As much as I read before I left, I had never heard of this. My DD (5) and I just returned yesterday after 9 days. The most magical day by far was our "Magic Kingdom Day." We thought this would be a special day because we had PS for the Princess Breakfast. Little did we know of the magic that was to come...
I must have written the wrong time for our PS as 7:00 am. (I even remember asking the operator if that was too early-but that did not matter because I actually got the PS.) So, there we were at the gate at 6:45 am. A freindly gentleman told us that the monorail would be running in a few moments, so I suspected nothing amiss. Promptly, at 7 he escorted us to the monorail and told the two gentlemen to take care of us. We were the only people on the monorail. This just added to my DD excitement. We reached the turnstiles and there was one other couple there. (They also had been told they had a 7 am PS.) I then approached a CM who informed me that the park would not open until 8AM. He then dialed the Disney Dining folks who stated that the PS was for 8. (I was relieved and did not care how long we would have to wait.) At this point my daughter is so excited she can barely contain herself with the anticipation of meeting the princesses because of course, she rightly believes that she too, is a princess.
The gentleman who allowed me to call to confirm the PS then approached me and asked if DD would be interested in "Opening the Magic Kingdom". I quickly responded "of course"!!!!
He asked us to wait for a few moments. People are lining up outside the gate as we are both bursting with anticipation. He escorted us through the gate, gave my DD instuctions on waving a magic wand, and stated that he could not open the park until she gave the password (She chose Cinderella.). He hands her a magic wand, and then tells all the people behind the gate that the park will not open untill they all say the magic word, and DD waves the magic wand.
He took pictures of both of us together and then, we were driven to the castle for our Princess Breakfast. (I really wish we had gotten his name.) She was also given a computer generated paper with the date and proclaiming her the "Gaterkeeper of the Magic Kingdom", which states her name. At this point we are both literally glowing!! My daughter has her "I'm a Little Princess" shirt with pictures of the princesses. We were seated at a small table right in the center of the window, which the CM stated is the "best seat in the house".
She relishes in being called princess over and over. The characters were all pleasant and signed her book and posed for numerous pictures. Peter Pan mischeviously would run in and out of the dining room periodically, making noises as he would come and go. At this point, we finished eating and headed downstairs. The Fairy godmother was seated on the throne. We patinently waited in line. She spent at least 6-7 min, just with my DD. She stated what a beautiful princess she was. She looked in her autograph book and referred to her by name. When she saw we were from Philadelphia, she stated that she had been there for the Thanksgivng Day parade and maybe she would see us this year. She was wonderful!
That day, throughout the park, my daughter was refered to as a princess constatntly!! (No doubt, due to the shirt.) At one point, she looked up and asked me, "Mommy, how do they all know I am a princess?" Well, the tears welled up in my eyes(as they are now as I write this), and I knew that whatever I had to do to convince my husband to let us take that trip, was well worth it. This was the most magical, memorable, glorious day I ever had. She has called at least 5 poeple now since we came home yesterday recounting this over and over, so I know that it had the same impression on her.
I think that they pick the first child in the park/at the gate that day. I found out that they do this everyday. It is worth waking up early to try to have your child chosen. I had never, ever heard of this, but it is a memory that will live with me until I die.
One of the odd things is that the princesses in MGM the next day also referred to her as "princess" , as Jasmine did in Epcot. However after speaking to Pocahontas in MGM, who gave her a kiss, and called her princess, My DD said, "She must have talked to Cinderella and the Fairy Godmother yesterday and that's how she knows." It is trully magical when the children believe and feel every part of the magic! ( Even I was confussed because she did not have a princess shirt on.)
I did not intend on this being so long-(Imagine if I attempt an entire trip report!) However, I thought that other people might like to know about this for a chance to be chosen as well.
