I've been reading that Disney will bring some form of fireworks back to MK for the holidays! Exciting news, but does anyone have any guesses about them continuing into January? We will be at WDW Jan 4-8 and I'd LOVE to see some fireworks at MK again!

Unless they keep the holiday overlay (currently scheduled to run until 12/30), I wouldn't expect any fireworks in January at all. Your best shot at nighttime entertainment is the Electrical Water Pageant, which has some movement the last day or so.

Is 12/30 for sure the overlay end date. For years now its always been the end of the first week of January. If this is the case for this year I might have to change some plans.

My family and I will be there just ahead of you. We do not anticipate fireworks of any kind and the park hours will be back to what they were pre-holiday. Our expectations are geared towards the shorter hours, no fireworks so anything beyond this will be a bit of magic. As soon as they announce fireworks starting back up I will be booking another trip.

We are here now and the castle overlay is pretty neat with some flares every once in awhile. Just the overlay brings a big crowd of people so I don't think they will be doing any fireworks for now. I love the fireworks but it is also nice to be back in the room and sleeping early so we are well rested for rope drop.

I am unsure if we will go in June or July 2021.
Part of me thinks later the better for possible returns.
Any thoughts?

At this point I think a lot of just going to depend on vaccine distribution and I think disney and others are going to base decisions on that.

i'm watching an in park video someone took last night and these "flares" need to stop. the castel forecourt was PACKED with people standing there with their cameras out waiting for them to go off. it was WAY too dense and exactly the kind of packing Disney wanted to avoid by not doing shows and fireworks in the first place............

But remember, Disney is mainly only not doing fireworks and shows currently from an economic standpoint. The flares show that it’s not because of safety, they just don’t want to pay what it costs for a nightly fireworks show with reduced capacity in the park.

While it saves money, I think the biggest reason is the thousands of people packed in together for a long period of time before, during and after the shows.. Plus the thousands of people who all leave at the same time after the fireworks and pack the transportation.

But UO and Sea a World have already proven the concept that firework shows can be done safely. Disney isn’t trying because they don’t want to spend the money.

Perhaps, but at At Sea World, there are viewing areas all over the park, where at MK, people all clump together in front of the castle. At SeaWorld, people leaving walk to their cars while at MK people are crammed on busses, the monorail and boats. In any case, hopefully in a year the shows will all be back.

People at mk would be able to watch all over the park if they did no projection
I know it's hard to fathom sometimes but the no fireworks decision is all about the money, same as no shows including F!

Yeah, except most people want to be in front of the castle, as we know from crowding from the “before times.” You could easily find places elsewhere in the park because most people wanted to see the fireworks over the castle. The majority of people want that picture perfect view from the hub or down Main St., projections or not. Just like what’s shown on commercials and other promo materials. Seeing Wishes or HEA from other areas of the park never did it for us, at least. Main St. or the hub was a must. I travel 1500 miles to see the castle framed by fireworks and for the feeling I get when I see that. Seeing the fireworks from elsewhere in the park doesn’t do it for us at all 🤷🏻‍♀️ Fireworks over the castle is iconic.

Personally, I think it’s both things. They’re saving money while they’re limiting capacity AND they know they’ll have crowding issues on Main Street, whether they have distancing markers down or not. I don’t think it’s just one thing. I think it’s both things.

If it was 100% about restricting people standing around in the hub, they wouldn’t be doing projections and flares right now. Those are causing massive crowds in the Hub on a nightly basis. Disney doesn’t want to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars a week doing fireworks shows when they’re at reduced capacity and not selling out resorts.

From these reports, now I am worried those big fireworks shows may never be back if flares and projections are all that is needed to draw massive crowds.

I remember back in the early 2020s when I didn't pay much attention to those little flares they would shoot off all day from the castle. I was really missing out.

In the future, instead of having just one or two evening dessert parties, Disney could have one every 30 minutes or so for each flare they shoot off!
