Personally, I wouldn't be afraid to be there in the evenings. Maybe I'm just to 'Urban' with my Valencia upbringing and all LOL, but I wouldn't be afraid in the least. Rollor coasters are more fun when it's dark out anyways :D -- Oh, and the heat KILLS during mid day so evenings are better IMO.

I think the food at Magic is gross. I'd leave the park and get some 'real' food. You can go back to 'Hamburger Hill' (Lyons Ave exit.) for all the major fast food chains plus Claim Jumper, Macaroni Grill, Chilis, Chews, ect or go East on Magic Mountain parkway to get to the Valencia Town Center (mall) and you'll find Olive Garden, Black Angus, BJ's, Boco DePeppos, Mimis, TGI Friday, and more and more and more.

No reason to let everyone get on their soapbox, and tell you that it's a gang hide out! Six flags own’s the park. Haven't been there in a while (thinking going soon) but like most have said, it's for thrill seeking kids that need to come off saying "wow,,that was crazy!!". The coasters there are heart bounding and thrilling...that is why it attracts young teenagers from the surrounding areas. The day you have tickets is perfect. DL will of course be more relaxing after MM.
I say, good corresponding purchase!

We went to MM last May and were very disappointed with the park, especially having done DL and DCA earlier in the week.

We are real coaster enthusiasts and its true MM does have some of the best in the world but whats the point if only a few of them are running?

Superman, X, Deja Vu and a couple of others were down all day, the only saving grace being Goliath and Riddlers Revenge (although the queues were quite long). As for Batman we can ride this in the UK at Alton Towers, where their Nemesis ride is almost a carbon copy.

Apart from the rides we just didn't find the place particularly welcoming, although obviously coming from Disney we were always going to expect less.

The employees were rude and as for the guests.......!!!!

I won't be rushing back in a hurry......

Regards

Julian.

Thamk you all so much for your advise. Since we have our tickets we will oviously be going. We will stick to day time after words of caution.send pixy dust our way that the best coasters are running. I must tell you all however when i said sounds scarry i ment the park not the coasters hate to admit it but DH an i also do love fast smooth coasters. Athough the take off of R&R the first time did leave me feeling my age. Now however i must keep up with kids as to not be labled "old mom" yet. :) Really though thank you all for your wonderful advice now just ine more question for all who have been there. Seeing how most of you all say lines are long should we upgrade our pass to include fast lines? Or should we see whats running when we get there and buy those fast line deals gee i think the guy said $15 / person good for 4 rides?
Sorry for all the questions but you all are sooo good!!! :)
